Chapter 3

"JASMINE! Get your lazy, defective ass out here right now!"

I scrambled to hide my phone under the thin blanket. I had gotten a notification, the Ivory Spire scholarship response mail, but I couldn't look at it. Not yet.

"I know you’re in here, wallowing like a wounded animal," Vivienne hissed, stepping into the cramped room. "Do you think because you were rejected, you get a holiday? Do you think the world stops because Malakai realized you were a mistake?"

"No, Vivienne," I whispered, my voice sounding thin and alien to my own ears.

"Good. Because we have guests. The Beta and his family are coming over to celebrate Malakai and Cecily’s union. Your father expects perfect dinner."

She leaned in, her eyes Narrowing. "And since you’re the only thing in this house that isn't fit to be seen in the dining hall, you’ll be in the kitchen. You will cook. Everything."

.

"I... I don't feel well," I tried, my voice cracking.

Vivienne laughed, a sharp, metallic sound. "You’re a werewolf, Jasmine. Or at least, you pretend to be. We don't get 'sick' from a broken heart. We get busy. You have two hours. If that table isn't full by the time Malakai arrives, I’ll have your father put you in the silver-lined cells for the night. Do I make myself clear?"

"Yes," I choked out.

I immediately went into the kitchen to start dinner feeling like a pilot flying blind.

I kept leaning over the pots, inhaling deeply, trying to catch even a faint hint of the spices.

"Move it, defect!"

Cecily sauntered into the kitchen, wearing a dress that cost more than the scholarship I was praying for. It was a deep, blood-red colour that clung to her curves—the same curves I had seen Malakai gripping just hours ago. She looked radiant, her skin glowing with the afterglow of their betrayal.

"Malakai is going to be here in thirty minutes," she said, checking her reflection in the polished surface of a hanging copper pot.

"He’s been working up an appetite. He told me earlier that I was the most 'delicious' thing he’d ever tasted."

She looked at me, waiting for me to flinch. I kept my eyes on the stew, stirring it with a wooden spoon

"Don't worry, Jasmine," Cecily continued, her voice dripping with fake sympathy. "Once we’re mated and he’s the Beta, I’ll make sure he lets you stay on as our head maid. You always were good at cleaning up after me."

"Get out, Cecily," I said, my voice harsh, I have had enough of her bitter remarks.

"Oh, big words for a girl with a broken bond. Just make sure the everything is perfect. Malakai hates overcooked meat."

‘Malakai hates overcooked meat’ I mimicked her fake sugary voice while making an ugly face.

She humped, stomping her foot as she walked out of the kitchen in annoyance, Cecily and I were age mates so I wasn't afraid of speaking back at her unlike her mum.

I set the timer on the wall, but in my distraction, I didn't realize the dial had stuck.

I went to the far counter to chop more herbs for the garnish, my back turned to the stove. I was lost in the memory of Malakai’s eyes, the way they had looked at me with such absolute loathing.

How could a fated bond be so cruel? How could the Moon Goddess pair a soul that wanted to love with a soul that wanted to destroy?

Suddenly, a loud, panicked shout echoed from the doorway.

"What the hell is that smell?!"

"Jasmine! Are you trying to burn the house down?!"

I spun around, my heart dropping into my stomach.

A thick, grey smoke was billowing from the edges of the oven door.

"Oh no," I gasped, lunging for the oven.

"You stupid, clumsy freak!" Vivienne’s voice boomed as she appeared behind Diana my second step-sister.

She pushed past her daughter, her face purple with rage. She grabbed a towel and began waving the smoke away, but the damage was done.

The kitchen was now filled with a cloud of burnt fat and scorched sugar. Even without my sense of smell, I could see the ruin.

"I... the timer... I didn't smell it," I stammered, my hands shaking as I pulled the smoking tray from the oven.

"You didn't smell it?" Vivienne grabbed me by the arm, her fingers digging into my skin with bruising force. "A wolf can smell a scorched hair from a mile away! Are you so useless that you can't even perform the basic functions of our kind?!"

"I can't smell anything!" I yelled back, the truth finally exploding out of me. "I haven't been able to smell anything since he rejected me! My wolf is silent, Vivienne! I’m smell-blind!"

The silence that followed was heavy. Diana and Cecily exchanged a look of shocked amusement. Vivienne, however, just let out a cold, sharp huff of laughter.

"Even better," Vivienne whispered, her face inches from mine. "Not only are you a late-shifter and a reject, but you’re a cripple. A smell -blind werewolf. You truly are a defect Jasmine."

At that moment, the front door opened. The heavy boots of our Beta and his son echoed in the hallway…

~Lucien~"What kind of woman would send her men to attack her son’s mate? She isn’t an enemy. She’s like our wife, our princess. She belongs to this family now."I watched as her lips twisted into a tight line. She turned around to face me fully, slamming the brush down onto the table."I will not just watch you and your brothers get mated to that girl," she said, her voice rising to match mine. "She has seduced you three with her gentle look, and you are all too blind to see it. Lucien, can’t you see what is happening? How can she keep three of you to herself? It is greedy. It is a scandal. The three princes of the werewolf clan with one single mate. The packs will talk. She will be sleeping with all three brothers. Don’t you see the kind of gossip a mate like that will create? Don’t you see the shame it will bring to me and your father, the king?"She took a step toward me, her chest heaving in anger. "This throne... we have toiled for it over the years. We bled for this territory

~Lucien~I stood perfectly still, watching him carefully. He had been my bodyguard since I was eighteen. Six years now. And in all that time, he had never lied to me. He had always given me the truth, even when it was ugly. Why would he start now? What would he gain by starting a war between the princes and the queen?"All right, I agree," I said. "I will ask her myself. And Benjamin... I am not mad at you. Not really. I know you’re just carrying out your job. But I wish you had informed me first." Benjamin nodded slowly, his eyes watching me wearily. "I am going to see her now," I told him, stepping past him toward the door. "Do you want to come?"He opened his mouth to speak, then shut it without saying anything. He looked down at the floor. I didn’t need him to say it. I had my answer. He had done his part by apologizing. He wasn’t going to involve himself in a confrontation between a prince and the queen.I left my room and made the long walk to the queen’s wing. The castle

~Lucien~It took everything in me to stay calm when Kalean said he was sending those severed heads to our mother. The words left his mouth easily, like he was talking about something light. But the shock of them still had my body shaking with anger. I stood there, staring at him.I found it hard to believe that our mother would actually send her personal men to kill our mate. It made no sense. My mother was a queen, yes, but she was also the woman who raised me with gentleness. I felt something was wrong somewhere. There had to be a missing piece, a misunderstanding, or a lie. I tried so hard to remain in that room, to act like a prince and keep my composure. Then, the worst happened. Jasmine fainted.Kalean lost his mind, turning all his anger on me, glaring with his jaw clenched, accusing me with his eyes as if it were my fault she collapsed. It wasn’t my fault. I had warned her before we even stepped foot down there. I looked her in the face and told her how brutal his questioni

~Jasmine~"You want to go back to Ivory Spire? You think you'd be safe there? Did you forget what happened before we brought you to Ravenwood? You were poisoned, Jasmine! You can't even go back. You can't. Start your studies here tomorrow. Don't even let Kalean hear you say this."I looked at him in shock, my mouth trembling as tears blurred my gaze."I'm done for," I said softly, He looks at me, his brow furrowed, "My life was perfectly normal before I met you three! Every single time I have been in danger is because of you triplets!" I yelled, the tears pouring down my cheeks."Jas," he muttered, reaching his hand out to touch my wet cheek, but I stepped back quickly, "I can't have a normal life anymore, Cas! Fuck! If they find out my wolf is silent, imagine what they will do to me!”"Reduce your voice, Jasmine," he warned, his eyes flashed to the bedroom door. "You need to quiet down.""I don't care anymore, Cas! I don't!" I yelled back, refusing to quiet down as the sheer exhau

~Jasmine~I woke up feeling numb and disoriented. I blinked twice as my vision cleared, then remembered what had happened. I had fainted, slumped right into Lucien's body outside the cells. The image of Kalean coldly slitting the necks of the queen's personal men appeared in my mind, making me suddenly feel chilly. I moved, trying to drag my sheet over my body, only to see I wasn't the only one on the bed.Caspian was laying facing the other side, snoring softly.I looked around, I was in my room. Apart from just I and Caspian, there was no one else. I felt my body soften as I moved closer to him, but tried not to touch him, just close enough to feel his heat, he stirred a bit then turned, as if he could feel me already. I watched him open his eyes to look at me. I smiled at him as he rubbed his face."What are you doing in my bed?" I whispered as he drew me closer to his body until his naked chest was touching my body.He wrapped his arms around my waist, sniffing me as he inhale

~Jasmine~I sat on the edge of my bed for three hours. I had taken a shower, washed Rhet's dried blood out of my hair, before changing into a simple pair of dark jeans and a plain black sweater. The silence in my room was deafening, everytime time I closed my eyes, I saw the teeth of those wolves and Rhet collapsing into the dirt. Finally, a knock rang on my door.Lucien walked in wearing fresh clothes."They are back," He said quietly as if still reluctant to let me go see for myself. "They caught the remaining men, they're in the cells.""Did they say anything yet?" I asked, moving to meet him by the door, my mind would not rest until I found out who sent them."No," Lucien replied, turning to lead the way. "Kalean wanted to wait until we were all present. Caspian is already down there."I nodded following him out of the residence quarters. He led me to a hidden door tucked behind a staircase. We walked down a long corridor that went deep underground, the air there felt cold.
