***** SORA: “Fifty-dollar deposit.” I repeated the words, my chest tightening so hard I could barely breathe. “What do you mean I need to deposit fifty dollars before you treat my daughter?” The doctor barely glanced at me. “I don’t make the rules,” he said, turning back to the files in front of him. “Hospital policy. No deposit, no treatment.” “But she’s really sick,” I said, desperation creeping into my voice as I tightened my grip on my daughter. “She’s burning up. She’s been throwing up and can’t keep anything down. Can’t you at least check her first?” He sighed as if I were wasting his time. “Sir, there are other patients waiting. Since it’s obvious you can’t afford the deposit, maybe you should look for a public clinic.” “This is a public clinic!” I yelled before I could stop myself. He shot me a sharp look. “Watch your tone,” he said coldly, his eyes empty. “Fifty dollars or you leave. Your choice.” My hands began to shake. Beauty whimpered softly in my arms, her body frighteningly hot. Seeing her like that shattered me even more. She was all I had, the only family I had ever known and I couldn’t lose her. I couldn’t. “I’ll pay,” I said quickly. “I’ll pay.” I dug into my bag and pulled out crumpled bills. It was the money I’d been saving for our food for the week. I counted it more than twice. It was everything I had. As I handed it over, my heart sank. The moment the money left my hand, panic crept in. How were we going to survive now? Snap out of it, Sora. Beauty came first. “Please,” I said quietly. “Help her.” They took Beauty from my arms, and she clung weakly to my shirt, her fingers trembling. “Papa,” she whispered. “I’m here, princess,” I said, forcing my voice steady. “I’m not going anywhere.” The door closed behind her, leaving me alone in the waiting room. The silence pressed down on me as I paced back and forth, restless and terrified. I prayed to the Goddess with everything in me because the thought of losing Beauty was unbearable. Time dragged painfully slow, every second stretching until my chest hurt. After that night on the ship with that strange Alpha, a couple of weeks went by… and not long before I found out I was pregnant with my daughter. I was so scared, but at the same time so happy. I’d always been all alone, and with her I knew I was never going to feel that way again. When the doctor finally returned, my heart slammed against my ribs. “She has a very high fever,” he said nonchalantly. “Dangerously high, but we managed to bring it down.” Relief hit me so hard my knees almost buckled. “So she’s going to be okay, right?” He didn’t answer, his attention fixed on her chart. “She hasn’t been eating well?” he asked absently. “No,” I replied quietly, shame burning through me. Parents were supposed to provide for their children, and I couldn’t even give mine proper food. “That’s what I thought,” he said, finally meeting my gaze. “We’re starting fluids and medication immediately.” I barely had time to breathe before he continued. “She’ll need multiple drips, injections, and medications. She’ll be staying overnight, and your deposit won’t even cover half of it.” The world tilted beneath my feet. “So what do you suggest I do?” I asked desperately. He shrugged, disgust flickering across his face. “If you really want your daughter treated, you’ll find the rest of the money. It’s that simple.” “I have nowhere to get it,” I pleaded. “If you send her away, she won’t make it.” He studied me for a moment before speaking. “There is another way to pay off the bill, if you’re willing.” “I am,” I said instantly, not thinking twice. “Whatever it is, I’ll do it.” A slow, satisfied smile crept onto his lips. “The clinic staff are having a small get-together. We need someone to wash the dishes.” A dull ache spread through my hands at the thought, but I nodded. “Show me to the kitchen.” When I got there, my stomach dropped. The sink was overflowing with heaps of dishes, far more than I could count. And he had called it a small get-together. Without realizing it, I rubbed the back of my neck where the mating mark still burned faintly. I hated my life, but I hated the Alpha who had marked me even more. I stepped in front of the sink. The moment my hands touched the cold water, a shiver ran through my body. I wasn’t doing this for anyone but my daughter. I shut my thoughts down and worked. Six hours passed, the dishes never seeming to end. By the time I finished, it was 5 a.m. My body felt hollow, like I was already dead. I dragged myself to Beauty’s room, every step heavy. She was sleeping peacefully, color slowly returning to her face. I felt like a walking corpse. Just as I was about to rest, a nurse walked in and handed me a paper. “What’s this?” I asked. “A discharge form,” she said. “Sign it.” I did. “You’re both free to leave.” “Right now?” I asked weakly. “It’s almost 5 a.m.” “You’ve been discharged,” she replied flatly. “You have to leave.” I stood there frozen for a moment before carefully lifting Beauty into my arms. I wasn’t sure I had the strength to make it home. But I did. I entered our small, cramped room, laid Beauty gently on the bed, and collapsed beside her. I felt like dying. Maybe death would finally bring me a little peace.DAMIEN. Zane trailed behind him, moving at a more relaxed pace, and one hand in his pocket. “Sora, breathe. They're fine. They won't hurt themselves and even if they do they'll get over it.”That was definitely not what Sora was seeing while he tried to capture one of the miscreants. “They are not fine. They are little menaces,” Sora said, getting help from Zane to chase after them.I was smiling at this sight when Beauty appeared from the top of the stairs. Eleven going on twelve, and wearing a comfortable dress of yellow color and her blonde hair messed up from whatever the heck she had been doing previously. The older she got, the more handful she became. Her eyes searched the room as a routine—but fixed on the little redhead standing next to me.The expression of the girl changed instantly. Her eyes softened and got larger, they always were like that when she spotted some things she wanted to hug on sight. I moved my mouth closer to Raymond’s ear and whispered, “She will have a
DAMIEN. I was sitting in the back of that black car and surfing through different flower arrangements on my tablet computer. Being an owner of a floral shop and a wedding planning business I started each day dealing with colors, flower deliveries and brides having a crisis. But today it seemed to be a normal working day until we came to a complete halt.I raised my head and saw a row of cars with nobody moving at all."What is happening?" I asked the driver."Sir, there is an accident up ahead. It looks pretty bad." It was something in his voice that made me put the tablet aside and open the door while he tried to hold me from doing that. I found myself in a crowd of people who were standing around trying to look closer at what was going on. After several apologies to people blocking my way I managed to see the picture. The car was on its side with broken parts scattered on the asphalt. Two bodies covered with white sheets lay nearby and blood spots spread on the road. But the mos
DAMIEN. A Few Months LaterThe church appeared like a dream.Golden rays fell through high windows of stained glasses and lit up the marbled floor with warm patches of light. The rows of white roses and lush greens of flower arrangements decorated every pew. The air was scented with the freshness of flowers, wax and the smell of polished wood. I was standing at the altar wearing my perfectly fitted black suit, feeling my heart beating faster than ever in all fights and arguments. In front of me, Raymond looked so good he was almost distracting me from saying anything I planned to say. He kept looking at me with soft eyes.In the front row, Charles was sitting next to Martin who held his shoulders in a protective embrace. Charles was noticeably plumpier and smiled softly in his formal suit, and it was almost impossible not to notice the swell in his belly. He was glowing with health and slightly uncomfortable, his hand gently holding the bulge while Martin was whispering into his ear
DAMIEN. Raymond stood with his arms crossed in the doorway of the old room. “We have to get our packing done. The moving team will be here on the weekend.” I folded the shirt again. “Postpone it. For just a little while. Cole needs me.” “He has Adam to look out for him. You have me and that means you should be worried about us leaving and not bugging them twenty four seven.” “Adam is good for certain things,” I said dismissively, “but Cole is my brother. It is more important.” Raymond raised his eyebrow. “You are stalling.” “I am taking care of my family first. Is there a problem with that?”He sighed. "It's like seeing the demon incarnated before my very eyes." Not bothered with his reaction, Raymond grinned madly, shaking his head and looking back at me. “And what am I?”I frowned. He asked me a trick question. So, is that what you are trying to do? “My future husband, that is not my family yet.”“You are being a brat.” “Oh, really?” I exclaimed, shocked, placing my h
DAMIEN. I was waiting outside the hospital room with my arms crossed and tapping my foot on the smooth floor. Raymond was standing there quietly in his usual way and not saying anything much. Every time the door handle turned a little bit, I would look up. Waiting made me sick in my stomach and not knowing made it even worse. I was in a foul mood and half afraid too. Cole was looking so pale the other day, and the whole issue of the pregnancy made me feel ill inside.Adam came out of the room first followed by Cole. Cole looked tired and pale but he was able to walk. I felt so relieved that I started walking towards them. Before I reached them, I felt Raymond’s hand on my wrist. “Give him some space.” Since when did he know what I needed to do? Fine, he was right most of the time but not at this moment. I moved to protest, but the look in Raymond’s eyes silenced the words before they could form. Instead, I stood watching as Adam led Cole down the hall to the private exit. There w
ADAM. The text from Damien came right when I was going over the quarterly reports.I looked at it, finger poised over the screen, and almost deleted the message before reading it. Damien was known for sending over-dramatic messages about nothing, but today seemed to be dragging on. I flipped my phone upside down and tried to get my attention back on the figures on my desk. “I see you getting a message.” Zane broke into my reverie with that deep voice of his. I looked up, saw Zane staring at me above his laptop, his expression calm but curious in that way he always was when I was doing something wrong. “Damien,” I said to answer his question. “Tell me to go to the family hospital.” “Why does he need you there?” Zane asked, and I saw his hands freeze on the keyboard. “Ask him.”I took my phone and messaged him again. “What's wrong?”He was quick, typing back. “It’s about Cole.” I repeated the words like a robot half minded with worry. Zane sprang to his feet. "What happened
