Ever since my sister and niece moved in, I’ve been constantly on the move. I was never the type to stay still, but I did have the luxury of relaxation when I wanted. Now, it’s just motion in every direction. I was exhausted. On top of that, things have been picking up at the office. There are more meetings, more projects, and my mom breathing down my neck about my personal life. When my dad stepped down from his accounting firm, he handed me the reins to take over. I always wondered why he didn’t offer it to Kacie first, since she was the oldest and had actually shadowed him from the beginning. When I asked, he would always say she wasn’t interested in that kind of stuff and that she’d probably just marry well and wouldn’t want it. I think he just didn’t see her as being capable in some way. Worked out for me, so I couldn’t complain. There was a knock on the door that pulled me away from my work. “Come in.” It was my best friend and partner, Walton. He’d always been there to help run the show when I was away or when things had suddenly come up. He was really good at his job. “You’ve been couped up in this office for days. When are you going to get out and get some air or something?” I laughed at the idea of me being a shut-in. “You see all this work on my desk? I can’t get behind on it.” “That’s what you got employees for, E. They are more than capable of helping take the load.” “Walt, what do you want?” He smirked at the question. “Glad you asked. So, it’s this party—black tie that’s going on tonight, and I thought it’d be nice if you came.” I groaned at this because I knew exactly who sent him to do this. “She put you up to this?” “I have no idea what you’re talking about. You just need to have some fun since you’ve been slammed with work.” For a moment, I considered it, but I shook the idea off quickly. I didn’t want to be bothered with big events like that. It was always full of people who weren’t in the least bit interested in you, just what you did. “Should I tell her no?” That question halted me in my tracks. Curiosity always got the better of me, and he knew that. “Who?” Walt pulled out his phone and showed me a picture of a woman who was absolutely stunning. She had long brown hair, captivating blue eyes that drew you in like sirens do to fishermen, and an undeniable smile. “Are you going to tell me that you don’t want to see her?” I rubbed my hand through my hair, contemplating for a moment before responding, “I mean, she’s attractive, but I think I’ll pass. Why don’t you take one for the team?” He seemed taken aback by my response and looked at me for a moment, as if searching for something. “Alright, what’s going on? You’ve never turned down a beauty like that before, are you sick?” he said, reaching to place a hand on my forehead. We both laughed. “No, I’m fine. Just busy.” I picked up my pen to resume work, but the conversation continued. “Who is she?” “Who’s who, Walt?” “The girl that’s got you turning down other girls you’d normally go for?” “I don’t know what you’re talking about.” I did. I just didn’t want to admit it and tell him he was right. I didn’t want the jokes or the pressure of telling my family and friends that I’m interested in someone. It always became a big spectacle, like we were kids. But Walt was always on to me. It was as if he knew my innermost thoughts. It was actually creepy. “Tell me, playboy.” Just then, my thoughts shifted to Jamira. As if I hadn’t thought about her enough already. I didn’t even know where I stood with her, and it was extremely fresh, so no way was I going to talk about it. So, I did the only thing I thought to throw him off. I lied. “Alright, you got me. I met this cute girl a while back, and we’ve been getting pretty serious over the last few weeks. I think she’s special.” His eyes widened like a schoolgirl. It was hilarious, so I kept going. “Her name is Amanda, and we met at a coffee shop one day. It kind of went from there.” “When were you going to say something?” “When I sent out wedding invitations”, I laughed. Walt thought for a moment. His eyes widened again as if he realized something and became flushed. His face was as red as a cherry. “You dumbass, that’s the plot of that show Tokyo Bridge.” It was, but in my defense, I didn’t expect him to catch on as quickly. We both laughed as he walked out of my office. I guess he had enough. I tried to get back to work, but my mind was stuck on Jamira. It’s been a few days since I’ve dropped Kayla off at school or picked her up. Her mom had told me she was able to adjust her schedule so I wouldn’t be solely responsible for that. Plus, I think she just missed being there for her in the morning. I had remembered texting her last night about making things up to her. I wonder if it’s too soon after. I just want to see her and take up some of her time. Hopefully, I can get her next to me again. I pulled out my phone and texted my sister. Hey.. Hey, loser. What time does Kayla get out of school? 3 p.m., why? Perfect, I’ll be picking her up from school today. Are you sure? Yeah, it’ll give you a chance to fix that rat’s nest on your head. Ha ha, very funny, LITTLE bro. I laughed and put the phone down. Satisfied my plan worked, I got back to work so I could finish as much as I could before it was time to leave. By the time 2:30 hit, most of it was done. Not too shabby, I might add. I grabbed my jacket off the chair and left for the day.We sat in the parking lot for a moment before pulling off. During that time I checked my phone to see if I had any notifications from Kacie. Nothing. Of course she didn’t respond. She’s been acting weird as hell since she left. What got me was the fact that I told her she could’ve stayed. She insisted on leaving and creating this gap that didn’t have to exist. “Alright then sour patch, let’s go figure this out.” Now that I have Kayla with me, there was no way I was going back to work. I called my secretary and let her know I’d be working from home tomorrow and that I wasn’t returning to the office today either. This seemed like the perfect time to bond with Kayla like she’d been asking to do. We rode for twenty minutes before she finally realized we weren’t heading anywhere familiar to her. “Where are we going uncle?” “It’s a surprise.” I said with a grin on my face. Another thirty minutes and a playlist of Kayla’s favorite songs later, we were pulling into the par
*ERIC* “And why should we work with you?” “I’m glad you asked.” The man in the suit said as he opened his computer to show us the presentation he’d put together. This meeting was in the works for weeks as we tried to find the time to get together and discuss some things. From the looks of it, this guy was just reciting what someone else had put together for him. When certain questions were asked he’d either refer to something he previously said to make it sound good or he’d quickly skim through his notes. Things like that don’t usually go unnoticed around here and so far, this guy may just be leaving empty handed. While trying to focus on what this guy was saying, my phone vibrated in my pocket. In my mind I thought it was just a spam call or someone calling about an extended warranty I never knew existed. Each time my phone vibrated I let it go to voicemail. By the fourth back-to-back call, I leaned over and whispered to my project manager that I’d be back. She nodd
*AYANA* After a long day of taking X-rays, smelling breath, and passing out spit cups, I was ready to go home and sit my ass in some water with a nice glass of wine while I debate on what to do about my personal life. The last patient for the day just left, leaving me and Trish to lock up. After cleaning the office and the bathrooms, we set out unopened instruments for the next day. Trish was cool, but it was always this unchecked, uneasy energy about her. It was the kind that made you look back during a trust fall. Honestly I wouldn’t trust her ass to get me a cup of water. One time I was helping out at the front desk and this eerie feeling of someone watching me kept coming back out of nowhere. When scanning the room, she just stood there staring. Her gaze was unyielding and unsettling. She wanted me to see her, see me. I can’t get with that. Another time she had switched lunch times with me and when the boss came yelling at me, she just sat there and told this man that
*CHRIS* I’ve been calling Mira a lot lately. After the conversation with my dad, I realized that I had to get her back. It’s not like I was going to let her go without a fight to begin with, but something about his words that really hit hard for me. ‘When you have a good girl, you do everything you can to keep ‘em.’ That’s all I could think about. Don’t get me wrong it’s not like I wanted to. Deep down, I knew this was my fault. Had I kept it in my pants I’m sure we’d still be in the townhouse together. But also, had it not been for that crunchy bitch Ayana, she would’ve never met that motherfucker at the club. I still want to know what he said to get her attention. She didn’t come back home with me until about four months into us dating. One night is all it took for this bastard to get in her panties. I couldn’t tell you what pissed me off more. The fact that it was sudden, the fact that she actually likes him, the fact that she kept going back, or the fact that she’s actuall
*ERIC* After Jamira showed up, I can’t lie, I felt better about all the stuff that’s been going on lately. She stayed a while to talk and help with filing a few things for me. I actually like having her here. She’s really helpful. After going through a few cases and finishing up on two of them, I decided I needed a break. I went to go to Walt’s office. Once I got to the door, Dina, yet again was all in Walt’s face. She was sitting on the armrest of his chair with her hand on his chest. Seriously, what do these two do all day? “Dina, leave!” She hesitated and looked between us before running out of his office. Walt threw his hands up and grunted. “Why?” “Dina’s not worth the distraction.” Walt just stared at me a few seconds before returning back to work. “Hey, so I was wondering how Kacie was settling into her new place?” He paused. “Wouldn’t know anything about it.” “How was she when you helped her move the last of it?” “Fine.” “I called and she tri
*JAMIRA* Ayana and I talked and laughed as she recounted the events from her date and everything that happened afterwards. That girl still hadn’t changed. “Okay, but why didn’t you call me? I would’ve picked you up.” “Girl you too busy playing house with that man all up in your business.” “You see where that got me.” We both laughed. “Speaking of that, how’s the baby?” “He’s fine. I’m just ready for him to come already.” “Just hang in there girl.” I smiled. It’s amazing how a simple phrase can make you feel better than you did before. Even though I was happy to be talking to Ayana, my mind stayed on Eric. Ever since Kacie left he’s been down in the dumps. I thought if I surprised him at work, he’d feel at least a little better. Then Walt was acting strange like he didn’t want to be bothered. Eric would never say it, but I could tell he felt that the whole interaction was…off. “Hello, hello?” Her voice pulled me away from my thoughts. For a moment I’d fo
