Chapter 4 - Temperature Rising

Liana

As I let myself in, the smell of the motel room hit me.

It smelled like disinfectant and damp carpet, the kind of clean that never quite erased what had been there before.

I parked the cart in a corner, taking out the food and placing on the small counter.

I crossed the room in three quick steps.

Remi was curled on his side, too still.

His normally handsome face was pale except for the hectic splotches of red slashed across his cheeks and brow.

“Hey,” I whispered, brushing my fingers over his forehead.

Too warm.

My chest tightened. “Rem, wake up.”

His lashes fluttered. “You’re back,” he murmured, voice thin but smiling anyway.

“Yes sweets, picked up the cart from Aldo as well”

I reached for the thermometer, already knowing the answer. The number blinked up at me, higher than it had been this morning.

My hands shook as I set it aside. I frowned because it was obvious the fever still persisted.

“That’s not good, is it?” he asked gently, like he was the one comforting me.

“We’ll manage,” I said quickly. “We always do.”

“Upsydozey lazybones, I come bearing food and a treat” I aimed for a cheerful note to cover my concern.

I helped him sit up, propping pillows behind his back.

Fetching the food, I sat on the edge of the bed next to him, dividing the food and and utensils and placing his carefully on his lap.

”Go ahead, dig in…no treat if you don’t eat your dinner first.” I said upbeat.

He smiled wanly but then squinted at the kiddies meal he saw me holding.

“Didn’t want to stuff my face, gotta still perform tonite..” I said quickly.

“I call bullshit…you can eat anyone under the table…” he deadpanned.

I gulped at the accusation. That’s what happens when you are two parts of one whole, it is almost impossible to hoodwink one another…

”Whatevs Mr KnowItAll…you calling me a foodhog now?”

I tried for jocular and he gave a weak laugh that ended up in a coughing fit.

He rubbed his hand over his chest obviously in discomfort.

My heart was torn watching him. If we didn't need the money so desperately, there was no way I would leave him tonight.

He ate slowly, apologetically, as if each bite was a burden.

“By the way, I confirmed tonite’s gig with Rory and told him you were sick. I told him to bring out the piano instead so I can perform solo.”

“What no..” Remi protested…”there is no way that you are going there alone, it’s a freaking Gentlemans club."

"Plus you would be walking there by yourself..”

His lips firmed in a familiar firm line.

“Not to mention that sleazy bastard will shortchange you with pay cos it would be only you and not me..”

I sighed. He was going to be difficult about this.

“Remi, please think about this.*

*It’s the first time we have been given a Friday night gig."

I paused to let that sink in.

*Plus, we only have the room booked for another two nights and its too cold for us to be outside or separated in a shelter. We need funds until you’re better” I tried reasoning.

He slumped back against the pillows, weak and exhausted just from eating and gave a defeated huff.

“Okay but promise me you will call as soon as you reach the Club and Uber back when the gig is done…there is no way you are walking back alone after 12am”

I kissed him quickly on the cheek, relieved that he wasn’t being more difficult.

“Okay dad, will do. Let me clear up here then I’m gonna have a quick shower and set you up with your meds”

I fled the room before he came up with any more objections.

I had a superquick shower, the temperemantal water pressure didn't allow for dawdling.

I put on my better black jeans, long sleeve henley, chunky sweater and black Converses with haste.

That was the last of the baby lotion.

I sighed…I really needed to make some money or the eczema would be back with a vengeance.

But those were luxuries considering we might be homeless in two days.

A spritz of lavender oil spritzed on my wrists and pulse points and I was good to go.

The performance clothes were kept at the Club so my backpack just had my pepper spray, brush, some make up and wipes…

Remi was already half asleep and grumbled when I woke him to take his meds.

His face seemed redder than when I had gone to get ready.

I touched his forehead. That too felt even warmer.

I didn't like this at all. Again something told me not to leave him.

I could feel my eyes welling. It had to be done. We needed a payday.

But whether he grumbled or threw a tantrum, we were going to the clinic tomorrow…

I was not at all happy at his condition, or the wheezy sound of his chest .

The over-the-counter meds were not cutting it.

I pulled the blankets over him and brushed back the damp strands sticking on his forehead.

I placed a gentle kiss on his heated cheek.

“Love you my heart, be back soon” I whispered.

He blinked drowsily…”Love you more Lia” he croaked in response.

Looking at the time on the bedside alarm clock, I grabbed my backpack, a banana and water bottle and the key card and let myself out quietly.

I was still uneasy about leaving him on his own but knew I had no choice.

Sometimes love meant leaving for a little while to ensure we could be together forever.

Liam Maria didn’t raise her voice. She didn’t need to.The room bent toward her anyway. “I believe Denton has Arianna.”The words landed like a detonation—sharp, disorienting, impossible to ignore. A collective intake of breath swept through the room, chairs shifting, tension snapping tight like a wire about to give.Voices started rising immediately—“No—”“That doesn’t make—”“Why the hell would he—”Maria lifted her hand. That was all it took. Silence. Not forced. Not reluctant. Absolute. “Just hear me out,” she said, calm but unyielding. “Then we can debate whatever you think contradicts it.”And just like that… we listened.I leaned back slightly, arms folded, watching her—not just hearing the words, but studying the way she built them. Piece by piece. Brick by brick.“First,” she began, “he knew the location of that safehouse.” A nod here. A tightening jaw there.“Second—we have all agreed that the man who took her knew her… or cared about her." My chest tightened at that. Becau

Maria The ride back felt shorter. Not because the distance had changed… but because something had. There was movement now. Direction. A thread we were finally starting to follow. At one point, I reached over and switched the music again. This time—**Lionel Richie**.Adriano groaned immediately. “Zia… do you know any artists after 2015?”I laughed. Actually laughed. “Good music doesn’t expire,” I told him lightly. But the laughter faded as quickly as it came. Reality always found its way back in. He told me about the conversation he overheard at the front desk. The break-in. The connections forming. And then I told him about Remi. About the bruising. The placement. The timing. “Adriano…” I said quietly, watching the road ahead. “A connection like that… it’s rare.”I paused, letting the memory settle. “Years ago, the night Stefano - your dad was shot… in Chicago mind you - Luigi and I were at a restaurant. We left early because he suddenly clutched his chest, said he felt pain—exactly

DentonThe line clicked once. Secure. Encrypted. Silent for half a beat too long.“Identify,” the voice on the other end said—calm, clipped, authoritative.“Seven-Six,” I replied. “Double zero clearance. Confirm.”A pause. Then: “Confirmed. This is Control—Zero-One.”I exhaled slowly, tension held tight beneath discipline. “I assume you received my request.”“We did. And we’ve acted on it.”“Status.”“Assets have been deployed. Surveillance grids nullified across all known locations..” A faint shuffle of papers. “The girl remains unaccounted for—but we’re closing the net.”“How close?”“Days,” Zero-One said without hesitation. “Everything else is ready. We’re confident she’ll be secured within the next few days.”My jaw tightened. “She needs to be found, too many eyes on this”“We’re aware of the stakes, Seven-Six. You wouldn’t have come to us otherwise.”A brief silence settled between us—mutual understanding, unspoken.“Now,” Zero-One continued, tone shifting slightly, “regarding yo

Remi They had to sedate me. That’s how bad it got. After the dream, after *feeling* her—my readings spiked and refused to come down. Monitors screaming, doctors barking orders. After I flatlined andbthey revived me...the worst was still not over...Then came the call, the Doctors and nurses screaming at my Security. My stats spiking dangerously again. They were forced to sedate me but stood guard like I was about to bolt out of the damn hospital. Now I was lying on my stomach, jaw clenched, while two doctors hovered over me—pressing, checking, muttering under their breath as they examined the bruising across my back and thighs.Bruising that hadn’t been there before. Bruising no one here could explain. A medical mystery they called it. I knew exactly where it came from. I just didn’t say a word. The door opened. I barely turned my head, but I caught Aaron stepping in—with a woman I didn’t recognize. Older. Composed. Not hospital staff.“Remi,” Aaron said carefully, “your Aunt Maria i

AdrianoThe drive to Boston was quiet at first.Zia was like that. She didn’t fill silence just for the sake of it—she *read* it. Knew when words would help… and when they’d just get in the way.Right now… silence was needed. Then—out of nowhere—she reached for the music console. A few clicks. And suddenly—*Celine Dion.*I barked out a laugh before I could stop myself. “Seriously, Zia?”She didn’t even look at me, just adjusted the volume slightly, completely unbothered. “Music for the soul,” she murmured.I shook my head, still smiling despite everything. “You would have loved her,” I said after a moment, my voice softer now. “Arianna. She would fight me for the music every single time.”The smile faded, replaced by something heavier. “But not with Denton,” I added quietly. “Those two… they had their own thing. He’d play something and they’d just—” I exhaled. “Like some silent conversation in the rearview mirror.”I swallowed hard. “In five years… I’ve never seen that man smile as mu

AdrianoLunch had come and gone in a blur. Too quiet. Too controlled. Like everyone was holding themselves together by sheer will.I passed the information Liam had given us to my government contact—kept it brief, precise. Now it was a waiting game. And I hated waiting.By the time I got to the study at 2pm, my father, Zio, and Zia were already there. Seated. Composed. Watching. It was odd to see my Zia there, but her presence was grounding. I took my seat, ignoring the pull of bruised muscle and the deeper ache sitting in my chest. The door opened behind me.Luca and Liam walked in together. Still strange to see. Still wrong in every way. But I kept that to myself.“I believe there has been some progress since earlier,” my father said. “Report.”Luca went first. “Mason has narrowed it down to five possible vehicles,” he said. “We caught a break with the dashcam—he’s analysing it now to eliminate the other four.”A nod from the seniors. “What else?” my father prompted.Liam stepped i
