Chapter 1: The Breaking Point

Lily's POV

The sudden sound of shattering glass echoed through the empty concrete hallway of the high school ice arena.

I froze instantly in my tracks, my fingers slipping from the edge of the large plastic storage bin I was carrying. The bin tilted, dropping dozens of rolls of white and black hockey tape.

They scattered across the cold, damp floor, rolling away into the dark shadows, but I did not even look down at them. My entire body went completely stiff. Everyone at Silver Falls High School knew that specific, terrifying sound. It was the sound of Holden Vance losing his absolute mind. Again.

Holden was the star captain of our varsity ice hockey team, the untouchable campus god, and my next door neighbor since we were toddlers. He was also an absolute monster. For the past year, he had made it his personal, daily mission to make my life a living hell.

He knocked my books out of my hands in the crowded corridors. He laughed out loud when his popular athletic friends threw crumpled lunch trash at my locker. He was mean, arrogant, and completely volatile. I hated him with every single fiber of my being, and he treated my very existence like an insult to his high status.

I took a slow, shallow breath, stepping closer to the heavy locker room door. The air in the hallway suddenly felt different. It was heavy, thick, and suffocating. It smelled like freezing winter ice, old leather sports gear, and something metallic and sharp.

It smelled exactly like fresh blood. My instincts told me to run. Get out of here right now, Lily, my mind screamed at me in panic. But my feet felt like they were glued to the floor. Curiosity and fear kept me frozen.

I leaned forward, my heart hammering violently against my ribs, and peeked through the cracked wooden door. The varsity locker room was a complete disaster zone.

Heavy wooden benches were flipped upside down on the floor. Metal lockers were deeply dented, their doors ripped off the hinges. In the center of the ruined room stood Holden. His white varsity hockey jersey was torn to shreds at the collar, exposing his broad shoulders.

His knuckles were dripping dark, thick blood onto the floor tiles. He was breathing so hard that his chest heaved with every ragged gasp of air.

But it was his eyes that made my breath catch completely in my throat. They were not his normal dark brown color. They were burning a bright, supernatural gold. They looked exactly like the eyes of a wild, hungry animal from the woods.

Marcus Flint, the backup captain of the team, was lying on the floor a few feet away from him, clutching his ribs. Marcus was bleeding heavily from his split lip, but he was laughing a cruel, mocking laugh.

"You are finally going feral, Holden," Marcus taunted him, spitting blood onto the floor. "The university talent scouts are standing right outside the arena gates right now. You just blew your single chance at getting into university. You are finished. Your whole life is ruined."

Holden let out a sound that chilled me to the bone. It was not a human scream. It was a deep, guttural growl that literally shook the concrete floorboards beneath my sneakers.

The air pressure in the room dropped instantly, making my ears pop. He lunged forward at Marcus again, raising his bloody fist to deliver a blow that looked like it could kill a man.

"Stop it right now!" I yelled, slamming the heavy door completely open before my brain could stop my mouth.

Holden froze instantly. He whipped his head toward me with terrifying, unnatural speed. The very second his golden eyes locked onto my face, the entire atmosphere in the room changed.

The wild, murderous rage on his face turned into pure, unadulterated shock. He stopped moving completely. His chest expanded deeply as he sniffed the air, tracking my personal scent through the metallic smell of the locker room.

He took three slow, deliberate steps toward me, completely ignoring Marcus on the floor. The glowing golden color in his eyes flared even brighter, consuming his dark pupils.

"Get away from me," I whispered, my voice trembling as I backed up into the hallway. My spine hit the cold brick wall. I was trapped, and there was nowhere left to run.

Holden did not stop. He closed the massive distance between us in a fraction of a single second. He was too fast for a human. He pinned me tightly against the brick wall, placing his bloody hands heavily on either side of my head. His body heat felt like a literal furnace radiating against my skin. He leaned his head down, his face mere inches from mine, his jaw clenching.

"Your scent," he growled out, his voice sounding deep, rough, and entirely non human. "What are you? Why do you smell like that?"

I could not breathe. My heart was beating so hard I thought it would burst out of my chest.

I wanted to lift my hands and push him away, but a strange, sudden warmth washed over my entire upper body the moment his chest brushed against mine. It felt like a spark of pure electricity jumping directly from my skin straight into his.

Holden gasped loudly, his eyes widening. He pulled his head back slightly, looking down at his own bleeding knuckles. The deep cuts on his hands suddenly stopped bleeding. They were closing up, knitting together, and disappearing right before my eyes, leaving perfectly smooth skin behind.

"What is going on here?" a loud, booming voice roared from the end of the hall.

Coach Miller stood there with his arms crossed over his chest, his face bright red with anger. Two wealthy, well dressed university talent scouts stood right behind him, looking at Holden with complete disgust and disappointment.

Holden dropped his hands instantly and took a large step back from me. The gold color in his eyes faded back to dark brown in a flash, but his large hands were still trembling violently against his sides.

"She attacked me, Coach," Holden said smoothly, his voice instantly changing back to his arrogant high school tone. He pointed a finger directly at my face, looking completely innocent. "She threw a heavy glass water bottle at my head. I was just defending myself in the hallway."

My jaw dropped in absolute shock. That was a complete, disgusting lie. He was trying to frame me to save his university scholarship.

"Do not lie to me, Holden," Coach Miller yelled, walking up to us with heavy, angry footsteps. "The scouts and I saw everything through the glass observation window. You started the fight with Marcus inside the locker room. And now you are pinning a regular student against the wall. I have tolerated your temper for a year, but this is the end."

"It was an accident," Holden muttered, his jaw clenching so hard a vein popped in his neck.

"I do not care what it was," Coach Miller said, his voice cold. "You are suspended from the hockey team effective immediately. No practices. No games. And if you do not fix your toxic attitude, I will personally tell the university recruiters to pull your sports offer permanently. You will have no future."

Holden looked like he wanted to rip the coach's throat out. His knuckles twitched, and his breathing went ragged again.

But Coach Miller was not done yet.

"You need discipline, Vance. Lily's family runs the sports gear shop right across the street. I just talked to her father on the phone. You are going to work there every single day after school for the next month.

No pay. Community service. If Lily reports one single bad behavior from you, your hockey career is completely finished. Do you understand me?"

Holden turned his slow, deadly gaze back to me. A dark, terrifying smile touched his lips, making my stomach twist into painful knots.

"I will see you tomorrow morning, neighbor," Holden whispered in my ear, his hot breath brushing my skin.

He turned around and walked away down the corridor, leaving me shivering all alone in the cold, dark hallway.
