*CHRIS*

Mira’s been gone for a while now, and honestly, this break was exactly what I needed to finally get myself together. I didn’t need the drama or the constant reminders of my mistakes. I’d forgotten what it felt like to be alone, and surprisingly, I was actually enjoying it.

Sure, I missed having Mira around for company and companionship, but the tension in our relationship was unbearable, and I didn’t miss it. I wanted to talk to her, but I knew that wasn’t a good idea. So, I decided to focus on myself, and if she ever came around, it would be on her terms, not mine forcing her again.

I’ve still been smoking and occasionally drinking, but not as heavily. I think I’m starting to come to terms with the loss of my brother and my unborn child. Man, that baby would have been close to one by now. Everything happens for a reason, I guess.

With little to no distractions, I threw myself into work more and was able to finally get those cars out of the shop that we’ve been sitting on for months. The ones that have been there for months and the owners never came back for. We turned those into our loner cars for people who either didn’t want to or couldn’t afford to get a rental car.

The parts that were ordered had been sitting on the shelves for what felt like an eternity, and thank goodness I went back to sort it out. Finally, I was able to get to Theodore’s car and start working on it. Since he’s a longtime customer and has been waiting a while for his car, I decided to stay a little later today to work on it some more.

The sooner he’s out of my hair, the better. I let the boys know that I’d be staying later to work more on his car. Reggie wanted to help, but I sent him home. Besides, I needed the time alone to reflect and think about everything. My life, my priorities, and the company. I’d somehow veered off course and needed to get back on track.

I hated that my dad wasn’t here to help, but he’s just a call away, and if I really needed him, I’d do that.

It was around 10 p.m. when I decided to leave the shop. I had completed most of the work, but the remaining tasks required daylight or the purchase of parts. I left a note on my desk to resume where I left off tomorrow.

I closed up the shop meticulously. I ensured that all doors and windows were locked, the register was securely closed, and the counters, tables, and bathroom were thoroughly cleaned and organized. Before heading to my car, I set the alarm.

I parked my car in the back. So that meant leaving through the back entrance, primarily used by employees. The area was dimly lit by a streetlight that flickered intermittently.

As I approached my car, I felt a searing pain in the back of my head, as if my eyes were splitting from behind. The clinking of metal echoed through my ears, causing them to ring. I turned around to see who was behind me, but I collapsed to the ground instead, rapidly blinking to regain my vision. I heard footsteps approaching and attempted to swing my fists in that direction, but I was too slow. A blow to my jaw followed, causing immense pain.

I began to taste metal in my mouth, realizing it was blood. By the time my vision returned, I was being stomped on by what felt like steel-toed boots. The impact was heavy on my ribs and chest, and I curled up to protect what remained of my body.

I started choking as more blood poured into my mouth. I rolled over slightly to direct the blood onto the pavement. When the attack ended, I lay there, trembling as I tried to scream for help.

It was late, of course, and no one came. Everything was excruciatingly painful, as if glass was cutting through me with every movement and breath I tried to take. Each inch stung. I lay there in agony until my vision faded. I thought, “This is it, this is how I die.”

After a while, I saw a blinding white light and heard beeping noises. I looked around and saw my mom and Mira at my side. Although I couldn’t feel anything, I was filled with gratitude for being alive, even if it meant being in a hospital bed hooked up to machines and a breathing tube.

I was surprised to see Mira after what had happened, but that moment was short-lived. Soon after I opened my eyes, she left without a word.

We sat in the parking lot for a moment before pulling off. During that time I checked my phone to see if I had any notifications from Kacie. Nothing. Of course she didn’t respond. She’s been acting weird as hell since she left. What got me was the fact that I told her she could’ve stayed. She insisted on leaving and creating this gap that didn’t have to exist. “Alright then sour patch, let’s go figure this out.” Now that I have Kayla with me, there was no way I was going back to work. I called my secretary and let her know I’d be working from home tomorrow and that I wasn’t returning to the office today either. This seemed like the perfect time to bond with Kayla like she’d been asking to do. We rode for twenty minutes before she finally realized we weren’t heading anywhere familiar to her. “Where are we going uncle?” “It’s a surprise.” I said with a grin on my face. Another thirty minutes and a playlist of Kayla’s favorite songs later, we were pulling into the par

*ERIC* “And why should we work with you?” “I’m glad you asked.” The man in the suit said as he opened his computer to show us the presentation he’d put together. This meeting was in the works for weeks as we tried to find the time to get together and discuss some things. From the looks of it, this guy was just reciting what someone else had put together for him. When certain questions were asked he’d either refer to something he previously said to make it sound good or he’d quickly skim through his notes. Things like that don’t usually go unnoticed around here and so far, this guy may just be leaving empty handed. While trying to focus on what this guy was saying, my phone vibrated in my pocket. In my mind I thought it was just a spam call or someone calling about an extended warranty I never knew existed. Each time my phone vibrated I let it go to voicemail. By the fourth back-to-back call, I leaned over and whispered to my project manager that I’d be back. She nodd

  • Love On Ice   The Last Safe Place

*AYANA* After a long day of taking X-rays, smelling breath, and passing out spit cups, I was ready to go home and sit my ass in some water with a nice glass of wine while I debate on what to do about my personal life. The last patient for the day just left, leaving me and Trish to lock up. After cleaning the office and the bathrooms, we set out unopened instruments for the next day. Trish was cool, but it was always this unchecked, uneasy energy about her. It was the kind that made you look back during a trust fall. Honestly I wouldn’t trust her ass to get me a cup of water. One time I was helping out at the front desk and this eerie feeling of someone watching me kept coming back out of nowhere. When scanning the room, she just stood there staring. Her gaze was unyielding and unsettling. She wanted me to see her, see me. I can’t get with that. Another time she had switched lunch times with me and when the boss came yelling at me, she just sat there and told this man that

  • Love On Ice   Late At Night

*CHRIS* I’ve been calling Mira a lot lately. After the conversation with my dad, I realized that I had to get her back. It’s not like I was going to let her go without a fight to begin with, but something about his words that really hit hard for me. ‘When you have a good girl, you do everything you can to keep ‘em.’ That’s all I could think about. Don’t get me wrong it’s not like I wanted to. Deep down, I knew this was my fault. Had I kept it in my pants I’m sure we’d still be in the townhouse together. But also, had it not been for that crunchy bitch Ayana, she would’ve never met that motherfucker at the club. I still want to know what he said to get her attention. She didn’t come back home with me until about four months into us dating. One night is all it took for this bastard to get in her panties. I couldn’t tell you what pissed me off more. The fact that it was sudden, the fact that she actually likes him, the fact that she kept going back, or the fact that she’s actuall

*ERIC* After Jamira showed up, I can’t lie, I felt better about all the stuff that’s been going on lately. She stayed a while to talk and help with filing a few things for me. I actually like having her here. She’s really helpful. After going through a few cases and finishing up on two of them, I decided I needed a break. I went to go to Walt’s office. Once I got to the door, Dina, yet again was all in Walt’s face. She was sitting on the armrest of his chair with her hand on his chest. Seriously, what do these two do all day? “Dina, leave!” She hesitated and looked between us before running out of his office. Walt threw his hands up and grunted. “Why?” “Dina’s not worth the distraction.” Walt just stared at me a few seconds before returning back to work. “Hey, so I was wondering how Kacie was settling into her new place?” He paused. “Wouldn’t know anything about it.” “How was she when you helped her move the last of it?” “Fine.” “I called and she tri

*JAMIRA* Ayana and I talked and laughed as she recounted the events from her date and everything that happened afterwards. That girl still hadn’t changed. “Okay, but why didn’t you call me? I would’ve picked you up.” “Girl you too busy playing house with that man all up in your business.” “You see where that got me.” We both laughed. “Speaking of that, how’s the baby?” “He’s fine. I’m just ready for him to come already.” “Just hang in there girl.” I smiled. It’s amazing how a simple phrase can make you feel better than you did before. Even though I was happy to be talking to Ayana, my mind stayed on Eric. Ever since Kacie left he’s been down in the dumps. I thought if I surprised him at work, he’d feel at least a little better. Then Walt was acting strange like he didn’t want to be bothered. Eric would never say it, but I could tell he felt that the whole interaction was…off. “Hello, hello?” Her voice pulled me away from my thoughts. For a moment I’d fo
