Chapter 2

Author: Existence
Ever since we were kids, everyone liked Jerry more than me. He was handsome and had a sunny disposition, while I hid in the shadows due to the scar on my face.

From that day on, I never mentioned the fire again, nor did I try to clarify the truth. I became Simone's secret partner in bed. Since she couldn't get Jerry, she vented all of her lust and desire on me.

But every single time, she would press her palm or a pillow over my face. She was only willing to look at my eyes. She said they were very similar to Jerry's.

I became his substitute.

Yet after every time we were intimate, she would hold me in silence for a long time, as if she felt some attachment to me. The occasional scraps of warmth from her gave me the illusion that perhaps one day, she would truly be mine.

But that illusion ended that day, when I heard Simone call me a plaything. That finally snapped me out of my fantasy.

I had to laugh at how deluded I was.

The next day, just as I sat down at my desk, Jerry walked toward me. He stopped in front of me and placed a document on my desk.

"I'll be taking over the Mooncradle project from now on, Isaac. Here's the handover. Just sign your name to it."

I whipped my head up and stared at him. "What did you say?"

The Mooncradle project was my baby. For the past three years, I'd handled all kinds of matters for Simone at the company, including providing technical support and system maintenance. However, I had never given up on my true profession.

Programming was my one passion—the only light I had in my dark life. Once I immersed myself in code, I could temporarily forget the contempt and ridicule I received.

If the Mooncradle project turned out to be a success, it would be the core product that guaranteed the company's competitiveness in the industry for the next ten years.

And I was the principal architect for the project.

Simone had once said in front of everyone, "Isaac is the only one who can handle this project."

At that time, the approval in her eyes was my only consolation. But now, even that was being taken away from me.

Smiling faintly, Jerry said, "I know you have a hard time accepting this, but it's the company's decision. You've always been too quiet and reserved anyway. You don't have the right personality to lead such an important project."

After a pause, he reached out to adjust my collar. It looked like a friendly, thoughtful gesture, but his words were as sharp as ever.

"The project will do even better in my hands. Don't worry. I'll lead everyone to great success."

He turned to the surrounding colleagues and smiled confidently. "From now on, if anyone has any questions about the project, you can come directly to me."

His display nauseated me.

Jerry turned around once more to whisper into my ear, "Ever since we were kids, Isaac, you've always been too disgraceful to be seen in public. Why haven't you learned your lesson yet? You'll forever be trash that deserves to stay in the gutter."

My chest tightened painfully.

At that moment, there was a slight commotion at the entrance to the office. Simone had arrived.

I looked at her for help. "Simone…"

My eyes were pleading, filled with expectation. She seemed to pause when she met my gaze, with a flicker of mixed emotions flashing in her eyes. But she soon suppressed all of that, and her expression became impassive once more.

Frowning, she said, "I'm the one who decided to give the project to Jerry instead."

Her words cut like knives.

"Jerry's right. You need more training," she added.

"Don't you already know what I'm capable of?" I asked, my voice hoarse and tinged with the unwillingness to accept this outcome.

Simone knew better than anyone just how many technical difficulties I'd resolved and how many chunks of crucial source code I'd written for the company in the last three years.

But my question seemed to anger her. Her tone grew impatient. "Why must you keep trying to compare yourself to Jerry with everything, Isaac?

"Fine. I'll make it clear to you now, then—you're not as capable as he is, and you're not as likable either!"

She leaned close to my ear and warned, "Just because you're sleeping with me, it doesn't mean you can forget your place!"

Despite having already known this would happen, I still couldn't stop my heart from clenching painfully.

I lowered my gaze, refusing to look at her. Picking up the pen, I signed the handover document and walked out of the office.

The day after the celebratory party, I submitted my resignation to Apex Tech's main headquarters. Now that things were running smoothly at the Abellian branch, my job was done. I wanted to take a break.I wanted to see the world and indulge in some of the things I enjoyed doing. On the day I left the company for good, I saw Simone outside the building. She was leaning against a car, holding a bouquet of white roses, her expression worn. When she saw me coming out with a box in my arms, she hurried forward."Isaac! You're leaving?""Yes.""Where are you going?""I don't know yet. I'll probably just travel around."After a long silence, Simone handed me the flowers. "These are for you."I didn't take the bouquet. "You can keep the flowers, Ms. Murphy."Her hand froze in the air, and the light in her eyes slowly dimmed. "I… I just wanted to say goodbye.""Goodbye," I replied, giving a curt nod before walking past her to grab a cab."Isaac!" Simone called out from behind with a

Simone went overboard in her attempts to make it up to me. She tried to give me 30% of the shares in Murphy Group, but I returned the agreement without signing it.She bought the entire office building where my company's office was, saying she was giving it to me to use as my office, but I had Connor refuse it on my behalf as well.Simone even visited my parents, begging for their forgiveness in the hopes that they would put in a good word for her.My parents called me, their voices filled with heartache as they told me, "We heard about what you've been through all these years, Isaac. Simone hurt you, and we… failed to protect you. No matter what you decide to do, you have our support."I held the phone, my eyes tearing up a little. That was all I needed. My family's understanding and support mattered more than anything else.Under my leadership, the project with Murphy Group proceeded smoothly. "You saved her life, huh?" I repeated, my chuckle disrupting the heaviness of the atmosphere.I walked up to Jerry and looked down at him. "Did you really get that scar from a fire, Jerry?"His eyes flickered, but he stubbornly shouted, "Of course! How else could I have gotten it?""Is that so?" I drawled. "Why do I recall you falling off a tree when you tried to steal mangoes from the neighbor's garden when you were ten years old? A branch had cut you on the way down, didn't it?"Jerry's face turned ghostly pale. "S-Stop lying!""You know full well whether or not I'm lying," I retorted, my voice clear as I leaned in. "You didn't even go to the abandoned factory that day—because you were at home after Mom sent you to your room for secretly eating the cake in the fridge that you weren't supposed to touch."Simone whipped her head up to look at me, her eyes flickering with shock. "Isaac… Back then, the boy in the fire…"I met her gaze. "It was me."She staggered backward, just ba

After work, I went down to the basement parking lot to get into my car when Jerry rushed over and stood in my way. With his bloodshot eyes and disheveled clothing, he looked nothing like the proud and sophisticated man he used to be. Instead, he was more like a screaming lunatic."Isaac!" he bellowed. "Why did you come back? You decided to leave, so why did you bother coming back?"I calmly looked at him and said, "I'm just doing my job.""Your job, huh? I know you're doing this on purpose! You're just playing hard to get to seduce Simone again, aren't you?"His face was twisted with jealousy as he continued, "You're such a devious bastard! Ever since we were kids, you've always tried to steal my things! First, you wanted to steal Mom and Dad's love, and now, you've come back to steal my woman! Why won't you just die?"Jerry raised his fist and swung it at my face, but I easily caught it, my gaze frosty."It was always you who tried to compete with me, Jerry. You're the one who

After the meeting ended, Simone immediately ran after me."Isaac!" She stopped me in the corridor, her attitude the meekest I'd ever seen from her."Are you free this evening? I'd like to… treat you to dinner to welcome you back."Jerry also came after us, his smile stiff as he hooked his arm around Simone's."That's right, Isaac. Since you just got back, we should meet up for a family meal."But Simone subtly pulled her arm away, and that simple reaction made Jerry's face go pale.Honestly, they amused me."That won't be necessary, Ms. Murphy," I politely declined. "I already have plans tonight."I walked past her to leave, but she called out to me once more, her voice frantic."Isaac! Can't we… even be friends?"I stopped and turned back around. "I don't think we were ever friends, Ms. Murphy."This time, along with my team, I left the building without pausing.Once we were in the car, my assistant, Connor Lewis, couldn't resist prying for gossip."Mr. Griffin, Ms. Murph
