Chapter 2 - Guard my Cart Part 1

last update publish date: 2026-03-08 05:32:12

LIANA

The cart rattled when one of its wheels hit a crack in the sidewalk, and I winced even though nothing inside broke.

Old habit.

Everything of value we owned fit into that cart—sheet music wrapped in plastic, Remi’s spare sweater, his violin case strapped tight with bungee cords like a promise I was afraid to make.

The McDonald’s giant yellow M glowed ahead of me, all fluorescent warmth and cheap yummy goodness.

I was desperate for some hot food and scale breaking calories. Something solid I could bring back for our dinner, before my shift started.

But first things first - I needed to get in there.

I stopped short when I saw him.

He stood near the curb, tall and still in a way that made the chaos of Manhattan bend around him instead of collide.

Dark suit, sharp lines, no effort wasted. He had a phone plastered to his ear, head cocked a bit to the side.

Trustworthy, my mind supplied stupidly.

He owned the space. I wouldn’t make the mistake to call him safe. Just… solid.

Like someone who wouldn’t let a cart roll into traffic if he said he’d watch it.

I hesitated though.

People like him didn’t exist in my world anymore.

Some of the places I had stayed, they would take your shoes as you slept and bind you with your own laces!

But... I couldn’t take the cart inside.

Last time I tried, the staff had ushered me out and I had left without buying anything.

So, I took a breath and did the thing I was terrible at.

“Excuse me Sir”

The extremely tall, well-dressed gent didn’t turn, just continued barking orders at some poor person on the other side of his phone.

It gave me the chance to really take him in.

Camel long cashmere coat over black tapered trousers and shiny Italian shoes that probably cost more than everything in my cart.

I stepped closer, mmm he smelled so good…something woodsy with a deeper note of eastern spices, nutmeg and sandalwood.

I inhaled deeper, filling my lungs with it, soaking up the luxuriant extravagance that is fine expensive perfume.

Sharp dresser, elegant and a gorgeous head of thick dark hair.

Don't forget smells yummy...my traitorous libido chimed.

I had found the guardian for my treasures as he clearly was no threat to it.

Emboldened with this assessment, I reached out and softly touched his hand to get his attention.

I tried again, louder this time. “Excuse me Sir?”

The man turned swiftly at the contact, grasping my hand hard and looking completely surprised.

Dark grey eyes snapped to me.

Oh wow..he was even better looking than I had imagined.

Whoa..what was that?

My eyes widened as a jolt of electricity ran up my fingers to my arm where we touched as if I had been shocked.

I gasped at the harsh clasp of his much bigger hand imprisoning my wrist.

I peeked up from my lashes, mouthing a “Hi” and again he simply looked down at both our connected hands as if confused.

Sweet baby Jesus, if I had thought the back view was good…

This man was drop dead gorgeous. Silver grey eyes, tan skin with beautiful cheekbones and his mouth, those lips…shit where was my mind going???

His reaction startled me.

He stiffened. Actually stiffened. Like I’d shocked him. Maybe it was static??

The man looked at me differently now.

Not kinder. Just… focused.

As if something about that brief contact had cut through his annoyance and left him unsettled.

“Speak up girl…I’m on a call here…what do you want?" he snapped.

“If its change, then I don’t keep any” he stated flatly.

His deep voice sent a shiver down my spine but the insult of his words had me flinching.

Crass insults…judgement, I should be indifferent to it now but heck it still didn't get to me.

I stiffened and glared up at his lofty height.

His harsh words landed harder than I expected.

Heat crept up my neck.

“I’m not—” I shook my head, flustered. “I don’t want money.”

“Then what do you want?” he asked, irritation threading his voice.

I realized then that I had clenched my hand that was still engulfed in his.

I pulled it back instantly.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to—” I stuttered and gulped in air.

“I didn’t mean to bother you Sir.,” I said quickly, mortified.

A tremor seemed to pass through him at the address but I wasn’t finished..

“I wasn’t approaching you for charity. I was just hoping you could watch my cart.”

He exhaled, ran a hand along his jaw, then finally looked behind me and registered the cart.

He stared at it, then his eyes swept over me again and then focussed in on my shoes, worn thin at the soles.

I fidgeted under the intense scrutiny and my fingers of my tightened around the cart handle.

“I just needed someone to watch it for two minutes while I order food. They won’t let me in with it. I thought—” I gestured vaguely.

“You looked like someone who wouldn’t let it be taken.”

After my verbal upchuck I paused, feeling my cheeks heat and looked away. “It’s okay, I can find someone else.”

I had almost turned around, shoulders slumped in disappointment.

“No.” He snapped, the word came out sharper than necessary.

“I assumed,” he said, and stopped there.

That was almost an apology.

“I’ll watch it,” he added, curt but decisive.

“I have a few minutes until my driver gets here. Go.” He waved in the direction of the MacDonalds.

Relief flooded me so fast my eyes burned.

A smile, so wide it hurt, cracked my face.

“Really??? Thank you so much Sir,” I said meaning it more than he could know.

“I wont be long…I am so grateful Sir” I gave him another small grin and hurried inside before he could change his mind.

LiamThe universe had clearly decided this was *mess with Liam* week.Everything I thought I knew—everything I had built myself on—had been ripped out from under me.My siblings feared me. I had wanted—lusted and *obsessed over*—my own sister without knowing who she was to me.My entire life had been shaped by truths that weren’t truths at all. And now? Now I was sitting with a traitor that was posing as my best friend and second, who had murdered my father and was chasing power...mine.I let out a slow breath, staring out the window for a second before turning back into the room.My father…Seamus. He had a blood son. Remi. That I had resented, envied. Been encouraged and coached from behind the scenes to do so. And yet he had trained me, groomed me and above all else... he chose *me*.I didn’t deserve that. Didn’t deserve the loyalty he had given me… the love… the trust. But he hadn’t raised me to fold under pressure. He hadn’t raised me to *quit*. And I would be damned if the same

DentonA storm was rolling in.I could see it on the horizon—the sky bruising over in deep greys, the wind picking up, dragging the salt-heavy air across the deck. The ocean had turned restless, waves rising higher, crashing harder against the shoreline.Violent. Unpredictable. This time of year the Hampton beachline was mostly empty. Just a few locals—someone jogging with their hood up, a man throwing a ball for his dog, both of them fighting against the wind.Normal life. It felt far removed from mine. I rested my forearms on the railing, staring out at the water, but my mind wasn’t on the storm. It was on her. And on *that* call. Maria.I huffed out a breath, shaking my head slightly. Arianna would have liked her. Hell… I liked her.Good woman. Strong in that quiet way that didn’t need to announce itself. The kind of person people underestimated—until it was too late. And she had come close. Closer than anyone so far. “She is probably safest wherever she is…” My own words echoed ba

Maria The table had been cleared, but no one moved. They lingered—men who commanded empires, reduced to silence by uncertainty. By a girl. By what had been done to her… and what had been done *because* of her.I let my gaze move over each of them. Adriano—restless, unraveling, guilt etched into every line of his face. Luca—watchful, thinking, trying to piece together what didn’t quite fit. Liam—quiet, contained, but I could see the storm beneath. He carried too much for someone so young.Luigi and Stefano—burdened. Not just by the situation, but by what it meant for the family… for everything we stood for. They were all waiting. Not for answers. For direction. Adriano was the one who broke the silence. “Zia…” he said, voice rough. “I think you should call Denton.”I saw Luigi shift beside me immediately, ready to object. I placed my hand gently over his. “Let him speak, Luigi.”Adriano continued, more certain now. “He quit, Zia. I don’t think he’ll take a call from any of us… but you

AdrianoBreakfast should’ve felt normal. It didn’t.Not with everything sitting between us—unspoken, unresolved, and urgent. I filled them in quickly. The government contact. The shutdown. The call with Mason. The fact that whatever we were dealing with had reach—real reach. That alone darkened the mood at the table. Then my phone rang. Every head turned. I glanced at the screen. “Mason.”Silence fell instantly. I answered and put it on speaker. “Morning, Mace…”“When we spoke last night,” he started, voice tight but charged, “we said maybe we’ve been looking at this wrong.I leaned forward slightly.“We were chasing the kidnapper,” he continued, “but he’s got enough clout to stay hidden. What we *do* know is the blood got handed off to the ambulance. And that ambulance tracked to the truck stop.”My pulse picked up. “So that’s where I focussed.”There was something in his voice. Energy. Excitement. “Spit it out, Mace,” I cut in. “You’re killing us here.”A breath. Then—“I’ve got it.

AdrianoIt was close to 10:30 p.m. when we finally called it.The kind of exhaustion that settles deep into your bones had claimed all of us—but no one wanted to be the first to say it. Not when we were finally getting somewhere.Dad and I walked toward our wing in silence, the weight of the day hanging between us. Behind us, Luca and Liam were slower, their voices carrying up the staircase.“…I’m telling you, she practically tripped over herself—” Luca was saying.“Please,” Liam cut in dryly, “pity we share a birthmark but not all this prettiness.”Luca barked out a laugh and shoulder-checked him. “Fuck off.”They kept going, trading jabs, easy… familiar. Laughing. Something twisted in my chest. I missed that. Missed *him*.And the worst part? The distance between us didn’t feel temporary anymore. It felt like something I had caused. Something I might not be able to fix.I dragged my gaze away and checked my phone. A message from Rigsby. Finally.“Night, Dad,” I muttered.“Goodnight,

LucaWe all just… sat there. No one rushing to speak. No one scrambling to argue. Just absorbing the truth my mother had laid out so cleanly it left nowhere to hide.Denton. Everything pointed to him. And somehow… it didn’t feel wrong.Ma excused herself quietly, like she hadn’t just upended the entire direction of the hunt, and headed toward the kitchen to put together a tray for herself and Adriano—they’d both missed dinner. Dad gathered the empty mugs without a word and followed her.For a moment, it was just us. Me. Adriano. Liam. Zio. And the weight of what came next. Then Liam’s phone rang. He didn’t hesitate. “Jerry… give me something.”He hit speaker. A crackle… then—“Yeah… the video clip you sent—I’ve got some findings you can work with.”Every spine in the room straightened.“First—this unknown guy is big. Tall and built.
