Seren

I started cleaning the guest rooms but couldn’t stop thinking about my reaction to her naming Alpha Duncan specifically and the uneasiness I felt at her plans to trap him. ‘What do you think that’s about, Kara? I’ve never felt like that before, and I’ve overheard and seen so many things that should upset me much more than another one of her plans.’

‘I don’t know for sure, Seren, but I think we need to do what we can to stay hyperaware these next few days. I feel like something big is going to happen, and not just our upcoming birthday and shift. Just keep your eyes open,’ Kara responded, and I mentally nodded and got on with my day.

Once I’d finished the guest rooms, I moved on to Amelia’s suite. If I waited to clean the pack house later, when traffic is minimal, it would decrease the chance of being targeted. I refreshed everything—her linens, her towels in her en suite, anything that I could think she would have an issue with. I pressed her chosen outfits, cleaned her shoes. When I was done, I locked her room and headed out.

I looked up and Amelia’s alleged best friend was standing at the end of the hall, glaring at me. “There you are, mutt. I wonder what would happen if something in Amelia’s room went missing after you cleaned it? I’ve been eyeing that new bracelet Amelia bought. I bet I could swipe it, blame it on you, hide it away for a while and then have it for myself,” Jennifer sneered. Before I could say anything, though, someone else stepped in.

“That might have worked, Jennifer, if you hadn’t just been stupid enough to state that out in the wide open where anyone could hear…or record…you,” Kayla stated. I’d never in my life been so relieved to see her. Kayla may have only been an omega, but she was the head omega’s daughter, so she didn’t get pushed around nearly as much as the other omegas. No one wanted to piss off the head omega, because you’d suddenly have issues like cold food, dirty linens, and any other number of unfortunate and annoying issues until she was over her grudge. I looked over at her and tried to show her how grateful I was for her intervention. She glanced at me and winked, her bright red hair bouncing a bit as she turned back to Jennifer.

“I wasn’t actually going to do it, obviously,” Jennifer said with a roll of her eyes, though they flashed with something like frustration. “It was a hypothetical.”

“Obviously. And if this ‘hypothetical’ situation happens anytime soon, then don’t you worry. I’ve got the recording right here to make sure the Alpha knows who actually committed the theft,” Kayla said, using air quotes and waving her phone in the air.

“Ugh. Fine. Whatever,” Jennifer huffed, then turned and flounced away, her brown ponytail bobbing.

“Thank you, Kayla. I don’t know what I’d have done if you hadn’t shown up. That would have certainly earned me some major injuries,” I said to her.

“No worries. I overheard her talking to the bitch squad downstairs, so I already knew she was up to no good. I’m just glad that I could catch it. Now, how much more do you have to do and how can I help?” she asked.

“I’m almost done up here. Next is the pack house itself, which I’m going to delay a little so that traffic dies down. I was going to try to sneak into the kitchen for something to eat—meet me down there?”

“Sure. I’ll grab some plates from Mom and head outside. Should be relatively peaceful for you there.” She turned and headed back down the stairs.

I walked over to the large supply room on the Alpha floor and started putting supplies away when I smelled mint and pine. “Oh, no,” I muttered. I knew that scent. I’d sent Kayla away too soon. The alpha’s son was here.

Gavin POVI wasn't going to see Elara again before we launched the rescue. We decided moving quickly was critical, even though we had limited information. Waiting another night for the chance to reach her in the dream realm might have answered more questions, but it also risked costing lives.Once we realized the teams needed to be small, tactical groups, the operation came together quickly. We relied on our close personal guard in addition to ranked members. None of us wanted to risk leaking the plans and tipping off the hunters. After Declan had pointed out how well placed they were, no one could argue the conclusion that someone had given them the knowledge. We needed to find out if we had an active leak or if it was gained through years of kidnappings, but that had to wait until we shut this location down. As a result, my parents, uncle, and grandparents were coming with us. Part of me hated that they insisted on it. I wanted them safely behind the palace walls. The other part kn

  • Luna Rising   Against the Clock

Elara POVThe diffuser buzzed again. I covered my face and waited it out. After it stopped and the particles settled, I pulled my shirt away from my nose and went back to pacing. I'd been in my cell for at least twelve hours, if what the guards said about the timer on the mister was true. There had been no sign of the doctors in the hours that had passed since I woke up.Covering my face kept the mist from wrecking me completely, but still left my limbs feeling heavy. My mind was clear, though, and that was my best weapon right now. Being able to think was critical to escaping. My senses had returned after I'd blocked the poison in the air for the third time, and I didn't have to strain so hard to hear the guards now. They'd done their rounds, but chatter had been minimal. From what I could tell, everyone was worried about what had happened the last time I was in the lab. I wasn't entirely sure myself, if I was being honest. But maybe their fear could be used against them. They had

Gavin POVElaine arranged the candles in a circle around the map and anchored the four points with chunks of tourmaline. When she had the table set, she stepped back and gestured me forward, withdrawing a small knife as she did so. “I’ll make a small incision, just enough for a few drops. I need you to let them fall on the map,” she said. Her hand was warm, her grip firm but still gentle as she drew her knife across the flesh just below my thumb. The blade broke through my skin with a quick sting. I squeezed, letting the red blood fall onto the map as she’d directed. “That’s enough,” she said. Atka closed the wound quickly, leaving no trace of it behind. Elaine stepped forward, chanting over the makeshift altar. The flames spiked high as she said, “Hecate, Selene, I call unto thee. Help us trace this destiny. Show us where his essence resides, where a part of his soul now survives. Lead us to what we seek. As I will, so mote it be.”Air moved through the room, ruffling my hair as t

  • Luna Rising   The First Step

Gavin POVI'd woken significantly later than usual. After realizing that Elaine's experiment had worked, I rushed through a shower and tossed some clothes on, then ran to the meeting hall. I was just coming up outside the doors when I heard my uncle arguing with my parents. "I can't just stand back! This is my kingdom! My responsibility! My failure!" There was a thump punctuating each statement, like he was hitting his fist against the table. "This wasn't your failure, Gideon," my mother's voice carried through the door, soft and soothing. "There's nothing you could have done to prevent this."Uncle Gideon scoffed. "I could have noticed my people going missing sooner. Could have kept better tabs on the ones who scattered after the war. Then we'd have an idea of where to look, at least!""This is not on you, brother. No more than Mikhail's actions were on our father twenty years ago." A chair scraped and someone was moving around. "You don't blame Dad for the war that produced the Lu

  • Luna Rising   Solitary Confinement

Elara POVThe first thing I noticed as I came out of the dream was the smell. It was…wrong. The second thing was the necklace in my fist. I lifted my hand, the chain dangling against my forearm as I brought the tooth closer to examine it. It looked real. It certainly felt solid in my hand. The chain was cold against my skin, swinging freely as I turned the tooth over and examined the wire wrapping that formed the top, creating a bail for the chain to slide through. And when I gripped the tooth tightly against my palm, the edges bit in with just a hint of pain.I’d brought something of Gavin’s from my dream into reality. My heart thumped hard at the thought. How was that possible? While I’d known I was traveling outside of myself, that the dreams were more than dreams, I had never imagined I could carry something through the planes. A tiny hiss brought my focus back to the room, and I looked around to see where it came from. There, up in the vents, a puff of mist was already dissip

  • Luna Rising   Confirmation

Gavin POVThe day dragged. It felt as though each hour took three before it was over. Despite multiple meetings with my uncle, spending time with my grandparents, and catching up with Elaine, I couldn't get the time to pass fast enough. I wanted to go to sleep. Now that I knew there was a very real chance that the girl in my dreams existed, that she was actually a person, I wanted to find her. I wanted to give her the token, like Elaine suggested, to see if we could track it, to find out why she's been coming to me in dreams instead of reality. I wanted to find out why I was so obsessed with her. Because I was. Now that I'd finally admitted it, I realized I'd been obsessed with her since the first dream. Since the first time she'd walked across that meadow, her eyes sparkling and bright. When darkness fell after dinner, I slipped away from the family and went back to my suite. I couldn't handle more small-talk. My body was vibrating with anticipation as I pushed through the door,
