Foiled Plans

The rest of the day went by relatively well. However, I couldn’t shake the feeling of confusion and disbelief about what had transpired. I couldn’t comprehend Chris’s audacity in showing up at my workplace and expressing anger towards me for something he had caused. He had shattered our relationship, and now I was forced to endure his presence. Someone who had torn my world apart in an instant.

The drive to Ayana’s house was filled with turmoil. I was overcome with tears, torn between wanting to stay with my friend and avoiding any potential drama at her place in case Chris decided to show up there as well.

Upon entering Ayana’s house, she rushed to me, enveloping me in a tight embrace. I felt a momentary difficulty in breathing, but I knew she was genuinely concerned about my well-being.

“What’s wrong? Did they mess with you at that job?” she asked, her voice filled with concern.

I shook my head, struggling to hold back tears as I replied.

“Chris showed up at my job, and my boss informed me that if he returned, I would be fired. I love my job, Yana.”

“What on earth is his problem? Are you considering confronting him?”

“No, Yana. That won’t resolve anything. Then he insisted that I return home. Ayana, I can’t go there right now. I can’t look at that place the same after discovering what I know.”

“So, don’t go. He can’t harm you if you’re not there.”

“What if he comes here? You have enough going on. You don’t need my troubles spilling over into your life.”

“Fuck that and fuck him. He’d be a one-shot asshole if he came trotting over here looking like an old ass coondog.”

Her words struck a chord with me, and I couldn’t help but laugh uncontrollably. She had a way of saying the most outrageous things.

“Yana, what the hell is a coondog?” I asked, wiping away my tears.

“I’m not sure, but I imagine that’s what Chris would look like if it exists.”

The room fell silent, and a wave of worry and sadness washed over me once again.

“So, are you going back?” Ayana asked, her voice filled with concern.

“I’m scared,” I admitted, feeling overwhelmed by my emotions.

“Do you want me to come with you?” Ayana offered, her concern evident in her voice.

“Please,” I pleaded, my voice trembling.

“Alright, let’s put aside the drama and go get your things. You’re driving, though.”

We laughed and headed upstairs. Once we were done, we loaded the bags into the car and drove off. The ride back to what I thought was home was incredibly uncomfortable. I didn’t know what to expect when I walked through the door or even got out of the car.

When I parked and got out, the atmosphere felt eerily quiet. All the lights were off except for the one in the living room. My heart pounded as I unlocked the door. I stood there, frozen, as Chris looked at me with eyes as dark as ever.

He approached me, and that made me tremble. He ran his hand down my arm, sending chills down my spine, but my feet wouldn’t move to get me out of there.

He tried to kiss my neck, and my neck hairs stood straight up.

“You just don’t know how lonely I’ve been without you,” he said.

I wanted to vomit. Just then, Ayana finally appeared, and that made him stop and practically hiss at seeing her.

“I hope you didn’t miss us too much,” she said.

“Ugh. What is she doing here?”

“Fucking up your plans. Buster move!”

She pushed him to the wall before we both knew what was going on. I couldn’t be happier for Ayana’s intervention.

“I thought it was going to be just me and you,” he said, rubbing the front of his pants.

“Don’t touch her with those contaminated fingers of yours,” Ayana said.

She stepped forward and pulled me behind her. She couldn’t stand this man with every inch of her body. And it showed.

Outside of his mom, she was the only person I’d seen him back down from. He never challenged her, and I think it’s because she asserted herself from the very beginning.

I was so afraid that I asked Ayana to sit in the room while I showered. I wasn’t sure if he’d come up and try something. Anything.

She was hesitant at first, but then she gave in. I showered, hoping to wash away the feeling of Chris’ eyes on me. The water was hot, but not enough to forget the way it felt when he touched my arm. This was no longer someone I loved. I don’t even recognize this version of him.

I stepped out of the shower, dried off, and got dressed when Ayana approached the door. Her arms were folded, as usual, indicating that she had something important to say.

“You know you can’t keep living like this,” she said.

“Like what?” I asked.

“Like you want to be here when you don’t,” she replied.

I looked down at my feet, a nervous habit I had when I was unsure of what to do.

“What if he hurts someone I love?” I asked.

“You mean Eric?” Ayana asked.

I blushed when she mentioned his name.

“No, just in general,” I said.

Ayana burst into laughter, as if I had just told her the funniest joke she had ever heard. She must have noticed my frustration because she stopped laughing and looked me in the eye, saying something that I couldn’t ignore.

“Look, I’m going to always be here for you when you need me. That’s a given, but you have to figure out what it is you need to do.”

She was right. The longer I remained “neutral” or tried to play both sides, the worse things got. It wasn’t an easy decision to make, but it wasn’t a simple one either.

The more time I wasted, the more confused I became. I knew I had to do something.

We sat in the parking lot for a moment before pulling off. During that time I checked my phone to see if I had any notifications from Kacie. Nothing. Of course she didn’t respond. She’s been acting weird as hell since she left. What got me was the fact that I told her she could’ve stayed. She insisted on leaving and creating this gap that didn’t have to exist. “Alright then sour patch, let’s go figure this out.” Now that I have Kayla with me, there was no way I was going back to work. I called my secretary and let her know I’d be working from home tomorrow and that I wasn’t returning to the office today either. This seemed like the perfect time to bond with Kayla like she’d been asking to do. We rode for twenty minutes before she finally realized we weren’t heading anywhere familiar to her. “Where are we going uncle?” “It’s a surprise.” I said with a grin on my face. Another thirty minutes and a playlist of Kayla’s favorite songs later, we were pulling into the par

*ERIC* “And why should we work with you?” “I’m glad you asked.” The man in the suit said as he opened his computer to show us the presentation he’d put together. This meeting was in the works for weeks as we tried to find the time to get together and discuss some things. From the looks of it, this guy was just reciting what someone else had put together for him. When certain questions were asked he’d either refer to something he previously said to make it sound good or he’d quickly skim through his notes. Things like that don’t usually go unnoticed around here and so far, this guy may just be leaving empty handed. While trying to focus on what this guy was saying, my phone vibrated in my pocket. In my mind I thought it was just a spam call or someone calling about an extended warranty I never knew existed. Each time my phone vibrated I let it go to voicemail. By the fourth back-to-back call, I leaned over and whispered to my project manager that I’d be back. She nodd

*AYANA* After a long day of taking X-rays, smelling breath, and passing out spit cups, I was ready to go home and sit my ass in some water with a nice glass of wine while I debate on what to do about my personal life. The last patient for the day just left, leaving me and Trish to lock up. After cleaning the office and the bathrooms, we set out unopened instruments for the next day. Trish was cool, but it was always this unchecked, uneasy energy about her. It was the kind that made you look back during a trust fall. Honestly I wouldn’t trust her ass to get me a cup of water. One time I was helping out at the front desk and this eerie feeling of someone watching me kept coming back out of nowhere. When scanning the room, she just stood there staring. Her gaze was unyielding and unsettling. She wanted me to see her, see me. I can’t get with that. Another time she had switched lunch times with me and when the boss came yelling at me, she just sat there and told this man that

*CHRIS* I’ve been calling Mira a lot lately. After the conversation with my dad, I realized that I had to get her back. It’s not like I was going to let her go without a fight to begin with, but something about his words that really hit hard for me. ‘When you have a good girl, you do everything you can to keep ‘em.’ That’s all I could think about. Don’t get me wrong it’s not like I wanted to. Deep down, I knew this was my fault. Had I kept it in my pants I’m sure we’d still be in the townhouse together. But also, had it not been for that crunchy bitch Ayana, she would’ve never met that motherfucker at the club. I still want to know what he said to get her attention. She didn’t come back home with me until about four months into us dating. One night is all it took for this bastard to get in her panties. I couldn’t tell you what pissed me off more. The fact that it was sudden, the fact that she actually likes him, the fact that she kept going back, or the fact that she’s actuall

*ERIC* After Jamira showed up, I can’t lie, I felt better about all the stuff that’s been going on lately. She stayed a while to talk and help with filing a few things for me. I actually like having her here. She’s really helpful. After going through a few cases and finishing up on two of them, I decided I needed a break. I went to go to Walt’s office. Once I got to the door, Dina, yet again was all in Walt’s face. She was sitting on the armrest of his chair with her hand on his chest. Seriously, what do these two do all day? “Dina, leave!” She hesitated and looked between us before running out of his office. Walt threw his hands up and grunted. “Why?” “Dina’s not worth the distraction.” Walt just stared at me a few seconds before returning back to work. “Hey, so I was wondering how Kacie was settling into her new place?” He paused. “Wouldn’t know anything about it.” “How was she when you helped her move the last of it?” “Fine.” “I called and she tri

*JAMIRA* Ayana and I talked and laughed as she recounted the events from her date and everything that happened afterwards. That girl still hadn’t changed. “Okay, but why didn’t you call me? I would’ve picked you up.” “Girl you too busy playing house with that man all up in your business.” “You see where that got me.” We both laughed. “Speaking of that, how’s the baby?” “He’s fine. I’m just ready for him to come already.” “Just hang in there girl.” I smiled. It’s amazing how a simple phrase can make you feel better than you did before. Even though I was happy to be talking to Ayana, my mind stayed on Eric. Ever since Kacie left he’s been down in the dumps. I thought if I surprised him at work, he’d feel at least a little better. Then Walt was acting strange like he didn’t want to be bothered. Eric would never say it, but I could tell he felt that the whole interaction was…off. “Hello, hello?” Her voice pulled me away from my thoughts. For a moment I’d fo
