Falling in love? Nowhere on the agenda. Enter Kai Rowan. Kai is the ultimate wildcard—easygoing, unapologetically quiet, and perfectly content figuring out life as it comes. When a high-stakes school project forces the hyper-ambitious Sienna to co-lead alongside the frustratingly laid-back Kai, her pristine world starts to unravel. At first, Sienna can’t stand Kai’s slow-paced perspective, while Kai finds Sienna’s relentless hustle completely exhausting. Kai teaches Sienna how to breathe between deadlines; Sienna inspires Kai to want something worth fighting for. What begins as reluctant teamwork quickly spiraling into a deep, electric young romance. Kai becomes her safe harbor, and Sienna becomes his spark. But as graduation looms, the harsh light of reality settles in. Sienna’s ambitious dreams require moving halfway across the country, while Kai’s path keeps him rooted right where he is. PROLOGUE: The Pencil Case Standard

Sienna's POV

The kitchen clock had a quiet, relentless tick that felt less like time passing and more like a deadline approaching. It was 11:14 PM on the Sunday before fifth grade, and ten-year-old Sienna Vance was still awake at the dining room table, surrounded by plastic containers, index cards, and a fresh pack of Crayola markers.

Her mother had already come downstairs twice in her worn flannel robe, standing in the doorway with that gentle, tired look she always got when Sienna was getting "too focused."

"Sweetheart, everything is packed. You’re going to be late on your very first day if you don't sleep," her mother had said, pressing a quick kiss into Sienna’s hair.

"I just need two more minutes, Mom," Sienna had lied.

Two minutes wasn't enough to guarantee safety. Two minutes didn't account for what might happen if Mr. Henderson asked for a blue colored pencil and she only had light blue and dark navy. It didn't cover the catastrophe of a broken lead during a timed math drill, or a ripped folder pocket during cubby assignments.

Sienna’s fingers worked with practiced rhythm. Pens on the far left, sorted by ink color: black, blue, red for corrections. Highlighters in the middle compartment, turned so their brand logos all faced upward. Erasers—the clean pink wedges that hadn't met paper yet—aligned in the bottom tray like tiny rectangular bricks.

To anyone else, it was just school supplies. To Sienna, it was armor. She had learned early on that the world was noisy, unpredictable, and prone to sudden shifts. Adults forgot things. Schedules changed. Storms blew out the power. But a fully stocked, color-coded pencil case meant that whatever small piece of the world was in front of her remained completely under her control.

She took a slow, deep breath, pressing the plastic latch shut until it gave a satisfying, firm snap. She let her hands rest on the smooth lid, feeling her chest unclenching just a fraction. Everything was set. Her backpack was zipped, her clothes for the next morning were laid out on her chair in exact order from socks to hair tie, and her notebook was blank, waiting for instructions.

Then came the rustle of socks on hardwood.

Her seven-year-old brother, Leo, came tumbling into the kitchen in his oversized dinosaur pajamas, chasing a stray rubber bouncy ball he’d lost under the couch. He wasn't looking. He was just a blur of small knees and chaotic energy.

His elbow caught the edge of the open tray.

Time seemed to slow down as the clear plastic container tipped. In a brutal, deafening cascade, three weeks of preparation exploded across the floor. Markers rolled into the dark gap beneath the refrigerator. Pink erasers bounced toward the hallway. A bottle of Elmer's glue hit the baseboard with a heavy thud, its cap popping off and spilling a thick, white puddle across the dark wood flooring.

Leo stopped dead in his tracks, his eyes going wide as he looked at the mess, then at his sister. "I'm sorry, Sisi," he whispered, pulling his hands into his sleeves. "It was an accident."

Sienna didn't yell. She didn't cry. Instead, a terrifying, icy stillness washed over her. Her hands hovered in the air where the tray had been just a second ago. Her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird, and for three long seconds, she couldn't breathe. The neat, predictable world she had built over the past three hours was gone, replaced by chaos on a kitchen floor.

"Sienna?" Leo asked softly, taking a step back.

"It’s fine," Sienna said, her voice sounding flat, almost hollow to her own ears. "Go back to bed, Leo."

"Are you mad?"

"No. Just go to bed."

Once his bedroom door clicked shut upstairs, Sienna dropped to her knees on the cold floor. She didn't wipe away the glue right away, even though it was seeping into the grain of the wood. Instead, she began gathering the scattered pens, one by one.

Her fingers were shaking. She picked up a yellow highlighter from under the table, checking the tip to make sure it hadn't flattened. She crawled under the lower cabinet to retrieve a black gel pen, uncapping it to test the ink on her palm. A thin blue line ran across the back of her hand, bright and permanent.

It took her forty-five minutes to clean the floor and re-sort every single piece. By the time she finished wiping down the glue, her knees were bruised and her fingers smelled like synthetic adhesive and graphite.

She sat back on her heels, staring at the closed pencil box. It looked identical to how it had looked an hour ago. But the quiet comfort was gone. The illusion had cracked. She realized then that simply preparing wasn't enough—you had to prepare harder. You had to anticipate the elbow, the brother, the sudden breeze, the unseen flaw in the plan.

Sienna pulled her small spiral notebook from her bag, flipped to the very last page, and uncapped her black gel pen. In neat, crisp print, she wrote at the top of the page:

Rule 1: Always stay three steps ahead. Never leave a margin for error.

She closed the book, locked the latch on her pencil case one last time, and finally went to bed, ready to fight the morning.
