Chapter 3

Author: Pansy Wilde
I did not expect my stomach to suddenly cramp. My face went pale, and the cold seeped into my whole body.

"Are you done yet? Why are you taking so long?"

Derek kept urging me.

After a while, his voice disappeared.

Something was wrong.

When I came out of the restroom, my car was gone.

There was nothing outside but endless white snow.

Derek had driven off in my car.

I could not help cursing out loud before shrinking back into the restroom from the cold.

"What kind of person does that?"

I hurriedly called Derek. He ignored more than a dozen calls before his voice finally came through.

"Derek Caldwell! Drive the car back right now. I haven't gotten in!"

His voice was full of impatience.

"Whose fault is it that you were so slow? My time is more valuable than yours. Consider this your punishment."

I exploded with rage.

"Who do you think you are? Punishment? Have some shame. Drive the car back now, or I'm calling the police."

Derek sounded like a man who could not understand human speech.

"Don't play hard to get with me. I don't buy that. This is all your fault anyway. You listened to the traffic cop and wasted my time.

"Don't worry, you won't freeze to death. This is your test before you become my girlfriend."

He hung up with a slam.

I felt like I had been forced to swallow something vile.

My head buzzed with anger.

Where did this overconfident idiot come from?

A test?

I wanted to smash a hammer into his skull.

I was about to call again when, in the distance, the signal tower collapsed under the weight of the snow.

The snow burst outward, startling birds into the air.

I watched my signal drop to zero, and my heart sank.

"Damn it. Why is it so cold?"

My hands and feet were like blocks of ice. Only the restroom offered even a little shelter from the wind.

But out on the northern snowfields, in twenty-two-below-zero weather, I was wearing only a thin down jacket. I could not hold out for long.

I tried dialing emergency services, but it was useless.

All I could do was hope that some passing car would appear.

Unfortunately, from daylight until dark, I did not see a single vehicle.

It seemed no one came to this abandoned service area anymore.

The heavy snow quickly covered my footprints. I had no choice but to keep jumping in place to maintain body heat.

But the cold pierced into my bones from every direction.

I was so frozen I was about to pass out.

"Quick, check over there. Can the signal tower be repaired?"

Voices drifted into my ears.

My eyes flew open.

Someone was here.

With the last of my strength, I pounded on the glass, trying to attract the rescue crew's attention.

My dry throat tore as I shouted, "Help!"

At last, my movement drew someone over.

"My God! Miss, why are you here alone?"

The moment I saw the police officer approach, I finally let myself faint.

When I woke again, I was in the reception room of the local police station.

A female officer immediately brought me a cup of water.

"Miss, you're finally awake.

"Why were you out there alone? If our team hadn't gone to check the signal tower today, you would have been in real danger."

I quickly drank a few mouthfuls of hot water and looked at her gratefully.

"Thank you, officer."

"Don't mention it. It's what we're supposed to do."

The female officer looked at me with concern.

"Did something happen to you?"

I picked up my phone and realized that during the hours I had been missing, Derek had completely forgotten about me.

If the police had not rescued me, I really would have died there.

Goose bumps crawled over my whole body.

My disgust for Derek reached its peak.

Especially because he had driven away in my car.

Then an idea turned in my head.

"Officer, I was robbed.

"My car was stolen. There were also three cases of Macallan and ten gold bars in it."

The police arrived quickly, and everyone involved was taken to the station.I heard Derek was beaten badly by every member of the Reeves family. The whole thing caused chaos. StarCreative's legal department also filed a lawsuit against Derek. This time, he was completely finished. When my aunt came to find me, I was not surprised at all."Jenna, your aunt was foolish. You can't just ignore your brother-in-law's company."They've had such a hard time these past few years. If you want to blame someone, blame me, all right? It was all my fault."I truly know I was wrong. Please forgive me."I smiled."Aunt Margaret, you would never be wrong."I reflected carefully on your words. I really am an older unmarried woman with no ability. How could I manage my brother-in-law's affairs?"How about this? Have Tessa find another good man. Won't that solve everything?"My aunt's face instantly darkened at my sarcasm.I knew it.She was not sincerely apologizing at all. She simply wante

"Why haven't the mother and daughter left yet? Don't tell me they're jealous.""Of course they are. They must be regretting it now."Derek heard it too.He raised his head arrogantly and walked up to me."Well? Did you see that? The StarCreative director is my guy. If you agree to be my girlfriend, your life won't be bad."Tessa Reeves swayed over."Derek, didn't you say I was your girlfriend?"Those two were truly a perfect match.I looked at them in disgust."You two should stay locked together. No one else wants either of you."If I stayed in the same space as them any longer, I would suffocate.I turned to leave just as Martin Blake came out of the restroom. The moment he saw me, he was so startled his glasses fell to the floor.Derek immediately stepped forward to block me."Are you blind? You knocked Director Blake's glasses off. Pick them up for him."Martin waved his hands in fear and quickly picked them up himself."No need..."Derek would not let it go."Jen

Derek turned his head and saw me. His face immediately looked unpleasant."Aunt Margaret, aren't we here to talk business? I don't want irrelevant people here."My aunt instantly snatched the silverware from my hand."Did you hear him? Hurry up and leave."My mother's eyes reddened with anger."Margaret. This is your own niece. I didn't argue with you on Rachel's wedding day, but now you're pushing it too far."Tessa Reeves sneered."Aunt Linda, didn't you come to the wedding just to make trouble for us?"You ruined my mom's reputation. Today, Derek came to sign a contract because of my brother-in-law. We, the hosts, don't welcome you. Why are you insisting on staying? Aren't you embarrassed?"I immediately stepped in front of my mother. I also wanted to see my cousin's attitude."Since you're talking about hosts, today's hosts are your sister and brother-in-law. If either of them says one word asking me to leave, I'll go immediately."I stood up in my heels, half a head tal

Derek had no choice. He could only speak loudly."I drove her car away, so she wants revenge on me."The officer pointed at my car."Whose car is this?"Derek changed his statement completely."It's hers. It must be that she lost the Macallan and gold bars herself. That has nothing to do with me, officer. If you're going to arrest someone, arrest her.""Then why did you say she was your girlfriend?"Derek was nearly crying from panic."No, she is just my blind date.""Then what do you mean by driving away in someone else's car and leaving her at the service area?"At that point, everyone understood what had happened. Derek had lost all face."So it really was robbery? That poor girl. He tried to force the girlfriend label on her too."Derek panicked completely."I didn't rob her. I didn't mean it."He looked at me in terror."Jenna, I didn't mean it. I was just... I was just joking."Yes. It was just a joke. Jenna, I don't want to go to prison."I shook off his hand.

"Good grief, that has to be worth at least three hundred thousand.""Wow, Derek has some nerve."Derek panicked."Who said I took them? I never saw those things."I gritted my teeth and put on the look of someone righteous enough to turn in her own family."Derek, just admit it. The police are here now. You can't run."How could you do something like this?"I handed the police the dash-cam footage I had prepared in advance."Officers, please look. I installed this camera yesterday."I really never imagined he would do something like this. If it wasn't for money, why would he leave me on the highway? It makes no sense. I clearly told him those were my boss's things."I cried like a woman betrayed by a heartless man, then grabbed Derek's mother."Ma'am, please talk to Derek. He won't listen to me, even though I'm his girlfriend."Derek's mother's face turned ugly, and she hurried away from me."Go away. If he stole something, what does that have to do with me?"The moment s

But his words were full of holes, and people were already noticing."What kind of person doesn't even remember how much his own car cost?""He doesn't look like this car belongs to him. He isn't wearing a single designer item. How could he afford a car like that?"At that moment, I walked over to the car."This is not his car at all. He robbed me halfway and drove away in my car."The car's smart system immediately detected my voice."Welcome back, owner.""My God, a robber.""Wow. People steal cars like this now?""I'm dying. He stole the car and still acted so righteous about it?"In an instant, the crowd moved well back from Derek, as if afraid of catching something from him.Derek's face turned bright red.The officer warned him directly."Derek Caldwell, what else do you have to say?"Seeing the police approach, Derek suddenly turned to me."Honey, don't be mad and file a false report. I know this is your car. I shouldn't have left you there alone, but you can't was
