Last night and this morning were nothing short of incredible. I went to bed next to Jamira and woke up with her. I don’t know what it is about her, but I can’t seem to get enough of her. It’s been years since I’ve felt this way about anyone. The last girl I was serious with told me things were moving too fast after two years. In retrospect, that was total bullshit, but at the time, she had me second-guessing myself. Two weeks later, I found out she had gotten married and was backpacking across Europe for her honeymoon. It broke me. So much so that I went to therapy for it. Things feel familiar with Jamira. It’s as if I’ve known her for years. When I’m around her, my thoughts go quiet, and my worries fade away. So when she agreed to meet my parents, I was more than happy about it. I just knew she’d come up with some kind of excuse, but she didn’t. That meant a lot to me. On the ride back to her home, I couldn’t help but steal looks from her. I love the way the moon highlights her features, and how every time she looks at me, it’s a glimmer of wonder in her eyes. “You were great back there,” I said. “Well, you know, I do what I can,” she said jokingly. I tucked her hair behind her ear to see more of her beautiful face. “You truly are gorgeous.” “Thank you, you’re not too shabby yourself,” she replied. I laughed at that because what the hell. “I think my mom likes you, well, I hope she does.” “What makes you say that?” “She went all out. She doesn’t even do that for her own kids.” She smiled and interlocked her fingers with mine. The rest of the ride was mostly listening to the radio play and her occasionally yawning from sleepiness. I pulled up to her home and let her out of the car. She gave me a quick peck and a hug before retreating inside. On the ride home, she kept invading my thoughts. …. *Chris* I was so hungover that I ended up sleeping the entire day. When I woke up, I still felt the effects of the alcohol and was a bit unstable. I looked around and noticed that Jamira wasn’t in sight. For a moment, I considered calling her, but that would be pointless since we weren’t on the best of terms. I went and showered and prepared something to eat, hoping that the salt would help absorb more of the liquor. I instinctively went to the window and saw that her car was still outside. That was strange, in a way that was unsettling. She only left it when she was out with her so-called friends, but I don’t think she was with them. I was about to check her location when I heard a car pull up. I didn’t recognize this one, and I know her friends wouldn’t be seen in something so nice. So, who was this? Everything came together when I saw what happened next. I watched as he got out of the car, opened her door, and stood in front of her for a brief moment. I couldn’t make out what happened, but I wasn’t stupid. Wherever she had just come from, she had enjoyed it. There was an ache in my heart that I didn’t expect, perhaps because of my denial. It was one thing to have sex with him, but to like him. She was taking things too far. I looked at the clock and it said 10:45. I stood at the edge of the counter and stared at her as she walked through the door. “You’re back late,” I said accusingly. She just brushed it off as if it didn’t matter, which pissed me off. “Where were you?” “Out with the girls, Chris. What’s the big deal?” My heart sank as I realized she looked me in the eyes and lied without remorse. She ran up the stairs without even looking in my direction, as if I wasn’t there. I went to the couch and thought about my next move. Since she wants to keep playing games, she can have at it. But I had to get this guy out of the picture somehow. Physical harm would just land me in jail, and that wasn’t an option. So, I thought of the next best thing: follow her and be with her. I knew she had a festival coming up at her job, and I planned to be there. I know it’s childish and pathetic, but I was desperate to get things back together, especially since Keema had started threatening to expose everything. Damn, I really messed up.We sat in the parking lot for a moment before pulling off. During that time I checked my phone to see if I had any notifications from Kacie. Nothing. Of course she didn’t respond. She’s been acting weird as hell since she left. What got me was the fact that I told her she could’ve stayed. She insisted on leaving and creating this gap that didn’t have to exist. “Alright then sour patch, let’s go figure this out.” Now that I have Kayla with me, there was no way I was going back to work. I called my secretary and let her know I’d be working from home tomorrow and that I wasn’t returning to the office today either. This seemed like the perfect time to bond with Kayla like she’d been asking to do. We rode for twenty minutes before she finally realized we weren’t heading anywhere familiar to her. “Where are we going uncle?” “It’s a surprise.” I said with a grin on my face. Another thirty minutes and a playlist of Kayla’s favorite songs later, we were pulling into the par
*ERIC* “And why should we work with you?” “I’m glad you asked.” The man in the suit said as he opened his computer to show us the presentation he’d put together. This meeting was in the works for weeks as we tried to find the time to get together and discuss some things. From the looks of it, this guy was just reciting what someone else had put together for him. When certain questions were asked he’d either refer to something he previously said to make it sound good or he’d quickly skim through his notes. Things like that don’t usually go unnoticed around here and so far, this guy may just be leaving empty handed. While trying to focus on what this guy was saying, my phone vibrated in my pocket. In my mind I thought it was just a spam call or someone calling about an extended warranty I never knew existed. Each time my phone vibrated I let it go to voicemail. By the fourth back-to-back call, I leaned over and whispered to my project manager that I’d be back. She nodd
*AYANA* After a long day of taking X-rays, smelling breath, and passing out spit cups, I was ready to go home and sit my ass in some water with a nice glass of wine while I debate on what to do about my personal life. The last patient for the day just left, leaving me and Trish to lock up. After cleaning the office and the bathrooms, we set out unopened instruments for the next day. Trish was cool, but it was always this unchecked, uneasy energy about her. It was the kind that made you look back during a trust fall. Honestly I wouldn’t trust her ass to get me a cup of water. One time I was helping out at the front desk and this eerie feeling of someone watching me kept coming back out of nowhere. When scanning the room, she just stood there staring. Her gaze was unyielding and unsettling. She wanted me to see her, see me. I can’t get with that. Another time she had switched lunch times with me and when the boss came yelling at me, she just sat there and told this man that
*CHRIS* I’ve been calling Mira a lot lately. After the conversation with my dad, I realized that I had to get her back. It’s not like I was going to let her go without a fight to begin with, but something about his words that really hit hard for me. ‘When you have a good girl, you do everything you can to keep ‘em.’ That’s all I could think about. Don’t get me wrong it’s not like I wanted to. Deep down, I knew this was my fault. Had I kept it in my pants I’m sure we’d still be in the townhouse together. But also, had it not been for that crunchy bitch Ayana, she would’ve never met that motherfucker at the club. I still want to know what he said to get her attention. She didn’t come back home with me until about four months into us dating. One night is all it took for this bastard to get in her panties. I couldn’t tell you what pissed me off more. The fact that it was sudden, the fact that she actually likes him, the fact that she kept going back, or the fact that she’s actuall
*ERIC* After Jamira showed up, I can’t lie, I felt better about all the stuff that’s been going on lately. She stayed a while to talk and help with filing a few things for me. I actually like having her here. She’s really helpful. After going through a few cases and finishing up on two of them, I decided I needed a break. I went to go to Walt’s office. Once I got to the door, Dina, yet again was all in Walt’s face. She was sitting on the armrest of his chair with her hand on his chest. Seriously, what do these two do all day? “Dina, leave!” She hesitated and looked between us before running out of his office. Walt threw his hands up and grunted. “Why?” “Dina’s not worth the distraction.” Walt just stared at me a few seconds before returning back to work. “Hey, so I was wondering how Kacie was settling into her new place?” He paused. “Wouldn’t know anything about it.” “How was she when you helped her move the last of it?” “Fine.” “I called and she tri
*JAMIRA* Ayana and I talked and laughed as she recounted the events from her date and everything that happened afterwards. That girl still hadn’t changed. “Okay, but why didn’t you call me? I would’ve picked you up.” “Girl you too busy playing house with that man all up in your business.” “You see where that got me.” We both laughed. “Speaking of that, how’s the baby?” “He’s fine. I’m just ready for him to come already.” “Just hang in there girl.” I smiled. It’s amazing how a simple phrase can make you feel better than you did before. Even though I was happy to be talking to Ayana, my mind stayed on Eric. Ever since Kacie left he’s been down in the dumps. I thought if I surprised him at work, he’d feel at least a little better. Then Walt was acting strange like he didn’t want to be bothered. Eric would never say it, but I could tell he felt that the whole interaction was…off. “Hello, hello?” Her voice pulled me away from my thoughts. For a moment I’d fo
