“Uh, uh, girl, that’s the third time today,” Ayana said, rubbing my back and holding my hair as I violently vomited.

I slid down beside the toilet, wiping sweat off my forehead, trying to muster the strength to get up and wash away the disgusting taste in my mouth.

“I just need some electrolytes and some rest.”

“No, girl, you need to pee on a stick.”

“There’s no way. He used a condom every time.”

“Condoms break, Mira. I really think you should take a test to at least rule it out.”

“The only way I’m taking one is if you do it with me.”

“You’re so childish,” she said, rolling her eyes.

“You think I don’t know about Jeremy?”

“Mira, you’re in my business?”

“You damn right. You’ve been so secretive these days and smiling a little too hard at your phone when his name pops up.”

“Okay, but I’m grown.”

“No, you’re busted.”

She reached out to help me onto the edge of the bathtub. There, I found some relief from the cool wall against my head. I had vomited so much that my vision was getting blurry. Ayana walked over and placed a cool, damp washcloth on my forehead. That felt like love. I definitely needed that.

She reached under the sink and dug deep in the back and pulled out two pregnancy tests.

“Uh, uh, girl, where the hell did you get those from?”

“Look, when you’re outside as much as I am, you gotta be prepared,” she laughed.

“How long have you had these?”

“These are actually recent. I’ve noticed you were getting up in the middle of the night to vomit, so I got these last week.”

I wanted to protest, but I couldn’t. So instead, I opened the test and read the instructions. I didn’t care that Ayana was still there or that she’d probably yell at me for undressing in front of her, but none of that mattered. I needed to rule this out now.

I followed the instructions and placed the test flat on the sink.

“Your turn,” I said, as if I was challenging her.

She pushed me out of the bathroom to use hers. It took only fifteen seconds for her to open the door, and by then, I was feeling lightheaded. She set a timer for three minutes.

We sat there for what felt like the longest, most agonizing three minutes of my life. As we sat, she ran her fingers through my hair.

“So, when your test comes back positive, what are you going to do?”

“If… and that’s a big if… I’ll just have to bite the bullet and have a very real conversation.”

“Does that mean you’re going to be in a relationship with him?”

“I don’t know. I know he’ll want to, but how do I know if it’s for the best?”

“You’ll never know unless you try. Besides, he’s not a bad guy, Mira.”

“I know. I just don’t want to rush things, you know?”

“Girl, shut up! You’re pregnant, and you slept with him the first night you met. If that’s not rushing things, I don’t know what is.”

“We were having fun. This would mean a commitment, and that’s different.”

Just then, the timer went off. I jumped out of instinct, not ready to face the reality that I might be pregnant. We hadn’t even talked about having children, let alone having children.

She picked up hers and started screaming and yelling with excitement. Hers came back negative.

I went to pick up mine, and to my horror, a deep pink plus sign stared back at me.

I put the test down, tears streaming down my face. I mean, yeah, it’s not like I was trying to prevent it, but I wasn’t trying to have one either. I shook my head in denial.

“Give me another one,” I demanded.

Ayana reached under the sink and pulled out another one. This time, I didn’t have to wait the full three minutes. The plus sign appeared almost immediately. I sat there, rummaging through my thoughts, trying to figure out when this could have happened. I wasn’t upset or sad; I just knew my life was going to change forever.

“Are you going to keep it?”

“Yana, I don’t know,” I said, staring blankly into the air.

“You don’t have to tell him today if you don’t want to, but you definitely need to tell him sooner than later.”

I didn’t say anything in response. I was still processing what parenthood would even look like for two people who were still learning each other.

We sat in the parking lot for a moment before pulling off. During that time I checked my phone to see if I had any notifications from Kacie. Nothing. Of course she didn’t respond. She’s been acting weird as hell since she left. What got me was the fact that I told her she could’ve stayed. She insisted on leaving and creating this gap that didn’t have to exist. “Alright then sour patch, let’s go figure this out.” Now that I have Kayla with me, there was no way I was going back to work. I called my secretary and let her know I’d be working from home tomorrow and that I wasn’t returning to the office today either. This seemed like the perfect time to bond with Kayla like she’d been asking to do. We rode for twenty minutes before she finally realized we weren’t heading anywhere familiar to her. “Where are we going uncle?” “It’s a surprise.” I said with a grin on my face. Another thirty minutes and a playlist of Kayla’s favorite songs later, we were pulling into the par

*ERIC* “And why should we work with you?” “I’m glad you asked.” The man in the suit said as he opened his computer to show us the presentation he’d put together. This meeting was in the works for weeks as we tried to find the time to get together and discuss some things. From the looks of it, this guy was just reciting what someone else had put together for him. When certain questions were asked he’d either refer to something he previously said to make it sound good or he’d quickly skim through his notes. Things like that don’t usually go unnoticed around here and so far, this guy may just be leaving empty handed. While trying to focus on what this guy was saying, my phone vibrated in my pocket. In my mind I thought it was just a spam call or someone calling about an extended warranty I never knew existed. Each time my phone vibrated I let it go to voicemail. By the fourth back-to-back call, I leaned over and whispered to my project manager that I’d be back. She nodd

  • Love On Ice   The Last Safe Place

*AYANA* After a long day of taking X-rays, smelling breath, and passing out spit cups, I was ready to go home and sit my ass in some water with a nice glass of wine while I debate on what to do about my personal life. The last patient for the day just left, leaving me and Trish to lock up. After cleaning the office and the bathrooms, we set out unopened instruments for the next day. Trish was cool, but it was always this unchecked, uneasy energy about her. It was the kind that made you look back during a trust fall. Honestly I wouldn’t trust her ass to get me a cup of water. One time I was helping out at the front desk and this eerie feeling of someone watching me kept coming back out of nowhere. When scanning the room, she just stood there staring. Her gaze was unyielding and unsettling. She wanted me to see her, see me. I can’t get with that. Another time she had switched lunch times with me and when the boss came yelling at me, she just sat there and told this man that

  • Love On Ice   Late At Night

*CHRIS* I’ve been calling Mira a lot lately. After the conversation with my dad, I realized that I had to get her back. It’s not like I was going to let her go without a fight to begin with, but something about his words that really hit hard for me. ‘When you have a good girl, you do everything you can to keep ‘em.’ That’s all I could think about. Don’t get me wrong it’s not like I wanted to. Deep down, I knew this was my fault. Had I kept it in my pants I’m sure we’d still be in the townhouse together. But also, had it not been for that crunchy bitch Ayana, she would’ve never met that motherfucker at the club. I still want to know what he said to get her attention. She didn’t come back home with me until about four months into us dating. One night is all it took for this bastard to get in her panties. I couldn’t tell you what pissed me off more. The fact that it was sudden, the fact that she actually likes him, the fact that she kept going back, or the fact that she’s actuall

  • Love On Ice   Suspicion

*ERIC* After Jamira showed up, I can’t lie, I felt better about all the stuff that’s been going on lately. She stayed a while to talk and help with filing a few things for me. I actually like having her here. She’s really helpful. After going through a few cases and finishing up on two of them, I decided I needed a break. I went to go to Walt’s office. Once I got to the door, Dina, yet again was all in Walt’s face. She was sitting on the armrest of his chair with her hand on his chest. Seriously, what do these two do all day? “Dina, leave!” She hesitated and looked between us before running out of his office. Walt threw his hands up and grunted. “Why?” “Dina’s not worth the distraction.” Walt just stared at me a few seconds before returning back to work. “Hey, so I was wondering how Kacie was settling into her new place?” He paused. “Wouldn’t know anything about it.” “How was she when you helped her move the last of it?” “Fine.” “I called and she tri

*JAMIRA* Ayana and I talked and laughed as she recounted the events from her date and everything that happened afterwards. That girl still hadn’t changed. “Okay, but why didn’t you call me? I would’ve picked you up.” “Girl you too busy playing house with that man all up in your business.” “You see where that got me.” We both laughed. “Speaking of that, how’s the baby?” “He’s fine. I’m just ready for him to come already.” “Just hang in there girl.” I smiled. It’s amazing how a simple phrase can make you feel better than you did before. Even though I was happy to be talking to Ayana, my mind stayed on Eric. Ever since Kacie left he’s been down in the dumps. I thought if I surprised him at work, he’d feel at least a little better. Then Walt was acting strange like he didn’t want to be bothered. Eric would never say it, but I could tell he felt that the whole interaction was…off. “Hello, hello?” Her voice pulled me away from my thoughts. For a moment I’d fo
