Madelyn Vance

~•~

The table was always set by seven as long as someone was at home. Even if my parents were rarely home, the staff set the table by the time it was seven so when I came downstairs by seven on Saturday and saw that the table wasn’t set, I knew something was wrong.

“You aren’t dressed yet?” My mother asked as she walked past me.

“What? Dressed for what?”

“Dinner with the Mavericks.” She said in a matter-of-fact tone. “I told you last week.”

“Oh.” She didn’t. If she did, I would have added it to my calendar. I wasn’t in the mood to go out for dinner, no less to Lucas’ house. All they did was talk about our grades, future plans, and their businesses.

“What are you waiting for, Maddie? We have to be there by seven-thirty.”

I expelled a sigh and rushed back upstairs, heading straight to my closet to find something that was both casual and dressy at the same time. I took the quickest shower known to man. It barely lasted five minutes and I hurriedly got dressed, pulled my hair into a ponytail, and went back downstairs fifteen minutes later.

My parents were already waiting by the door for me.

“We almost left without you.” My father said, but that was also a lie. I was the reason they were frequenting the Maverick household. They were making sure to be on good terms with their future in-laws.

I didn’t say anything to that and merely followed them to the car. My father got into the passenger’s seat and my mother and I took the backseat.

“To Porter’s Ranch.” My father told the driver.

If it was up to me, we’d walk since it was only a street away, but no one asked me so I stayed quiet in the backseat and texted Lucas to check if he knew we were having dinner together tonight. He did.

The Maverick house had a gate with a code. I always thought that was a bit much, but, again, nobody asked me. Lucas answered the door before we even knocked, which meant he’d been waiting for us. He was in a button-down with the sleeves rolled up and that smile he kept specifically for adults he wanted to impress. He shook my father’s hand, kissed my mother’s cheek, and then looked at me. “You look great, Mads.”

“Thanks,” I said as I walked inside. “So do you.”

Lucas grinned and led me inside the house to greet his parents, Richard and Diane. I’d been there a few times but the size of the house never failed to keep me in awe every single time.

It was more space than anyone needed, especially for a family of four. Lucas had a stepbrother, which I’d never seen, but he was Diane’s son. Apparently, he was antisocial and never joined them for anything.

The house had several wings, making me wonder if they saw each other except for the times they shared a meal.

When we sat down, the table had already been set for six. Both fathers took the ends of the table, their wives sitting adjacent to them. I sat next to my mother and Lucas happily took the seat next to me. My mother smiled pleasantly at that.

Before we could even start eating, our fathers launched into a business conversation, talking about their next investments and other things that I quickly tuned out.

I focused on the food, but it didn’t take long before I heard my name.

“Madelyn.” Richard looked at me. “Your father tells me you’re looking at medicine?”

My mouth parted.

“She is,” my mother interjected before I could say anything. “She has started working on her applications.”

“Wow,” Diane sighed dreamily. “If only my boys could be as diligent as her.”

“She is,” my mother continued, more than eager to brag. “She’s the cheer captain and vice president of the student council, but somehow still has time to pass all her classes.”

“Really?”

My mother continued to gush about me while I went back to eating. This was what happened during every meal with the Mavericks. Someone asked me a question and one of my parents jumped in to answer and continue the conversation without me.

I didn’t mind. It wasn’t like I was interested in the conversation. I just hated that even the person interrogating me didn’t care for my answer.

The conversation moved from me to Lucas. He talked about his past football games and how he thought this season was promising. I ate my food and contributed when someone looked at me and smiled when it was appropriate. I was very good at dinners like this. I’d had a lot of practice.

We were halfway through the main course when I heard the front door.

Footsteps echoed through the house and they were about to walk past when Diane called out. “Flynn? Is that you?”

My fork froze halfway to my mouth. Twice was a coincidence. Three times was bad luck. Surely, I wasn’t about to run into him a fourth time, right?

I forced my hand to move and dropped my fork back in my plate just as the footsteps started to approach the dining room.

“Do you want to join us for dinner?” Diane asked when the footsteps came to a halt.

I held my breath and looked up.

There was no way the universe wasn’t fucking with me. How did he manage to appear everywhere I was?

Flynn’s eyes moved across the table. They passed over my parents, over Diane, over Richard, and over Lucas. Until they found me.

His expression didn’t change as he looked back at Diane. “Already ate.”

Diane’s smile stayed warm. “Are you sure? There’s—“

“I’m sure.”

“Fucking asshole,” Lucas muttered under his breath beside me.

As if Flynn heard it, his eyes narrowed at Lucas briefly before he turned around. “I’ll be in my room.”

He didn’t wait for anyone to reply before he left. I somehow felt satisfied that I wasn’t the only one he dismissed so easily but another thought chased that one away.

He had a room in a Maverick house. He could go and come as he pleased. Diane was eager to have him at the table. Did that mean he was—

My father cleared his throat, cutting off my thoughts. “Is that your stepson?” He asked Richard.

“Yes. He doesn’t do very well with crowds.”

I almost choked on air. Flynn was Richard’s stepson? Flynn Cahallan, the boy I owed, the one who fixed my car twice, the same one who spoke about bending me over his knee was Lucas Maverick’s stepbrother?

Fuck.

Flynn Cahallan~•~My plan to avoid Madelyn had been thrown out the window.Obviously.I couldn’t fully comprehend why she was currently sitting on my couch, looking around the living room curiously, but she’d insisted on seeing my place and I’d just run with it.The new plan had been to entertain her and see what she was up to. I didn’t expect she’d be tagging along to my house.I watched her take in the room slowly like she was trying to memorize the layout or something. Her eyes landed on the photo on the side table and stopped there. “Is this your dad?”I didn’t answer right away. The photo had been there so long that I usually didn’t even register it anymore. It was a picture of me at maybe ten years old, grinning next to him in front of an old Mustang with its hood propped open, both of us covered in the same grease stains. My mother had taken that picture, back when she and my dad were still together. “Yeah.”“You look like him.”“People say that.”She glanced at me, clearly wa

Madelyn Vance ~•~I’d been in a bad mood all day long but talking to Flynn genuinely put me at ease, which was why as soon as Mr. Reyes announced that detention was over, I didn’t hesitate to pack my stuff in my backpack and follow behind him.The hallways were quiet as we stepped out as a lot of people had gone home already.“You never answered if I could go with you to see your place.”“I did,” Flynn responded without looking at me. “I told you it’s inappropriate.”I rolled my eyes. “Since when do you care about that?” On our third meeting, he basically implied that he was going to spank me. I still hadn’t forgotten about that no matter how hard I tried to shove it down in the deepest part of my mind.He opened his mouth to speak but I held a hand out. “Hold that thought. I need to get a few books from my locker.”Surprisingly, Flynn followed me to my locker without complaint, leaned against the nearby one while I took out the books I needed, and followed suit after I resumed walki

Flynn Cahallan~•~Madelyn and I shared a few classes and since the day I gave her a ride, she always checked for me. I was used to walking in class and seeing her already seated so it was weird for her to walk in almost ten minutes to the end of the class and not even check if I was present. She didn’t even smile at the teacher like she always did. It was like she wasn’t in the mood to perform. However, by the time detention came around, she was her regular bubbly self again.“Good evening, Mr. Reyes.” She said, chirping as she practically skipped inside the classroom. “Sorry I’m late. Had to give the girls some instructions before I came.”Mr. Reyes didn’t say anything. He just nodded towards the desk. She gave him her regular smile and turned before freezing. Her face dropped for a second. Then she blinked and the smile was right back on. I wasn’t surprised when she walked over and sat beside me. “I wasn’t expecting to see you here.”I raised an eyebrow. It wasn’t my first detentio

Madelyn Vance~•~“Morning,” I chirped as I walked past the dining table to get to the kitchen.“Oh, good. We caught you before work. Come sit.”I paused and stared at my mother warily. My father was sitting beside her, sipping his coffee and reading the newspaper. I didn’t see them a lot because they were always busy and whenever they freed themselves up to “talk”, it was never something good.“I spoke to the admissions counselor at Hopkins yesterday,” she said, sliding a brochure across the table. “The early decision deadline is soon. I want your personal statement finalized before then.”I looked at her, then my dad who was pretending he couldn’t hear our conversation. “I already have a draft.”“I read it.” She didn’t look up from the folder she was organizing. “It needs work.”“What kind of work?”“More about pre-med specifically. Right now it reads like you could be applying anywhere.” She finally looked at me. “You need to sound like someone serious about medicine.”“I am seriou

Flynn Cahallan~•~The second I pressed send, I wanted to take it back, but it was too late and she’d already seen it. I shouldn’t have texted her. I should have just thrown away the note she left for me as planned, but I’d never been able to throw out any of her notes.I stared at the note straightened on my knee, her number written at the top with a message for me at the bottom. Her handwriting was one of the few things that had changed about her. Back then, it was almost intelligible, but it seemed like she had practiced handwriting in the past three years. Her writing was a lot more cursive and a bit more mature. My phone buzzed on the table.[Madelyn: What do you mean?]My thumbs hovered above my keyboard. This was the time for me to drop my phone and go to bed, but my fingers were already typing before I could talk myself out of it.[Me: What do you want from me?] I repeated.[Madelyn: haha, I’m not sure what that means][Madelyn (2): but I’m hoping we can be friends]“Friends.”

Madelyn Vance~•~“Why did you ask me for Flynn’s number?”“So you saw it,” I hissed at Hazel, shoving her playfully. “Why didn’t you give it then?”She smiled sheepishly. “I was busy, sorry.”“Flynn?” Anna interjected. “Flynn Cahallan? Why do we need his number?”I groaned, trying to think of a plausible excuse. I was vice president of the school committee. Wouldn’t it make sense for me to have everyone’s number? “He fixes cars, doesn’t he? I want him to take a look at mine.”“You can just go to the shop and have one of them look at it?” Hazel blinked, her sentence sounding more like a question than a statement.“We attend the same school. It’s easier this way.” I shrugged, trying to come off as nonchalant. “It’ll be better if he drives it to the shop himself. I’m quite busy these days with my college application and everything.”Hazel and Anna shared a look that I tried not to read much into before Hazel sighed. “Fine. I’m sending it to you.” She brought out her phone from her backp

That was the beginning and the end of it and the fact that I was still thinking about ‘be careful, golden girl’ thr
