CELLA'S POV

He stood in the hallway like a man who had just watched his entire world collapse.

His hair was disheveled, his shirt untucked, his eyes wild with something I'd never seen in them before. Panic. Raw, unfiltered panic.

"Please," he said again. "Don't leave."

I clutched my bag tighter, my knuckles white against the fabric. "You don't get to ask me that."

"I know."

"You don't get to stand there and pretend you care. Not when you've been lying to me this whole time."

"I never lied to yo

  • Marked by the forbidden mate   CHAPTER 20: WHAT THE MOON DID NOT SANCTION

AEDEN'S POVThe demon king's laughter followed us all the way to the door."Run, hybrid," he called after us, his voice stretching and warping through the void like something spoken underwater. "Run home with your prize. It changes nothing. The bond you fought so hard to save was never yours to keep. It was always mine to finish."I didn't answer him. I didn't have the strength to answer him. I had Cella's hand locked in mine, and the silver door was ahead of us, and every part of me that still functioned as a man rather than a wound was pouring itself into the single act of not letting go of her."You think this ends with a door," the voice continued, closer now, close enough that I felt it more than heard it, a pressure behind my eyes, behind my teeth. "It doesn't end. It begins. The child is already marked. The child is already mine. You can drag her body out of my court, but you cannot drag out what's growing inside it.""Don't listen to him," Cella said, her fingers tightening ar

  • Marked by the forbidden mate   CHAPTER 19: THE DESCENT

AEDEN'S POVFor three days I did not sleep.I sat beside her, watching the slow rise and fall of her chest, counting each breath like it might be the last one I ever witnessed. The healers had stopped coming after the second day. There was nothing left for them to do. Her body was warm. Her heart still beat. But when I reached for her through the bond, there was only silence where her voice used to be.Not absence. Silence is not the same as absence. Absence would have meant she was gone. This was worse. This was a door closed and locked from the other side, and I could hear her fists against it if I pressed my palm flat to my chest and listened hard enough. Faint. Frantic. Fading.I was not going to sit here and watch that fading become nothing. On the fourth night, I stood."Where are you going?" The voice came from the doorway. Mira, the healer's apprentice, the only one who still checked on us out of something that might have been pity."To find someone who owes me a debt older th

  • Marked by the forbidden mate   CHAPTER 18: THE RETURN

CELLA'S POVThe Wolf Realm looked exactly as I remembered it.Dark forests. Imposing mountains. The ever-present weight of tradition pressing down on everything like a physical force. But something felt different now.Maybe it was the bond, humming beneath my skin like a second heartbeat. Maybe it was the knowledge of everything I'd learned, the curse, the prophecy, the truth about my mother and the demon king. Maybe it was simply the fact that I was no longer the same person who had fled these lands months ago.I was stronger now. Wiser. More dangerous. And I was terrified."Are you sure about this?" Aeden's voice came from beside me, low and steady. "We can still turn back."I shook my head. "No. We can't. This is the only way.""It's not the only way. It's just the way you've chosen."I turned to look at him. He was standing in the shadow of a massive oak, his amber eyes scanning the treeline with the vigilance of a soldier. He'd insisted on coming with me, despite my protests. Des

  • Marked by the forbidden mate   CHAPTER 17: THE BARGAIN

AEDEN'S POVShe was already gone.I could see it in the way she held herself, the careful distance she'd been maintaining since Mira's revelation. Three days of silence. Three days of watching her retreat into herself, building walls I couldn't breach.I should have said something sooner. I should have pushed. But I'd been lost too, drowning in the truth about Lyra's murder, and by the time I surfaced, Cella had already slipped away. Now she was standing by the window of the tiny apartment we'd rented, her silhouette outlined against the city lights, and I knew with a certainty that turned my blood cold. She was leaving."When were you going to tell me?" I asked. She didn't turn. "Tell you what?""That you've already decided to go back."A long pause. Then she let out a breath, slow and shaky."You're right," she said. "I am."I felt something inside me crack."Did you even plan to say goodbye? Or were you just going to disappear in the middle of the night like I was nothing?""I'm no

  • Marked by the forbidden mate   Chapter 16: The Ghost of Lyra

AEDEN'S POVThe name haunted me.Lyra.Every time I closed my eyes, I saw her face. Her smile. The way she'd looked at me on our wedding day, like I was the center of her universe. And then I saw her body. Cold. Still. The life drained from her eyes.I'd spent five years searching for answers. Five years chasing shadows and whispers and half-truths. Five years convincing myself that if I just found the right clue, the right piece of the puzzle, everything would make sense. But it never did.Until now."Thorne said there's something I need to see," I told Cella as we made our way through the narrow streets of a human city I'd never visited before. "Something about Lyra."Cella's hand tightened around mine. "Are you sure you're ready for this?""No. But I need to know the truth. I've been running from it for too long."She didn't argue. She just walked beside me, her presence steady and warm, anchoring me to the present. The building was nondescript.A plain brick facade, a faded sign,

  • Marked by the forbidden mate   Chapter 15: The Ashes of Refuge

CELLA'S POVThe weeks that followed were the happiest of my life.I know that sounds strange, given everything we'd been through. The running. The hiding. The constant fear of being found. But in that small hut at the edge of the world, with Aeden beside me, I felt something I'd never felt before.Peace.We woke together each morning, his arms wrapped around me, his breath warm against my neck. We ate simple meals, bread and cheese and wild berries, and talked about everything and nothing. We walked through the village, learning the names and stories of the people who had made this place their home. And at night, we lay together, our bodies tangled, our hearts beating in time."I never thought I could have this," I said one evening, my head resting on his chest. "A home. A future. Someone who loves me.""Neither did I." His fingers traced lazy patterns on my arm. "I spent so long running from everything. From my past. From my pain. From the possibility of being happy.""And now?"He t

  • Marked by the forbidden mate   Chapter 6: The Voice

CELLA'S POV"I reject the bond." My voice shook, but I forced myself to continue. "I reject you as my mate. I refuse to be tied to an omega. I refuse to accept this... this fate."The bond pulled at my chest, screaming in protest. Sable howled inside my mind, her claws raking against my ribs until

  • Marked by the forbidden mate   CHAPTER 5: BEHIND ME

CELLA'S POV"I am answering it. By surviving." He started walking, and I had no choice but to follow or be left behind. "I'm someone who knows how to stay alive. CELLA'S POVOmega. The word echoed in my skull like a death knell.I stared at the stranger, my mate, as he bowed and scraped before the armored guards, his voice taking on a pathetic, stumbling quality that made my stomach turn."A simpleton?" one of the guards sneered, circling him like a predato

  • Marked by the forbidden mate   Chapter 3

CELLA'S POV"Don't let go," the voice came out again, but this time it was strained.“My eyes flew open. I couldn’t see who it was.
