MasukI walked out of the massive dining room with Damien's black credit card tucked securely into the front pocket of my jeans. My fingers traced the raised numbers on the plastic through the denim fabric. My mind raced as I thought about the tense dinner conversation.
Vanessa had glared at me the whole time I ate my dessert. I knew she would corner me later tonight to yell about the card. She hated losing control over my life, and Damien had just handed me my financial freedom on a silver platter.
Damien was a strange man, because he did not act the way I expected a billionaire to act. He watched me with a heavy stare, and he seemed to know things about me without asking. I felt a weird sense of respect for him, although his intense focus made me very uncomfortable.
I shook my head to clear my thoughts.
I felt incredibly thirsty. My throat was dry from all the nervous talking, so I needed a glass of cold water before I went up to bed.
There was a sleek intercom system mounted on the wall near the grand staircase. Vanessa told me I could use it to order anything I wanted at any hour. I refused to press the button. I did not want to summon a staff member just to fetch me a drink. I wanted to do things for myself, even if I lived in a giant mansion now.
I turned down a long corridor that I thought led back to the main kitchen.
I walked past several sitting rooms and a massive library. The house was quiet, and the silence felt very isolating. The staff had turned off most of the lights in this part of the estate for the night. Only a few dim wall sconces illuminated the path ahead. They cast long shadows across the polished hardwood floor.
My sneakers squeaked softly against the wood.
I wrapped my arms around my chest because the air conditioning was running high. The cold air gave me goosebumps, yet I kept walking deeper into the east wing.
I passed a row of heavy wooden doors that were all shut tight. I assumed they were private offices or extra guest suites. There were no signs of a kitchen anywhere.
I started to realize I was lost.
I stopped walking and looked around. I hoped to spot a familiar landmark, but nothing looked familiar. The dark wood paneling and the tall windows all blurred together in the gloom.
"Great job, Jaslyn," I muttered to myself. "You have been here for one day, and you are already wandering around in the dark."
I debated turning around. I could just go back to my bedroom and drink tap water from the bathroom sink. It would save me the trouble of exploring this creepy wing of the house.
I took a step backward, and a floorboard creaked loudly under my shoe.
The noise echoed down the empty hall.
I opened my mouth to let out a frustrated sigh. Before any sound could escape my lips, a massive hand reached out from the deep shadows to my left.
The palm clamped firmly over my mouth.
I let out a muffled shriek. A strong arm wrapped around my waist, and the person yanked me backward with a terrifying amount of force.
I stumbled on my feet. He dragged me into a dark, narrow alcove between two tall wooden bookshelves.
Pure panic surged through my veins.
I thrashed in his grip. I kicked my legs back to strike his shins, and I threw my elbow backward to hit his stomach. My elbow hit solid muscle, but the person did not flinch. My strikes did absolutely nothing to free me.
He held me tight against his broad chest to stop my frantic movements.
I sucked in a deep breath through my nose because I could not open my mouth. The scent of dark earth, pine, and fresh rain hit my senses right away.
My struggles ceased.
I knew exactly who was holding me in the dark.
It was Ryder.
I froze in place. My heart beat against my ribs so fast I thought it might break through my chest.
Ryder breathed very heavily. His chest rose and fell against my back in a fast, ragged rhythm. I felt his rapid heartbeat drumming right against my spine.
He was burning hot.
The unnatural heat radiating off his body soaked right through my sweater. He felt like a walking furnace in the cold, air-conditioned hallway. The static electricity I experienced on the front steps returned in full force. Hot sparks danced along my skin wherever his arm pressed against my waist.
The physical sensation was overwhelming, and it left me paralyzed.
I wanted to run away from him. I wanted to scream and demand he let me go. Yet a very strange, deep part of my brain wanted to lean back against his chest. I hated the confusing reaction my body had to his touch.
He did not try to hurt me, nor did he say a single word.
We stood there in the pitch black for several long seconds. I waited for him to explain why he grabbed me, but he just held me in the dark. His grip on my waist tightened just a fraction. His thumb brushed against the hem of my shirt.
The small movement sent a fresh wave of heat rushing through my blood.
Ryder finally loosened his grip on my mouth. He moved his hand away just enough so I could part my lips and take a real breath. He kept his hand hovering near my face, ensuring I would not scream for help.
I swallowed hard. My throat felt tighter than before.
He leaned down from behind me.
His face moved incredibly close to the side of my neck. I gasped when his nose brushed against the sensitive skin just under my jawline.
He inhaled a long, deep breath.
He was smelling me.
The action was terrifying. It felt invasive and deeply personal. I shivered, and my knees grew weak under his touch. I could not understand why he acted this way. He had shoved me away in absolute disgust just a few hours ago, but now he pulled me into the shadows to breathe in my scent.
He shifted his head so his lips hovered right next to my ear.
The hot air from his mouth ghosted over my skin.
"If you know what's good for you, you'll lock your fucking bedroom door at night."
I did not have the energy to fight him right now, so I stayed silent and waited for him to rescue me. I looked up toward the second-floor VIP balcony to find the real person responsible for this terrible trap.Sienna stood near the wooden railing, and she looked down at the scene with wide, panicked eyes. She had sent this large guy to humiliate me in front of the college crowd, and she clearly did not expect Ryder to show up.She gripped her clear glass very tight, and she leaned over the edge of the balcony to hear the confrontation. The massive upperclassman realized he was losing control of the situation, so he tried to push Ryder away with his free hand."Sienna told me to kick her out, so I am just following orders from my friend," the guy argued to defend his actions. "Sienna does not give orders," Ryder replied in a very cold tone, and he swatted the guy's hand away with incredible speed."She is a spoiled brat, and you are a fool for listening to her petty requests," Ryder ex
Connor stepped forward to protect me from the massive upperclassman, and he pushed his hands against the large chest of the bully. The heavy guy did not even flinch, because he was much taller and stronger than the college track runner. The cruel upperclassman swung his massive arm forward, and he shoved Connor backward with incredible force. Connor lost his balance and crashed hard into a small wooden table, and the loud impact sent plastic cups flying across the sticky floor.I gasped in shock and tried to step away to help my friend, but the huge guy turned his dark attention right back to me. He reached his large hand out, and he grabbed a thick handful of my dark hair before I could escape. He pulled my hair hard, and the sharp pain forced my head to tilt backward while the red drink dripped down my cold jeans. "I told you to walk out the front door," the cruel guy sneered, and his foul breath hit my face. Before he could issue another mean threat, a deafening crash echoed from t
I dropped my white towel onto the padded gym mat, because the terrible news from Evan sent a massive wave of raw panic straight into my chest. I did not waste any time asking him for more details, so I just turned around and ran toward the concrete stairs."You need to bring backup with you!" Evan yelled from the basement floor, although his loud voice faded away as I sprinted up the steps.I ignored his warning, since my inner wolf was already taking over my rational thoughts to protect my mate. I burst through the back doors of the massive estate, and I ran directly toward my dark SUV parked in the wide driveway.I jumped into the leather driver's seat and shoved the key into the ignition, because every single second mattered right now. I slammed my heavy boot onto the gas pedal, and the large vehicle tore out of the private driveway with a loud, screeching noise. The drive across town felt incredibly slow, although I pushed the powerful engine far past the legal speed limits. I swe
The dark night finally fell over the busy city, and the cool evening breeze did nothing to calm my racing thoughts. I stood on the paved sidewalk outside the massive off-campus frat house, because I was still reeling from the terrifying discovery I made in the library bathroom.I could not stop thinking about the brilliant silver flash in my own reflection, and the impossible memory made me feel incredibly dizzy. My legs felt very weak while I waited for Paige to arrive, yet I refused to go back to the Blackwood estate and face my mother.I knew my mother was hiding massive secrets about my biology, so I needed a distraction away from her strict rules. Paige jogged down the crowded street to meet me, and she wore a bright pink dress that stood out in the dark. She grabbed my hand with a wide smile, so I forced myself to return the happy expression although I felt sick to my stomach. "I am so glad you actually came out tonight, Jaslyn," Paige yelled over the loud chatter of the college
Paige’s loud voice echoed in my ears, and the high pitch of her panicked screams caused a sharp pain to spike through my skull. I pressed my hands flat against the rough concrete sidewalk, and I forced my trembling arms to push my heavy body upward. The college students formed a tight circle around us on the green quad, and their overlapping conversations made my intense nausea so much worse.I could hear the distinct sound of their shoes scraping against the pavement, and I could hear the rapid thumping of their individual heartbeats. The volume was absolutely unbearable, so I knew I had to get away from the crowd before I lost my mind."Jaslyn, please stay on the ground," Paige begged as she reached out to grab my shoulder. "I think you are having a seizure or a severe panic attack, so I am going to call the campus medical center.""Do not call anyone," I told her, and I pushed her hand away from my arm because her physical touch felt way too hot against my skin. "I am not having a
The strange, dull metallic ache in my chest was gone because I poured my morning tea into the dirt hours ago. A brand new warmth spread through my veins, and my body felt surprisingly light. I actually had energy to spare, so I did not mind the long walk to the science building.Paige jogged across the green grass to catch up with me, and she waved her hands in the air to grab my attention. She wore a bright yellow sweater, and she looked incredibly excited about something. She stopped right in front of me while she tried to catch her breath."I have been looking all over the campus for you," Paige said as she adjusted the heavy strap of her backpack. "You have to come with me tonight, Jaslyn. You cannot say no to this.""Come where?" I asked her, and I offered a small smile since her good mood was very contagious."Sienna is throwing a massive frat party off-campus tonight," Paige explained in a rapid rush of words. "It is the biggest event of the fall semester, and everyone from our
The car ride from the estate to the university was very quiet because Evan did not speak a single word to me. He sat in the driver's seat with a rigid posture, and his large hands gripped the leather steering wheel tight. I sat in the passenger seat and stared out the tinted window. I felt very sma
The sun began to rise over the tall stone walls of the estate, and the early morning light cast long shadows across the courtyard. I stood deep inside the cool darkness of the main garage because I needed to stay out of sight. My hands were shoved deep into the pockets of my dark jeans, and my jaw
RYDER'S POVEvan stood in the middle of the hallway and waited for an answer. I did not want to have this conversation out in the open where anyone from the staff or my family could hear us. I reached out and grabbed him by the arm so I could pull him down the corridor. He stumbled a bit, but he fo
