LOGINOne of the reasons I chose psychiatry was there is rarely any kind of emmergency that cannot wait until morning. That means I get to sleep through the night and not worry that my patients may be dying. So when my phone started to ring in the middle of the night, I took a pillow and covered my ears and went back to sleep. In the morning I get up and find that I have two messages on my voicemail. The first is from an unfamiliar number and the calller does not identify himself. "Hello, sorry to disturb your sleep but I was wondering if you think a life should be repaid by a life? If not what do you think is an equivalent of someone's life? Do you think gender, age or the income of someone should be used to calculate the value of their life? And what about the dignity of someones death. As someone who's been experimenting with death yourself how do you measure someones' worth before deciding to send them off to their deaths?"
I look back at my phone. I feel like someone is watching me. Who is that? What does he mean as someone who has been experimenting on death myself? I walk back to my bed where my phone is. I replay the message. The voice is not familiar but it is obviously foreign with a unique accent I cannot place. I feel all the blood rush from my head and I start feeling dizzy. I have not said anything to anyone about the police's accusation. Did that fool detective go around running his mouth. The second message is from Jade telling me all about her date. Honestly I barely hear anything she says. I take a quick shower. I rush out after a quick cup of coffee. I have a feeling today is going to be one of those days.
The police station smells like what you would expect. It does not seem to bother the people there. I walk to the officer who's closest and looks the least terrifying. "Hello sir," he looks up just for a second and goes back to looking at his computer. "How can I help you on this fine day miss?" I do not appreciate the sarcasm but figure I have bigger problems. "Can you please tell me where I can find detective Swindler?" he looks up at me again before pointing to a door with 'SWINDLER' written across it very clearly. I feel a bit embarassed and whisper a small thankyou, which I doubt he heard or has any much use for.
I knock at the door twice before a booming voice from the other side of the door replies. I open to see three guys that is including detective Swindler. They excuse themselves and I am left stading across detective Swindler in what is actually a very neat office. "I did not think you'd come see me voluntarily," he points to the seat that is next to me. I sit and remove my phone from my bag ready to play him the recording. "So, come to surrender yourself already?" he looks at me with a little twinkle in his eye. If he wasn't so damn annoying I might have found him attractive. I cannot help it but roll my eyes, to which he lets out a laugh. "No, I have a complain. Actually I should be talking to your superior but I decided to come to you first," he does not look concerned by the mention of his superior. "Well doc what did I do?" I play him the recording. As the recording plays out his face gets more serious. I notice the way he plays with his earlobe when he concentrates.
"Listen I don't know whether you'll believe me but I have noting to do with it," he looks genuinely surprised. "You mean to tell me you do not recognize that voice?" he looks at my phone and then back at me. "No, I have never heard that voice in my life. " How about this, you go to work and i'll dig deeper. If I find something I will come tell you right way or even call," I stand looking at my wrist watch. I had not realized how late it was. "Fine but what about the recording?" "Send it to me, and i'd advice you to delete the one you have. It will only drive you crazy." I send him the recording and leave.

kerrick's pov.
I have been at this freaking place for a week now. I suck at remembering people's name so when two detectives show up in my office to invite me to drinks after work I try my best to keep the conversation short. In my head I refer to them as detective leather jacket and the other as detective shortstuff. That way i'll remember them but I cannot say that to their faces. After rejecting their offer as politely as I can they still have other follow up questions and my answers are not so polite. So when I hear the first knock I cannot believe that I can be so lucky. It is until the second knock that I am sure it is not a hallucination.
I look at her as she starts to play the recording and all I can see is fear written all over her face. I have not told anyone about the case. Questioning her was actually a matter of protocol. I do not believe that she has anything to do with murders. After she left I started thinking. Either someone out there believes she has something to do with the murders or someone wants me to believe it.
I hear another knock in the middle of replaying the recording. It is detective leather jacket and detective short stuff. I really have to learn their names. "Hey we thought he left the country after his last arrest,"detective shortstuff says before taking a seat across from me. "Who? the guy from the recording?" "Yeah we arrested him a lot mostly for drinking and driving," said his partner who was standing behind him. "You know him? Where can I find him? I think he might be connected to a case I am working on." The look at each other for a brief moment, "impossible, the last time we arrested him was almost two years ago on assault. It was so serious, the victim refused to settle and insisted on going to court. The morning before court the captain told us to let him go. " detective leather jacket looks so mad as he tells me. His partner laughs, "it always bothered him because we had a solid case and the captain refused to tell us the reason why we had to let him go. After a while we went to look for the alleged victim and he had disappeared." I look at both of them, "he died?" they shake their heads in unison."No one seemed to know where he had gone and the ones who were close to him looked scared to talk."
Detective leather jacket hit replay after the recording had stopped. "You know what always nagged me about the case, the guy did not have enough resources to make all of that happen. Including getting the captain on his side, something was not right." "Why did you stop following up on him?" I asked them. "Because captain made a sort of deal with the person who was backing him that he would never come back to the country," "And you believed him?" detective shortstuff continued "Of course not but the captain said the person who had made the deal had so much to loose to allow him back to this country."
I feel groggy. I open my eyes slowly to the blinding lights. He is by my side, and the last time he had held me by force flashes back to me."Not again," I whisper."You are awake," he says smiling."Where am I?" I ask as he helps me sit up. "You are in the hospital," he looks at my side where I was hurt. The wound is properly stitched and bandaged.I remember him drugging me. I trail my fingers to the back of my neck, not sure if it had really happened. The soreness confirms it for me.Just as I am about to question him about it, the door slides open."You are up. How are you feeling?"Amelia asks coming in. "Ready to get out of here," she looks at her file unsure."We still don't know why you passed out," I look at Avan who is staring at me innocently."He drugged me," I say. Amelia looks between us at the revelation. "He what?" She looks confused on how to proceed."I had to get her to the hospital," he says like it is something normal."Well if that's it, then you are free to go,"s
“Starr,” he calls me like it is just another day. I can’t do this. I run past him before he can say anything else. I don’t know where I am running to, all I know is I need to get away from him.“Hey, hey, hey,” Kerrick stops me at the door. “What is the rush?” Kerrick asks. I look behind me. He is not following me, I relax.“We need to leave,” I grab his arm, and start walking. He pulls me back. My back comes in contact with his chest. “Wait,” his fingers trail along my arm to my hand. He takes my mask which I had forgotten all about. He puts it on for me. He makes me turn around so I can look at him. He wants to say something but I start before he gets a chance, “you were right, this place is dangerous.”He nods, but looks at where I came from. “Okay, let’s leave,” he says, and we walk out.Throughout the drive home, I stay silent. I feel him looking at me, but I assume him. There is nothing I can say to him that will make any of this make sense. He stops in front of my apartment. I
We are in the third row in the auction hall. “Good evening ladies and gentlemen. Welcome to the auction,” even with the mask on I can tell it is Jaden. He steps down the podium, and a lady dressed in blue takes over. Her voice is charming as it echoes in every corner of the hall. She begins the auction, and everyone goes silent. All the pieces are exquisite but, I have my eyes set on a specific one.The auction is competitive, and brutal. “This is going for fifty thousand dollars,” she says, pointing at the art that had stolen my attention. It is cheaper compared to the other pieces. I don’t hesitate, I raise my pedal. I can feel someone watching me. I resist the urge to look back.“A hundred,” I know who the voice belongs to, the guy in the devil mask.I have never touched the trust fund left by my parents. I have the money, but I am sure if I raise the number, he will raise his and we will keep doing that until I get frustrated or he gets bored.I still hate the fact that the art is
As I take one last look at myself, I can't help but feel excited. It has been very long since I have felt this way. Kerrick is in my living room waiting patiently for me. As I walk in the living room, he gets up from the couch. His eyes wander from my face down to my body, where they linger. Most of the time he is very hard to read, but not now. He doesn't even have to say it, but he does anyway. "Wow...just wow," I smile at his poorly worded compliment. "Are you ready?" I ask, admiring his new look. I have never seen him looking so official and elegant. "Yes, unless there is someting you would like to add," at his offer, I take a step closer to him. His tie is a bit crooked. I straighten it. I raise my eyes to his face and find that he is already looking at me. "You are ready now," I try not to stutter. He nods. I should step back. I really should, but I don't. I feel his hands come up to my back, his eyes never leaving mine. He leans in, and I don't move away. If I am being ho
I have dresses to go to parties, I do. But this feels like it requires something else. Something that only Jade can help me look for. That is why I am having a second glass of wine as I wait for her. I want to say she is never late, but that would be a lie.She pulls over in front of the wine bar. I watch as she gets out of the car and puts on her sunglasses. She parts her hair effortlessly using her hand. I can't stop staring at her, amazed by her presence. Believe me everyone here is looking at her. She is simply magnetic. "Sorry for keeping you waiting hon," she says, drinking the rest of my wine. "Where were you?" she looks around. "The other side of town. I have been trying my best to avoid spending any time at home," she explains. "Why? I thought with Rackel out of the house, you would like it," she takes her sunglasses off revealing bloodshot eyes. "Well, so did I," she looks exhausted. "Turns out my dad is really hard to live with, especially when he is alone. His attenti
I have thought of all the places she might be hiding, only to realize I don't know much about her. Other than the fact that she worked as John's secretary before she got married to him. Kerrick is insuferable when he is feeling frustrated. After the call with Jade ended with no better lead, he took me to work with him. We have been going through everything, and at this point I am almost sure I can recite what is in this damn files. "I need a break," he tears his eyes from what he is reading. He nods at my request before returning his attention the paperwork. "What are hoping to find?" I hadn't thought patnering up with him will be us cooped up in this office going over the same paperwork over and over again. "Something, anything," he closes the file he has been reading and takes another one. I can't be here any longer. It is almost twelve and it is the perfect time for me to head to the my office. I get up. He is too focused on what he is reading to even notice. I am worried he
I finally get Jade to calm down. She is lying in bed as I gently stroke her hair. When her breathing deepens and slows down, I realise she is finally asleep.I am on edge and really jumpy. I don't know what I need to hear to calm down. His death might not even have anything to do with me. I try to
The lights are off, but the bright reflection from the moon lights the whole room. He lifts me from the floor and puts me on the computer desk that is close to the door. He leans in and lick my lips. I close my eyes in anticipation. He tightens his grip on my waist and pull me to the edge of the d
I have lost track of just how much I have had to drink. Everything suddenly feels like it is not such a big deal. Jade pulls me from my seat and we start dancing. We haven't been up for long and there are two guys grinding against me from the back and the front. I link my arm around the guy in fro
"Hello," I say as soon as she picks up. "Hey, girl. How have you been?" It's so nice to hear her voice. "I feel like I haven't talked to you in forever," I say, trying to push away what just happened from my mind. "I am still mad at you," Jade is someone who can't keep what she's feeling to hersel
