The Vale estate looked the same.

That was the first thing Lucien noticed when the car turned through the gates, the way the house sat at the top of the drive exactly as it always had.

He had grown up in this house and left for Saint Aurelius and came back for holidays and left again and the house had never once looked different regardless of what was happening inside it.

He had always found that either reassuring or unsettling depending on the year.

This year it was unsettling.

Rain lashed against the heavy glass walls of the living room, making a continuous, harsh rattling sound that drowned out almost everything else. Water pooled on the tiled floor around Thomas’s body, reflecting the low yellow glow of the kitchen recessed lights.Cassian was sitting on his knees on the floor in front of the coffee table, his fingers moving across his laptop trackpad. His shirt was still damp from helping drag Thomas inside, but he didn't seem to notice the cold fabric sticking to his skin. His attention was completely locked on the local system status screen.Noah stood three feet away, his arms folded tight across his chest, shifting his weight from one foot to the other. His eyes kept darting toward Thomas’s still face, then back to Cassian’s laptop."Cass," Noah said, his voice quiet. "Can you get a signal through to the resort at all? Even a low-frequency radio call?""I'm trying," Cassian said. His tone was flat, stripped of its usual warmth. "The satellite dish on

The private speedboat slowed down, its twin engines dropping from a high-pitched roar to a low, quiet hum as it glided into the shallow turquoise water of the private lagoon.Eli stood near the back of the boat, holding onto the smooth chrome railing with one hand. The salt spray caught on his skin, but his eyes were fixed entirely on the structure ahead. Built directly over the calm, crystal-clear water of a inland lake extension, Lucien’s house looked massive yet secluded. Wide wooden decks wrapped around dark glass walls, connected to a private boat dock by a long, raised plank boardwalk."It looks bigger than it did in the floor plans Cassian was obsessing over," Noah said, stepping up beside Eli with his duffel bag slung over his shoulder."Cassian’s floor plans didn't have thirty feet of clear ocean underneath them," Eli said, turning his head to see Lucien stepping out from the covered cabin of the boat.Lucien had already taken off his socks and shoes, rolling his linen trouse

"You couldn't just leave the extra charger in the car, could you?" Noah's voice echoed off the smooth glass walls of the private terminal as he walked through the sliding entrance doors. He had his duffel bag slung over one shoulder, his dark hair still slightly messy from waking up at five in the morning, but his face was bright with energy.Cassian stepped in right behind him, carrying a cardboard tray with two large iced coffees in one hand and his laptop bag slipping down his arm. "It wasn't an extra charger, Noah. It was the primary power supply for the encrypted storage drive. If I left that in the trunk of the car, we'd be sitting on an island in the middle of the Indian Ocean with forty percent battery and no local backup.""We're going to a beach estate, Cass," Noah said, shaking his head as he spotted Eli and Lucien standing near the center lounge seating. "The whole point is that we don't need backup."The moment Lucien saw Noah and Cassian, the last tiny trace of political

  • Loving Him For 30 Days   Chapter 109: Terminal

The early morning air at the private terminal was still cool when the dark town car pulled up to the curb. Through the tinted side window, Eli could see the glass doors of the terminal standing open, quiet and mostly empty. There were no flashing cameras, no reporters pushing microphones forward, and no crowds waiting near the entrance.Eli unbuckled his seatbelt, letting out a long, easy breath. He looked over at Lucien, who was sitting in the corner of the leather back seat, staring down at his dark blue tie."Are you going to take that off, or are you planning to wear a tie on the beach?" Eli asked, a slight smile on his face.Lucien looked up, his fingers pausing on the silk fabric. His shoulders were still held straight, his back rigid against the leather seat, exactly the way he sat during city council meetings or television interviews. "It’s force of habit. Marcus said there might be one staff member taking photos for the private charter records.""Lucien," Eli said gently, rea

The bedroom was dim, lit only by the soft glow of Cassian’s secondary monitor sitting on the small corner desk. Outside the window, the city was mostly quiet, the late-night traffic reduced to a faint, occasional hum.Cassian sat back in his office chair, wearing an oversized grey t-shirt and shorts. His glasses were pushed up onto the top of his head, resting in his messy hair. On the desk in front of him, three small black hard-shell cases lay open, neatly organized with custom-cut foam padding. Inside each case sat external solid-state drives, spare connection cables, a compact wireless router, and a portable satellite transceiver. He picked up a short black cable, coiled it neatly around two fingers, and tucked it into a dedicated slot in the smallest case.On the far side of the room, Noah shifted under the heavy white duvet on the king-sized bed. The blankets pulled tight around his shoulders as he turned onto his side, facing the desk. His eyes were half-closed, heavy with slee

Two dark leather suitcases sat lined up against the wall near the front entrance of the penthouse, their luggage tags dangling motionless. The apartment was exceptionally quiet. The usual hum of Lucien’s work laptops, the incoming email notifications, and the clatter of Eli’s prep bowls were entirely absent.Eli was leaning against the kitchen counter, holding two mugs of warm chamomile tea. He wore a soft, washed-out grey t-shirt and loose lounge pants. His hair was still damp from a late shower, falling slightly over his forehead.Lucien walked out of the bedroom, bare-chested under an unbuttoned flannel shirt, his hair tousled. He stopped at the edge of the kitchen, taking a long, deep breath. His posture had dropped all its usual political rigidity; his shoulders were lowered, and his hands were tucked into the pockets of his sweatpants."Everything is packed?" Eli asked, extending one of the mugs across the counter.Lucien walked over and took the mug, his fingers brushing agains
