LOGINI’ve always been the shadow behind Bianca, the golden girl of the Hartwell Pack beautiful, graceful, perfect. Me? I’m the broad-shouldered one everyone overlooks, with a gift nobody values. I sense the threads binding our pack, taste truth and lies in a wolf’s scent. The elders laugh, calling it a distraction for the fat girl while the real wolves handle what counts. Everyone expects Alpha Prince Kaelan Ashford to choose Bianca at the Mate Ceremony. But when the bond snaps into place, it’s me. For one wild heartbeat, I believe fate picked me. Then Kaelan laughs right in my face. He doesn’t just reject me he mocks my weight in front of everyone. The bond splinters, leaving something raw and bleeding inside. Kaelan has no idea what he’s done. Rejecting a true mate isn’t just cruel. For an Alpha, it’s a curse. The bond will eat away at him, slow and merciless, until nothing’s left. After the ceremony, Hartwell turns to nightmare. Bianca’s jealousy grows sharp and cruel, and every day reminds me I don’t belong. I have nothing left to lose. So I run. But before I can vanish, Alpha Rhys Sterling finds me. He’s young, respected, and his eyes see through me. He doesn’t care how I look, only what I can do. Rhys wants me in his pack. He thinks I matter. I’m shoving the last of my things into a bag when Kaelan storms in, his grip iron, eyes burning with a fury I’ve never seen. “You’re not leaving,” he growls. Now I’m trapped between the prince who broke me and the Alpha who sees me. I must choose where I belong before fate rips the choice away.
View MoreThe scent hit me first. Pine. Smoke. Something colder underneath, like frost clinging to stone. My whole body locked up.
Mate.
I didn’t even know I could feel it until now. Something snapped tight behind my ribs, yanking me toward the dais. Alpha Prince Kaelan Ashford stood there in ceremonial black, golden eyes locking on mine across a sea of wolves.
For one breath, I let myself believe it. The Moon Goddess had actually seen me.. me, Ivy Hart, the girl who always made herself smaller so Bianca could shine and decided I was worth choosing. Chosen by a prince.
Then I saw his face change.
He didn’t even try to hide it. His nose wrinkled, like I stank. His eyes dragged down my body the curve of my hips, the softness of my arms and his face twisted with disgust so sharp it stung worse than a slap.
"No," he said. Not to me. To his father, to the council, to the entire pack watching. "That's not there has to be a mistake."
There wasn’t. Everyone in the hall felt the bond humming between us, an invisible cord of moonlight neither of us wanted. Both of us hating it, but for different reasons.
Bianca stood three feet away, radiant in gold silk, and for once in my life I watched her face do something other than pity me. I watched it go pale with fury. She'd been expecting to be chosen. She'd spent the morning practising her acceptance speech in the mirror while I helped pin her hair.
"Kaelan." His father's voice cracked like a whip. "The bond does not lie. Complete the ceremony."
A muscle jumped in Kaelan’s jaw. He looked at me again really looked, like I was something he was about to toss in the trash. I knew, with a clarity that would haunt me, he was weighing the cost. What this would do to his reputation. What marrying the fat girl would cost him.
He chose.
"I reject you, fatass." His voice was flat. Bored. Like the words meant nothing. He even laughed, like the whole thing was a joke.
Silence. One breath. Then laughter first a snicker, then a wave rolling through the hall until everyone was drowning in it. I stood there in my ceremonial dress, two hundred people laughing at me when I should have been the most important person in the room. I felt the bond shatter.
Not sever. Shatter. Like a window breaking, but the frame still holding jagged glass sharp enough to cut for years.
I don’t remember leaving. Just the cold night air on my wet face. Bianca’s voice chasing me, not with comfort, but with something sharp. "Do you know what you’ve done? Do you know how this makes me look?"
That was the moment something in me went quiet. Hard. Still. More than the rejection itself.
Three weeks later, my bag was packed. A new pack was waiting.
Alpha Rhys Sterling arrived in Hartwell territory the week after the ceremony. New blood. New pack. His eyes didn’t flinch away from me like everyone else’s. He watched me settle a fight between two warriors, saw me read the lie under their words. Instead of calling it a trick, he just asked, quiet, if I’d ever thought about what else my gift could do.
"Come work for me," he'd said. "Not because of the bond. Because you're wasted here."
No one had ever wanted me for what I could do, not what I looked like. I said yes before I could talk myself out of it.
So there I was at dusk, bag over my shoulder, walking toward the border. Toward the first life that might actually be mine.
A hand closed around my arm, hard enough to bruise.
I didn’t have to turn. Pine. Smoke. Frost.
"Going somewhere?" Kaelan’s voice was low. Dangerous. Nothing like the bored cruelty from the hall. This voice had teeth.
"Home," I said, yanking my arm. His grip stayed tight. "Somewhere I’m actually wanted. Let go."
"You don’t get to just leave." His fingers tightened. For the first time, I heard something under the anger. Almost panic. "The bond isn’t broken. Do you know what that means? Do you know what happens if you walk onto Sterling land wearing my mark"
"You rejected me in front of everyone," I snapped, turning to face him. Up close, his golden eyes weren’t smug. They were bloodshot. Hollow. Like something in him had been bleeding out for weeks. "You don’t get to decide now that you’ve changed your mind."
His jaw clenched. Then he said the words that would flip everything I thought I knew about that night, about him, about the bond burning under our skin:
"My mate isn't going anywhere."
Three Ashford guards stepped out of the trees behind him. My stomach dropped cold. This wasn’t a plea.
It was a claim.
We regrouped in Rhys's study. The fear in the room was so thick it made every breath feel loud. Mira spread brittle old texts across the desk, muttering about bloodline markers and scent signatures. Rhys paced, wearing a groove into the floor.I sat frozen in the corner. Trying to process that a woman I'd met once wanted to use me as a weapon."How did she know?" I finally asked. "I only found out myself hours ago."Silence. Heavier than any answer.Kaelan's jaw tightened. "There's only one way she could know something that specific, that fast.""Someone told her," Rhys said grimly.I felt sick before I even let myself think the name. "Bianca.""You don't know that," Kaelan said, though the doubt in his own voice betrayed him."Don't I?" My hands had curled into fists in my lap. "She's been furious since the ceremony. She's spent every day since telling anyone who'll listen how humiliated she was that you rejected me instead of picking her. If someone from the Draveth camp came sniffi
Three wolves waited at the Sterling border when we arrived. Ashford Kingdom colors. Unshifted. Black-and-gold royal guard uniforms, stiff as armor. But it was the fourth figure that made my stomach drop. I knew her the second I saw her.Lady Serrin Draveth. She was beautiful in that cold, perfect way that only comes from a lifetime of being trained to be watched. Sharp cheekbones. Ink-black hair twisted into a crown braid. A smile that never touched her eyes."Alpha Sterling," she said, inclining her head to Rhys with exaggerated courtesy before her gaze slid to me. "And this must be the famous Ivy Hart. You're smaller than the rumors suggested.""Funny," I said, "considering the rumors mostly focus on how large I am."Something flickered across her face surprise, maybe, that I hadn't wilted. She recovered fast. "I'm not here for pleasantries. I'm here on behalf of the King, to collect the girl named in the royal order.""She's not going anywhere with you," Kaelan said, stepping forwa
We stayed up half the night poring over the intercepted letter, Rhys's scouts' reports, and everything Kaelan could recall from council meetings he'd only half been allowed into. By the time grey dawn light crept through the study windows, I had a headache, three cups of cold tea, and absolutely no plan that didn't end with either me in a royal cell or Kaelan married to a woman actively plotting to end his bloodline."There has to be something in the old bonding laws," Rhys muttered, dragging a hand through his hair. "A loophole. Some precedent for""There is," said a voice from the doorway. We all turned. An older woman stood there, silver hair braided severely back, leaning on a carved wooden staff Mira, Rhys's pack historian, whom I'd only met once in passing during my first week."Forgive the intrusion," she said, though she didn't sound remotely sorry. "I couldn't help overhearing. And I couldn't, in good conscience, let you keep searching blind when the answer is sitting three f
Nobody moved for a long moment.Rhys's whole body had shifted into something coiled and dangerous, a wall between me and the doorway before I'd even registered him standing. "You have exactly one reason not to be thrown off this land right now," he said. "Talk fast."Kaelan's eyes found mine over Rhys's shoulder, and for once there was no arrogance in them at all. Just exhaustion, and something rawer underneath it."My father isn't doing this to protect the kingdom," he said. "He's doing it because a fully severed bond would let him arrange a political marriage for me before the Draveths can use my weakened power as an excuse to challenge the throne. Ivy isn't a problem to him. She's an inconvenience standing between him and a treaty he's already negotiating.""And you know this because?" Rhys's voice was ice."Because I overheard him say it." Kaelan's throat worked. "Word for word. 'The girl was never the point. She's a loose thread.' That's what he called you, Ivy. A loose thread to
