The eastern fence groaned under the weight of the storm, mud, rain, and poor construction, finally admitting what Evelyn had already seen.

The support posts leaned downhill at an angle that made her stomach tighten. Water streamed beneath the fencing in thin brown rivers while freezing rain struck the compound hard enough to blur the floodlights.

Caleb stood beside her with a hammer in one hand and a coil of scavenged wire over his shoulder.

“You were right,” he said quietly.

  • MY EX LEFT ME TO DIE, SO I BECAME QUEEN OF THE APOCALYPSE   Chapter 85 — There You Are

The name moved through the trees behind the convoy in Evelyn’s exact tone, soft and urgent enough that the sound felt like a hand sliding under her ribs.Rowan went still.Evelyn turned toward him.His face had emptied, not because he believed it, but because the voice had chosen him next. The Watcher had used Lily first because Lily was the easiest wound to press. Now it had shifted to Rowan, and somehow that felt more intimate. Crueler. It had learned enough to understand that Rowan would not run for a child’s voice if he knew the child was safe. But Evelyn’s voice? That was a different blade.“Rowan,” the false Evelyn called again. “Come here.”Dean whispered, “Oh, that is vile.”Gabriel looked from Rowan to Evelyn, his expression controlled but no longer unreadable. He understood what the Watcher had done. Maybe not the whole of it, not the months of quiet trust built in glances, arguments, shared watches, and hands catching wrists before falls. But he understood enough. The Watch

  • MY EX LEFT ME TO DIE, SO I BECAME QUEEN OF THE APOCALYPSE   Chapter 84 — Not Alone

Evelyn stood at the edge of the service trail with rain misting her face, the black mouth of the culvert behind her, and Lily’s voice calling from the trees on the far side of the convoy.“Evelyn, help me.”The real Lily stood beside Nora near the second truck, both hands clamped around the stuffed fox as if it might keep the rest of her from shaking apart. Her mouth was open, but no sound came out. Nora had one arm wrapped around her shoulders, pulling her back against the truck door with a grip that looked gentle only because Lily was small. The copied voice came again from the opposite side of the road.“Evelyn.”It was perfect enough to hurt. Not flat like Vale’s voice in the tunnel. Not rough like Warren’s imitation through the culvert. This was clearer, softer, shaped with terrible care. A child’s voice, lifted from the air and turned into bait.Dean whispered, “Absolutely not.”No one moved. The convoy had frozen in a crooked line beneath the wet trees. Mark stood halfway betwe

For one breath, everyone looked the wrong way.Toward the tunnel.Toward the black mouth of concrete and rushing water.Toward the place where Vale’s voice had spoken from the dark. Then the shape above them moved. Not much.Only a tilt of the head.A small adjustment of attention. The kind of movement a person might make while studying an insect trapped beneath glass.Lily made a tiny sound behind Nora.Rowan shifted first. He moved without panic, turning his rifle toward the ridge while stepping between Evelyn and the upper slope. Gabriel rose from beside Rusk with his axe in one hand, and the other extended slightly toward Lily and Nora, not touching them, but guiding them back by presence alone.Warren lifted his rifle.Dean whispered, “That is not where voices should come from.”No one answered. The Watcher stood half-hidden by mist and branches, its long limbs pale against the dark trunks. Rain slid down the leaves around it. If water touched its skin, Evelyn could not tell. It

  • MY EX LEFT ME TO DIE, SO I BECAME QUEEN OF THE APOCALYPSE   Chapter 82 — Permission

Evelyn stood in the ravine with rain misting her face and the black mouth of the culvert behind her, breathing hard, the cold having settled in her lungs. Rowan stayed between her and the opening, rifle still raised. Gabriel lowered Rusk carefully onto a patch of wet leaves while Dean paced in a tight circle, shaking water from one boot and terror from the rest of him.“I would like to file a complaint,” Dean said.Evelyn looked at him. “About?”“The tunnel. The voice. The hand. The concept of drainage. All of it.”“Filed.”“With urgency?”“Extreme urgency.”“Thank you.”Gabriel pressed a cloth to Rusk’s wound, his own sleeve dark with the patrolman’s blood. “We need Mrs. Carter.”Evelyn lifted the radio, hesitated, then unclipped it from her shoulder and held it away from her mouth.Everyone noticed.Rowan looked at the culvert.Gabriel looked at the radio.Dean stopped pacing. “Oh. Right. The evil echo problem.”Evelyn turned the volume down and pressed the button only once.“Warren

  • MY EX LEFT ME TO DIE, SO I BECAME QUEEN OF THE APOCALYPSE   Chapter 81 — Open the Latch

The word vanished beneath the rush of water. For one awful second, nothing moved inside the maintenance chamber. Rowan stood pressed close enough that Evelyn could feel the line of his body along her shoulder. Gabriel held his axe low, his flashlight angled toward the black passage. Dean kept his rifle trained on the darkness with both hands locked around it, the barrel trembling just enough to betray him.The yellow latch waited on the wall.Old paint.Rust around the hinges.A simple maintenance mechanism suddenly felt more dangerous than any weapon in the tunnel. From the dark passage, Vale’s voice came again. Not Vale.Something that was wearing the shape of her voice badly.“Southern access is clear.”The pauses were wrong.Rusk had been right about that. The voice knew the words, but not the breath between them. It flattened the command into sound without understanding the human rhythm underneath. Like a child repeating a prayer in a language it had never learned.Rusk began to

  • MY EX LEFT ME TO DIE, SO I BECAME QUEEN OF THE APOCALYPSE   Chapter 80 — Both Ways

The wounded patrolman’s voice scraped through the maintenance chamber and seemed to vanish into the sounds of rushing water. No one touched the yellow latch.Gabriel’s hand remained half-raised toward it, fingers still, palm open. Slowly, he lowered his arm.Dean stared at the latch as though it had personally betrayed him. “I knew yellow was a suspicious color.”Rowan moved his light from the latch to the dark passage beyond the chamber. “What’s on the other side?”The patrolman tried to answer, but the effort folded him inward. He coughed once, wet and painful, then pressed his blood-slick hand harder against his side.Evelyn crouched closer. Not too close. His flare gun still rested against his thigh, and fear made people dangerous even when they were half-dead.“My name is Evelyn,” she said. “We came from the south ridge. Captain Vale sent us.”The man’s eyes sharpened despite the fever glaze. “Vale’s alive?”“Yes.”A breath went out of him.It might have been relief. It might hav

The front windows exploded inward. Glass sprayed across the convenience store in glittering shards while people screamed and stumbled backward into shelves and displays. Something hit the floor hard.Growling.Wet.Animal.Evelyn’s body locked up for half a second.Rainwater.Teeth.Rotting hands a

The rain followed Evelyn out of the warehouse—cold, heavy, relentless.By the time she loaded the last of the supplies into her trunk, water had soaked through the shoulders of her jacket and numbed her fingers. Around her, people moved faster through the parking lot now, carts rattling wildly acro

By the time Evelyn left the second store, rain hammered hard enough against the windshield to blur the city into streaks of red brake-lights and gray concrete.Traffic crawled northbound. Too many people were suddenly deciding they needed bottled water and batteries at the same time.Instinct. Eve

By noon, Evelyn had spent nearly four thousand dollars. And it still didn’t feel like enough.People still laughed in the parking lot while buying Halloween decorations beneath emergency alerts, completely unaware the world was already starting to crack beneath them. The shelves inside the grocery
