Let Them Watch

Three days after I signed Ethans contract I moved out of Davens apartment.

Chloe helped me pack like she said she would. We did it fast. Didn't talk much. I packed two bags of clothes, a box of books and a few things from the kitchen that were mine before he moved in. I left the rest. I didn't want anything that he had touched.

My Aunt Rita's spare room became mine. It was small. The bed was too soft and the walls were thin.. It was all mine.

Ethan's team had been in touch with me ever since. Claire sent me instructions, schedules and things I needed to know before my official appearance with Ethan. I read everything carefully. Said very little. I was good at being quiet and doing exactly what I was told. I have been doing it my whole life.

On Thursday morning Claire called.

"There is dinner tonight. Mr Voss needs you to be there by seven. A car will come at six thirty."

"Tonight?" I said. "That is. I don't have anything to wear to a dinner like that."

There was a pause.

"Check your door " Claire. Hung up.

I opened the door of Aunt Rita's flat.

There was a garment bag hanging on the handle.. Beside it is a small box. I unzipped the bag slowly. A dress. Dark green is simply perfectly fitted. I didn't want to think about how someone had gotten my measurements.

Aunt Rita appeared behind me.

"Who sent that?" She asked.

"Someone who likes to be prepared, " I said.

She gave me a look and went back to her tea smiling.

The car came at six thirty exactly. The driver didn't speak. I sat in the back in the dress with my hands folded in my lap and told myself I was fine.

The dinner was at a hotel in the city centre. The kind of place where everything was too quiet and too expensive and everyone in the room knew who everyone else was. The driver opened my door. I stepped out.

Ethan was already outside waiting.

He looked at me once quickly like he was checking that everything was in order. Then he held out his arm.

"Stay close, " he said quietly. "Smile when people look. You don't have to say much."

"I know how to be invisible, " I said.

Something moved across his face. He looked at me for a second longer than necessary.

"That is not what I need tonight, " he said.

We walked in together.

The room was full. Voices, movement, the clink of glasses. People noticed Ethan away. They always did. And then their eyes moved to me. I kept my shoulders back. My face was calm and I stayed at his side and I didn't look at the floor once.

It was the thing I had done since walking back into that wedding venue.

We were forty minutes in when I felt it. That feeling on the back of your neck when someone is staring at you.

I turned slowly.

There he was.

Daven. Standing near the entrance with a drink in his hand completely still staring at me.

Beside him was Elena.

Her eyes found me at the moment.. Unlike Daven, whose face had gone blank Elenas face changed. Her jaw tightened. Her smile disappeared. She looked at the dress at Ethan beside me at the way Ethans hand had moved to the small of my back without either of us noticing.

I turned back to the conversation in front of me.

My heart was going fast. I kept my face still.

"You know someone, " Ethan said quietly beside me. Not a question.

Yes, I answered.

"My ex fiancé, " I said. ". My former best friend."

A pause.

"Together?"

"Together."

Another pause. Then Ethan did something I didn't expect. He turned slightly toward me. Said quietly:

"Then let them watch."

I didn't look back at Daven for the rest of the evening.

I felt his eyes on me the entire time.

When the dinner ended and we stepped back outside Ethan walked me to the car. He opened the door himself. Just before I got in he stopped.

"You did well tonight, " he said.

I looked at him.

"You sound surprised."

"I am " he said simply.. Walked away.

I got into the car.

My phone buzzed before we had even left the car park.

Daven.

"We need to talk. Tonight. It is Sofia. Please."

I read the message.

Then another one came through. This time from a number I didn't recognise. Different from the number that had been contacting me before. A new one.

"Do not meet Daven alone. He knows you have been talking to Voss.. Sofia. He is not the one you should be afraid of right now."

I stared at the screen.

Two messages. Two different people. Both, about Daven.

A warning that the person I should actually be afraid of was still out there.

The car pulled out into the street.

I looked out the window at the city moving

Someone was watching everything.

They were getting closer.

Ethan was in room 412.I went to the hospital. There were two police officers standing outside his door. They looked at me. I looked back at them. Then Ms Adu, the lawyer that Mr Osei had called, stepped forward. I talked to them quietly. They let me through after that.I opened the door and went inside.Ethan was sitting up in his bed. He had a dressing on the side of his head and a cut above his eyebrow that had been closed with stitches. He stared at me when I walked in.For a moment his face was tight and controlled. Then it relaxed a little."You filed the documents, " he said."I filed them two hours ago, " I said. "The injunction has been stayed. The shares are now in my name."He nodded, like he had known I would do it. I sat down beside his bed.We looked at each other for a moment. There was a lot to say, but neither of us said anything. Then I said, "The article.""I know, " he said.I said, "Tell me about the deal, seven years. Tell me yourself before someone else does."

  • Left At The Altar Loved By A Billionaire    Chapter Twenty-Three. The Last Conversation

Ethan's security team tracked Elena's phone in eleven minutes. She had not even turned it off which means Elena was either not as smart as I thought she was or she wanted to be found.Elena was at a hotel three kilometer from the house in a ground-floor room with the light on.I told Grace and my father to go to the hospital. I told the security guard driving me to take me to the hotel first. He looked unsure. I gave him a look and he stopped looking uncertain.I knocked on the door. There was silence, some movement and then the door opened.Elena looked at me. She did not look surprised. She stepped back. Let me in.The room was small with a bag on the bed that was half packed with her phone on the table. We stood looking at each other for a moment, two women who had known each other since we were fifteen years old who had shared everything and who had sat on each other's beds talking about the future.I did not feel nostalgic, I felt cold."The article, that was you " I said to Elena

  • Left At The Altar Loved By A Billionaire    Chapter Twenty Two. One Victory, One War

My father's lawyer, Mr Osei, was a quiet man who had been handling the Wren family's legal matters for 22 years. He possessed the kind of calm professionalism money couldn’t buy.He did not ask us many questions when we arrived at his office at eleven at night. He didn’t ask why we all looked half-mad, or why we were breathing as if we had just run a marathon. He simply adjusted his glasses,He looked at the documents, looked at me and looked at Grace standing behind me. Then he said:"Give me forty minutes."I stared at the folder in my hands. Thought about my grandfather, Arthur Wren. He was a man I had never met. He built something with another man fifty years ago. Kept his part of it until he died. He did this for me, a granddaughter he would never know.I thought about the letter he wrote. His handwriting was neat and careful. He wrote about protection as if it were the important thing.I hoped I was doing what he wanted me to do.Mr Osei returned exactly after thirty-eight minutes

None of us brought it up.We both pretended as if nothing happened. He told everyone about the plan. Our eyes met across the table and we looked at each other for a second too long before we looked away.Grace noticed. I could tell by the way she looked at us and said nothing. Grace is the kind of woman who notices everything and says nothing. My mother noticed too.. She said something at the worst possible time. She came up to me while I was standing by the window and said very quietly:"He looks at you the way your father used to look at me before things got complicated.""Mum, " I said."I am just saying," she walked away.I put my forehead against the window and told myself to focus.Ethan's team had found Elena's address. The house was real. It matched what we were looking for.. They used a drone to take pictures, which showed people inside. Several peo

  • Left At The Altar Loved By A Billionaire    Chapter Twenty. What Elena Knows

Elena stood in the doorway. She looked smaller than I had ever seen her. The Elena I knew always walked into rooms as if she owned them. She laughed loudly. She made sure everyone noticed her. This woman looked like she had been drained."Sit down, " Ethan said. His voice was not warm.. Not mean either. Just a voice that needed information and was willing to wait.Elena sat.I stayed standing. I did not want to sit near her. I was not sure I ever would."Talk, " I said. She looked at me. For the time in all the years I had known her Elena did not try to control her face."Three days ago he called me, " she said. "Your uncle. He told me the plan was almost done. He told me my part was over. I will be taken care of.""Take care of how, " Ethan asked."That is what I thought at first, " Elena said. "Money. A new place to go. A clean exit.
