Lucien told himself he was taking a different route.

The south path ran parallel to the athletics track and he used it sometimes when the east corridor was congested, which it was on Thursdays, which was why he was here, which had nothing to do with anything else. He told himself that, then he saw Eli and stopped walking.

The track was mostly empty at this hour, a few athletes at the far end, a coach with a clipboard, and Eli alone on the straight, just running, like really running.

Lucien hadn’t seen Eli run before, this was him without an audience, without the brightness he wore like a second jacket, without any performance.

Lucien stood at the edge of the path and watched him, he tried not to think much about the fact that he wasn't walking past like he planned to.

Eli ran two lengths before he slowed, hands on his knees, breathing hard. Then he straightened and looked up and found Lucien standing there, they just stared at each other across the distance.

Eli didn’t smile, he just looked, catching his breath, and waited after a while, Lucien crossed the grass toward the track boundary.

“You’re fast,” he said.

“I know.” Eli’s voice was even. “What are you doing here?”

“South path.”

“Right.” A pause. “South path.”Eli replied squinting his eyes slightly

Neither of them said anything, they just looked at each other and somewhere at the far end the other athletes were laughing about something, the sound carrying easily in the cold air.

“I said things,” Lucien said.

“In the council room. Things that were” he stopped. “Harder than they needed to be.”

“Yeah,” Eli said. “You did.”

“I’m not apologizing for the content.”

“I know.”

“Just the delivery.”

Eli looked at him for a long moment with those amber eyes that had a way of locating things Lucien didn’t leave out in the open.

Then something in his expression shifted, something looking indifferent but still practical.

“Okay,” Eli said.

“Okay.”

“You want to walk back or are you still taking the south path?” Eli said sarcastically.

Lucien looked at the south path, then at Eli.

“I’ll walk back,” he said.

Eli picked up his water bottle and jacket from the grass. When he straightened his dark curls were damp against his forehead, cheeks flushed from the cold and the running, and Lucien caught himself staring and told himself absolutely nothing.

They walked back toward campus in the comfortable silence. It was, Lucien thought, the most dangerous thing about Eli Thorne.

It was not the desserts or the shamelessness or the way he said true things without warning it was this.

The ease of being near him, it felt like putting something down that Lucien didn’t realise he’d been carrying. They were nearly at the junction when Eli spoke.

“The stuff getting posted,” Eli said, not looking at him. “About you and Adrian.”

Lucien said nothing.

“Are you trying to find out who’s behind it?”

“Yes.”

Eli nodded slowly, like he’d already suspected the answer. “Do you know yet?”

“I have a direction.”

“But not proof.”

“Not yet.”

They walked a few more steps, the junction came into view ahead, the path splitting toward Lion’s Den and Bee’s Hive.

“I got a message,” Lucien said, he wasn’t sure why he said it. “Unknown number. Told me to ask Adrian what he said to Mira Solene last Tuesday.”

Eli was quiet for a moment. “Are you going to?”

“When I know more.”

“And until then?”

“Until then I’ll just observe.” Lucien looked ahead.

“People who leak things always leak more than they intend to when they don’t get a desired reaction, you just have to wait.”

Eli absorbed this. “That’s smart,” he said simply, Lucien glanced at him.

He said it the way he said everything, like a fact he’d just noticed.

They reached the junction and Eli stopped and turned to face him with his water bottle still in his hand, and his jacket still over his arm.

“For what it’s worth,” Eli said. “Whatever they’re posting about you, doesn't change anything, not for me.”

Lucien looked at him.

“I know what kind of person you are,” Eli said.

He said it without weight, like it was simply true and he saw no reason not to say it. Then he turned toward the Bee’s Hive.

“Two o’clock tomorrow,” Lucien said.

Eli glanced back. “I’ll be there.” he walked away.

Lucien stood at the junction and watched him go, and he thought about the bet again, how it would destroy whatever it was he had here. He swallowed and stared at the path Eli took for a while.

He took out his phone, opened the unknown number’s message again.

“Ask Adrian what he told Mira Solene last Tuesday. Then ask him why”

He stared at it, then he typed one line back.

‘Who are you?’

Three dots appeared immediately.

Then stopped.

Then nothing.

Day eleven of thirty.

Nineteen to go.

The blue sedan roared down the highway bypass, its windshield wipers slapping violently against the glass as the city lights of Geneva blurred into long, watery streaks. Inside, the only illumination came from the screen of Cassian’s laptop, casting a cold blue glow over the four boys.Eli’s breathing was still shallow, his palm tightly sweating against the stolen digital drive. He stared at the dashboard, his mind racing to connect the pieces that Julian Vance had just thrown at them in the vault."It doesn't make sense," Eli said, his voice cutting through the hum of the heater. "Julian said Mira’s mother structured the settlement five years ago. If the Solene family was that deep in the Senator’s pocket, how did Mira get ahold of the proxy tokens? Why did Raphael have the key?"Lucien didn't look away from the road, his hands steady on the wheel despite the speed. "Because Mira and Raphael weren't working for the board, Eli. They were trying to build their own leverage."Cassian f

Lucien rose to his feet in a single, fluid motion, his wet sneakers making a faint, sticky sound against the linoleum. He didn't wipe the gray drainage water from his face. His green eyes were completely fixed on the sliver of light cutting through the open vault door at the end of the central lane. He reached down, his fingers catching the sleeve of Eli’s jacket to pull him up behind his shoulder as they moved silently toward the threshold.Every step down the narrow corridor felt weighted. Eli kept his breath shallow, his boots aligning perfectly with Lucien’s shadow to minimize the sound of their approach. The space narrowed as they neared the heavy steel casing of the vault entry, the illumination shifting from the dim yellow of the maintenance hall to a sharp, clinical brightness. The interior of the vault was wide, lined with reinforced steel cabinets and illuminated by a harsh, blue-tinted overhead light. The air smelled strongly of ozone and shredded paper. Rows of heavy

The side alley behind the Rue du Rhône financial pavilion was tight, shadowed by the concrete overhang of the main building and smelling heavily of wet stone and old iron. Rain dripped from the high drainage pipes in a steady, rhythmic slap against the asphalt.Lucien led the way toward the rear of the loading dock, his boots making no sound as he stopped in front of a heavy, rectangular iron grate set directly into the concrete foundation. The bars were thick, rusted red at the edges, and secured to the frame by four massive industrial bolts that had been sealed with thick grease to prevent water damage."This is the secondary intake," Lucien said, his voice dropping below the steady rumble of the building's central heating exhaust above them. He reached into his jacket pocket, pulling out a compact, adjustable steel wrench he had taken from the airfield locker. "The blueprint Cassian pulled shows this shaft drops six feet before it intersects with the main drainage line for the vau

The blue sedan slipped into the subterranean parking deck beneath the Rue du Rhône, its wet tires squealing softly against the smooth, painted concrete floor. Lucien drove all the way down to the lowest level, bypassing the brightly lit rows near the elevator banks until he found an unlit bay tucked behind a massive concrete support column. He killed the engine, but left the auxiliary power running so the dashboard screen didn't lose its connection to Cassian’s terminal."We stay split," Lucien said, shifting his weight to look back at the rear seat. "Cassian, you and Noah monitor the local precinct frequencies from here. If the building’s private security detail triggers a manual override on the vaults, I want to know before the central alarm hits the floor.""The encryption is holding," Cassian replied, his fingers flying across his laptop keys as the blue lines of the financial block’s layout pulsed on his screen. "But the biometric keys they’re using at the front desk are linke

The private jet cut through the clouds, shaking violently for three long seconds as the landing gear dropped with a heavy, mechanical clank beneath the floorboards. The pilot’s voice crackled once over the cabin intercom, short and flat, announcing their descent into the private airfield on the outskirts of Geneva.Eli didn't look out the window. His fingers were still hooked into the strap of his duffel bag, his knuckles slightly white as he watched the digital altimeter on the dashboard drop rapidly toward zero. The cold sweat from his nightmare had dried against his neck, leaving his skin feeling tight and cold under the collar of his t-shirt.Lucien sat perfectly straight in the adjacent seat, his long fingers quickly buttoning his dark uniform jacket before he reached down to pull the heavy box of 2021 registers closer to his boots. The soft, loose expression he had worn right after Eli woke up was completely gone, replaced by that rigid, freezing mask he used whenever he had to

The line went completely dead for a second, the static on the other end of the phone hissing softly into Eli’s ear like the sound of dry leaves scraping against concrete. He kept his shoulder pressed against the wall of the Bee Hive dorm, his fingers tightening around the cold plastic casing of the device until his knuckles turned a sharp, bloodless white. "Mom?" he repeated, his voice dropping into a tighter, harder register. He looked down at Lucien, who was still resting his head against Eli’s chest, his breathing slow and even, completely oblivious to the sudden shift in the room. "Eli," a voice said on the other end, but it wasn’t his mother’s. It was flat, formal, and entirely devoid of any rhythm that belonged to their small house in the southern district. It sounded like the administrative proctors from the main block, or the corporate secretaries who handled the housing logs. "This is the regional precinct supervisor for the district hospital. We need you to identify a cle

Three days back at Saint Aurelius, things were taking shape. Not a relationship exactly, not yet, but something with the texture of one, Lucien showing up places he had reasons to be and some he didn’t, Eli letting him, both of them existing in a middle ground of two people who loved where they wer
