“What the fuck is that, Jamira?” I exclaimed, my voice filled with anger.

“What is what?” she replied, shifting in her seat to prevent me from getting a good look at her neck.

My hands moved faster than my mind, and twice as fast as my mouth. I swiftly yanked at the string, loosening the jacket, and pulled back the hood, exposing her neck with purple marks on it.

The sight made my blood boil. My jaw clenched, and my fists balled as I punched the steering wheel.

I turned to her, and she looked completely terrified.

“Did he do this?”

She looked away, as if she didn’t want to answer.

I pulled the jacket completely off of her. Bruises on her arm, the same color as the ones on her neck, that told me they had happened around the same time. Then, I noticed something red at the bottom of her neck, just below her hair. I turned her around and saw red dots scattered across it.

I lifted the back of her shirt. She wiggled, but she wasn’t fast enough. What I saw made me want to kill someone today.

There were scratches of all sorts—some long, some short, some deeper than others. I touched the skin very close to one, and she flinched. These were very fresh.

“Oh my sweet girl, I’m so sorry.”

She cried as I held her.

“Is this why you’ve been ignoring me?”

She simply nodded.

“I was afraid to tell you. I didn’t want you involved,” she said sadly.

“Baby, don’t ever leave me out like that.”

She nodded again. I lifted her chin to plant a kiss on her lips, and I saw that her face had been healing too.

“The fuck happened, Jamira,” I asked this time, yelling.

She just stared at me with tears in her eyes. That broke my heart. I couldn’t do anything but hold her and rub her head.

“Don’t worry about it, baby,” I reassured her.

I was so angry that I began to devise another plan.

“Go get your friend.”

“What?” she asked, confused.

“Go get her, or I will. Since you don’t want to tell me what happened, maybe she will.”

She slowly got out and went to get her. Five minutes later, she showed up with her friend by her side.

She approached me. She was a petite woman with braids, striking brown eyes, and sun-kissed skin reminiscent of Jamira. Despite being slightly taller than her by a few inches, her attitude was quite off-putting.

“Is there a reason you had her get me?”

I could sense her feisty nature, and most guys would have backed down. However, I wasn’t built like that, especially for Jamira. I needed to uncover the truth.

“What the hell happened to her?”

“What did she tell you?”

“Would you be here if she did?”

“Well, I don’t know what to tell you.”

“I don’t have time for this. Unless you want this situation to escalate, tell me what the hell happened to her.”

She stared at me for a moment before responding, “What are you going to do?”

Frustrated, I retorted, “Does it matter? Do you want this situation handled or not?”

She stared again and finally began to speak.

She didn’t reveal everything, but she did provide the crucial information I needed. The rest, I could figure out on my own. I expressed my gratitude, and as she left, I heard her exclaim to Jamira, “Ooh, girl, I like him.” I couldn’t deny that made me smile a little. I knew she cared about Jamira, and Jamira valued her opinion.

I drove off, heading back to the office. I lit a cigarette and reflected on what I had witnessed. The images of her body were etched into my mind, and I couldn’t help but feel a sense of anger and disbelief. She was in pain, and he had hurt her over a mere hickey! He was definitely a bitch.

Upon reaching the office, I went to find Walt. I found him in his office with his assistant. She was bent over his desk, flaunting her assets. I approached her, handed her some papers, and dismissed her.

“Dina, get out and file these.”

She appeared confused but quickly composed herself and scurried out.

“Damn,” Walt exclaimed in shock.

“I went to see Jamira.”

“Okay… what am I supposed to do with that?”

“Nothing, listen. She has bruises on her, and I know it was her weak boyfriend.”

“Whoa, are you sure?”

“Yeah, her friend told me. I doubt she’d lie about that.”

“Wait ..have you been smoking?”

“Oh my god, Walt I’m stressed. Find out everything you can on his ass!”

“Yeah, right, of course. I just need a name.”

“His name is Chris. He works at JC Plus Auto Repair.”

“Oh yeah I’ve been there. Pretty good prices.”

“Walt?!”

“Yeah, yeah got it. But I could take you by there if you want.”

He actually made sense. “Yeah go by there and scope the place out. I still need to know what you can find.”

I was more than determined at this point. All I could do was think about getting my hands on that asshole.

We sat in the parking lot for a moment before pulling off. During that time I checked my phone to see if I had any notifications from Kacie. Nothing. Of course she didn’t respond. She’s been acting weird as hell since she left. What got me was the fact that I told her she could’ve stayed. She insisted on leaving and creating this gap that didn’t have to exist. “Alright then sour patch, let’s go figure this out.” Now that I have Kayla with me, there was no way I was going back to work. I called my secretary and let her know I’d be working from home tomorrow and that I wasn’t returning to the office today either. This seemed like the perfect time to bond with Kayla like she’d been asking to do. We rode for twenty minutes before she finally realized we weren’t heading anywhere familiar to her. “Where are we going uncle?” “It’s a surprise.” I said with a grin on my face. Another thirty minutes and a playlist of Kayla’s favorite songs later, we were pulling into the par

  • Love On Ice   Through Her Eyes

*ERIC* “And why should we work with you?” “I’m glad you asked.” The man in the suit said as he opened his computer to show us the presentation he’d put together. This meeting was in the works for weeks as we tried to find the time to get together and discuss some things. From the looks of it, this guy was just reciting what someone else had put together for him. When certain questions were asked he’d either refer to something he previously said to make it sound good or he’d quickly skim through his notes. Things like that don’t usually go unnoticed around here and so far, this guy may just be leaving empty handed. While trying to focus on what this guy was saying, my phone vibrated in my pocket. In my mind I thought it was just a spam call or someone calling about an extended warranty I never knew existed. Each time my phone vibrated I let it go to voicemail. By the fourth back-to-back call, I leaned over and whispered to my project manager that I’d be back. She nodd

  • Love On Ice   The Last Safe Place

*AYANA* After a long day of taking X-rays, smelling breath, and passing out spit cups, I was ready to go home and sit my ass in some water with a nice glass of wine while I debate on what to do about my personal life. The last patient for the day just left, leaving me and Trish to lock up. After cleaning the office and the bathrooms, we set out unopened instruments for the next day. Trish was cool, but it was always this unchecked, uneasy energy about her. It was the kind that made you look back during a trust fall. Honestly I wouldn’t trust her ass to get me a cup of water. One time I was helping out at the front desk and this eerie feeling of someone watching me kept coming back out of nowhere. When scanning the room, she just stood there staring. Her gaze was unyielding and unsettling. She wanted me to see her, see me. I can’t get with that. Another time she had switched lunch times with me and when the boss came yelling at me, she just sat there and told this man that

  • Love On Ice   Late At Night

*CHRIS* I’ve been calling Mira a lot lately. After the conversation with my dad, I realized that I had to get her back. It’s not like I was going to let her go without a fight to begin with, but something about his words that really hit hard for me. ‘When you have a good girl, you do everything you can to keep ‘em.’ That’s all I could think about. Don’t get me wrong it’s not like I wanted to. Deep down, I knew this was my fault. Had I kept it in my pants I’m sure we’d still be in the townhouse together. But also, had it not been for that crunchy bitch Ayana, she would’ve never met that motherfucker at the club. I still want to know what he said to get her attention. She didn’t come back home with me until about four months into us dating. One night is all it took for this bastard to get in her panties. I couldn’t tell you what pissed me off more. The fact that it was sudden, the fact that she actually likes him, the fact that she kept going back, or the fact that she’s actuall

*ERIC* After Jamira showed up, I can’t lie, I felt better about all the stuff that’s been going on lately. She stayed a while to talk and help with filing a few things for me. I actually like having her here. She’s really helpful. After going through a few cases and finishing up on two of them, I decided I needed a break. I went to go to Walt’s office. Once I got to the door, Dina, yet again was all in Walt’s face. She was sitting on the armrest of his chair with her hand on his chest. Seriously, what do these two do all day? “Dina, leave!” She hesitated and looked between us before running out of his office. Walt threw his hands up and grunted. “Why?” “Dina’s not worth the distraction.” Walt just stared at me a few seconds before returning back to work. “Hey, so I was wondering how Kacie was settling into her new place?” He paused. “Wouldn’t know anything about it.” “How was she when you helped her move the last of it?” “Fine.” “I called and she tri

  • Love On Ice   Spooked

*JAMIRA* Ayana and I talked and laughed as she recounted the events from her date and everything that happened afterwards. That girl still hadn’t changed. “Okay, but why didn’t you call me? I would’ve picked you up.” “Girl you too busy playing house with that man all up in your business.” “You see where that got me.” We both laughed. “Speaking of that, how’s the baby?” “He’s fine. I’m just ready for him to come already.” “Just hang in there girl.” I smiled. It’s amazing how a simple phrase can make you feel better than you did before. Even though I was happy to be talking to Ayana, my mind stayed on Eric. Ever since Kacie left he’s been down in the dumps. I thought if I surprised him at work, he’d feel at least a little better. Then Walt was acting strange like he didn’t want to be bothered. Eric would never say it, but I could tell he felt that the whole interaction was…off. “Hello, hello?” Her voice pulled me away from my thoughts. For a moment I’d fo
