Chapter 3

Author: Spicy Shrimp
Connie quickly opened the car door and chased after me. She grabbed my arm.

“Dave, don’t take it the wrong way! Didn’t I say that I wanted to buy you a sports car? I’m here to test the car to see if it’s any good!”

Before I could say a word, Pete walked over and smiled innocently.

“Dave, I heard Connie wanted to buy a new car. I’m very interested in sports cars as well, so I came over to learn about it.

“Connie said that since I helped with the proposal, she’s going to buy me a car too! That’s why she’s teaching me.”

I looked at them and snorted.

“What do you have to do with the proposal? What have you contributed?”

I did not hold back.

Pete’s face drained of color as he looked at Connie with pleading eyes.

I did not want to see them put on this pathetic act. I flung Connie’s hand away and walked away.

Connie seemed anxious. She wanted to chase after me when Pete suddenly yelped in pain. “Connie, I sprained my ankle. Ouch!”

Connie stopped in her tracks.

When I reached home, it was pitch-black.

I lay on the bed after taking a shower. Then, I hopped onto social media.

The first post was from Pete.

[Thank you, Ms. Anderson, for the sports car and for teaching me how to operate one. It’s such a lovely experience!]

He posted a photo of them sitting in the sports car in matching racing suits.

After I muted his account, I sent Connie the divorce agreement that I had drafted earlier.

Half an hour passed, but Connie did not respond to me.

It seemed like she did not care enough to respond to my texts anymore.

She was ignoring me. Communication had become unimportant in our seven-year marriage.

I put down my phone and went to sleep.

The next morning, I woke up to my phone ringing.

When I answered the call, the assistant, Greg Smith, sounded really anxious. “Dave, come to the office now! Something bad has happened!”

I ended the call and pushed the blanket aside.

I looked at the spot next to me. There were no wrinkles on the bed sheet.

It meant Connie had not returned home last night.

Even when we were not affectionate anymore and worked different schedules, we would always try not to disturb the other person’s sleep.

We were usually able to tell if the other person had returned home.

She was not even coming home anymore.

I did not dwell in my sadness. I put on my clothes and went straight to the office.

When I reached the office, I found out that one of my old clients had been there to talk about future collaboration.

Pete had taken over the case and ruined the collaboration.

Our client was furious, and he requested that we immediately resolve the issue.

When I heard that, I could feel my temple throbbing.

I was very familiar with this project, so I immediately hopped into action and got into a virtual meeting with the client.

After making many attempts to convince them, they finally gave in. My first crisis was resolved. It was then that I finally could take a break.

I went to the common working area and saw Pete at his desk. I asked coldly, “Who allowed you to take my client?”

Three months later, Connie was alone. She neither had the company nor me. Pete abandoned her. She had a bit of money with her, but it would only be enough for her to survive for the next six months. She had given up on herself. She drank profusely to cope. She lost almost ten pounds. Her cheekbones were prominent, and she did not dare to look into the mirror. On a random weekend, Connie left her rental house. She took the bus for two hours and arrived at the racetrack. It was the place where we had met each other and started our relationship. It was also the place where she waited for me at the finish line with a bouquet of sunflowers after every competition. There was a competition today. There were a lot of spectators, and it was loud at the racetrack. Connie walked to a corner and looked at the starting line. She froze. There was a brand-new red Aston Martin at the starting line. I was in it in my racing suit and helmet. She recognized me at a single glance.

Connie held her phone as tears streamed down her cheeks. She stood under a street lamp. She walked absent-mindedly along the street. When she could walk no further, she sat down on a bench at the side of the road. Memories of our wedding day played in her mind. She stood before the mirror in her wedding gown. I walked in and stood behind her. I watched her for a really long time. She asked, “Are you done looking at me?”I said, “No. I’ll never get sick of this view for my whole life.” Forever seemed like a funny promise. She had ruined the relationship in just seven years. She was overwhelmed with regret. She held her hands against her face and sobbed uncontrollably. She then fell asleep on the bench. The next morning, a janitor woke her up. “Hey, wake up! Don’t sleep here. You’re going to freeze to death.” Connie jolted awake. Her entire body was aching. She looked at her crumpled clothes and messy hair. She suddenly recalled Liam mentioning the Reid family yes

Liam sneered and said, “Dave said that he doesn’t even want to look at you!”Connie was hurt by his words. She pushed her chair back and stood up. There was only one thought in her head, which was to look for me. She rushed out without hesitation. Pete grabbed onto her tightly. “Connie, you can’t leave! What will happen to me if you leave?”Connie roared with teary eyes, “Get away from me! Don’t touch me!” She flung his hand away. Her nails scratched the back of his hand and left a red mark. Liam said coldly, “Ms. Anderson, you can’t leave. You have to sign the papers to hand over the company and the assets.” Connie rushed out of the office and into the elevator. When she reached the basement parking lot, she walked toward her car dejectedly. Pete chased after her and stopped her from opening her car door. “Connie, Dave no longer wants you! You only have me now!” Pete said anxiously. Connie flung his hand away and slapped him. The slap was very loud. “Who do y

Pete walked in with a glass of milk and placed it on her desk. “Connie, drink some milk. Dave’s just angry. Once he cools down, he’ll definitely come back!”Connie took a sip of the milk. She glanced at Pete as her thoughts drifted. Pete was a handsome young man. He was a sweet-talker too. When she was with him, she felt as though she were young again. She enjoyed the feeling of being pursued and sweet-talked to.She had not felt this for a long time. She knew that it was wrong, but she could not control herself. She was just about to put down the glass of milk when someone suddenly opened her office door. The loud bang startled Pete and Connie. Liam walked in with four lawyers behind him and a few expressionless bodyguards. Connie was stunned. She felt that Liam looked familiar, but she could not pinpoint why. “Who are you? Who allowed you to enter my office? Security!” Liam glanced at her before walking toward her desk. Then, he slammed the asset agreement and

After I left the company, I sat in the car for a while. Finally, the lump in my throat was gone. It was then that I took out my phone and called my older brother, Liam Reid. “Hello, stranger!” Liam laughed over the phone. “What made you call me today?”I did not greet him with pleasantries. Instead, I asked, “Liam, I’ve already completed my handover today. Can I pass the company over tomorrow?”He chuckled. He sounded a little sad. “The legal team and merger team are ready. Tomorrow at nine in the morning, I’ll bring them over personally.“What happened? You chose to start your own business with that woman back then. You started everything from scratch.“Did you hit a wall?”I leaned against the car seat and laughed at myself. “That’s right. I hit a wall. I no longer want to deal with that mess. Thank you for handling it.”Liam no longer sounded like he was joking. He lowered his voice. “Alright, it’s just a small matter. No matter what happens, we’ll always be your saf

Connie had never thought that I would say those words to her. She looked puzzled and angry at the same time. “Dave, it’s just a proposal. You’re divorcing me just because of that? You really want me to leave?“Our company is successful because I was the one who worked on it with you! It’s the fruit of my labor too! How can you tell me to leave?”I did not say anything. I found the situation ridiculous. I was the one who came up with the starting fund, the core technology, and the initial networks. After our company was established, I felt bad for her, so I let her be the CEO to make major decisions. I even transferred 30% of my shares to her. I felt like I had been too naive. The situation was tight. Pete put on a pitiful expression. He tugged on Connie’s sleeves. “Connie, don’t be mad! Dave’s only saying these out of anger…“Maybe I should leave… Don’t ruin your relationship with Dave just because of me,” he said sincerely. Connie felt that I was being unreasonable.
