The private corridor leading to the executive lounges was silent, lined with heavy tapestries that muffled the orchestra in the main ballroom.

Two guard dogs, Arthur’s personal security, stood outside the mahogany doors of the private suite. As Evelyn approached, their hands moved instinctively toward their jackets.

“Miss King,” one of them said, recognizing her.

“This is Mr. Vance’s private lounge. No guests are permitted.”

“Tell him Evelyn King is here to discuss the 2012 offshore restructuring logs and the real reason his wife’s estate was never fully liquidated,” Evelyn said, her voice steady, dropping the names like silent explosives.

The guard blinked, his stoic expression cracking for a fraction of a second. He tapped his earpiece, spoke in a low murmur, and listened for a moment. Then, he silently opened the door and stepped aside. Evelyn walked in.

The lounge was dimly lit, smelling of old leather, tobacco, and a sharp scent of cedarwood. Arthur Vance sat in a high-backed leather armchair, a crystal tumbler of scotch resting loosely in his hand. He hadn't taken off his tuxedo jacket, but he looked completely at ease, a wolf resting in a cage of his own making. He didn't stand when she entered. He looked up, his gray eyes pinning her to the spot with the weight of a physical interrogation.

“You have exactly two minutes, Miss King,” Arthur said. His voice was a deep, gravelly baritone that seemed to vibrate in the quiet room.

“Before I have my men throw you out of this building, and before I personally ensure a thorough audit of your father’s remaining shipping lanes.”

Evelyn didn't flinch. She walked forward, the silk of her emerald dress rustling softly against the thick Persian rug, and stopped exactly three feet from his chair.

“Your son is planning to announce our engagement in fifteen minutes,” she stated clearly.

Arthur took a slow sip of his scotch.

“I am aware. Julian is an idiot who believes a marriage alliance with the King family will secure his position on the board. He is mistaken. But his mistakes do not concern me.”

“He isn't your son, Arthur.”

The silence that followed her words was deafening. The air in the room grew heavy, suffocatingly tense. Arthur did not move a muscle. He didn't drop his glass, he didn't gasp, he didn't narrow his eyes. But the sheer volume of lethal intent that suddenly radiated from his posture made Evelyn’s instinct scream at her to turn and run.

“Careful, girl,” Arthur said, his voice dropping an octave, becoming dangerously quiet.

“You are playing with things that can make you disappear.”

“In 2008, your late wife, Eleanor, transferred forty million dollars to a shell corporation registered in the Cayman Islands under the name 'C.H. Legacy,'”

Evelyn said, her words rapid but precise, pulling directly from the memories of the hidden ledger she had memorized in her past life.

“Chloe Henderson’s father owns that corporation. It wasn't an investment. It was hush money. Eleanor was paying them to hide the DNA results from the Vance board. Julian is the biological son of Thomas Henderson. Julian knows this. Chloe knows this. And they are currently using my family’s trust to fund the final buyout of your remaining shares so they can depose you from your own company the moment Julian turns thirty-five.”

Arthur slowly set his glass down on the table. He stood up. The sheer height of him was staggering.

He towered over Evelyn, casting a long shadow that completely swallowed her. He walked toward her, his steps slow and deliberate, until he was standing so close she could feel the heat radiating from his chest. He reached out, his large, calloused hand gripping her chin, forcing her face upward. His thumb pressed against her jawline, not hard enough to bruise, but with an absolute, unyielding authority.

“Who gave you this information?” Arthur demanded, his gray eyes searching her face with a terrifying, predatory intelligence.

“My own investigators haven't been able to crack the Cayman accounts yet. How does a twenty-four-year-old socialite who spends her days at charity luncheons know the exact name of Eleanor’s shell company?”

“It doesn't matter how I know,” Evelyn gasped out, her heart pounding against her ribs, but her gaze remained fierce, locked onto his.

“What matters is that I have the keys to destroy them. Julian wants to use me to ruin you. I want to use you to destroy him.”

Arthur’s eyes narrowed, a flicker of genuine curiosity breaking through his icy facade. “You are his fiancée.”

“I'm nothing to him.” She spat, her voice laced with a raw, visceral hatred that made Arthur’s grip slacken slightly.

“He is a snake. And I am going to cut off his head.”

Arthur released her chin, stepping back a single pace, his eyes tracing the fierce line of her posture, the emerald dress, the cold fire burning in her eyes.

He had spent years investigating his own family, tracking the rot that Eleanor had left behind, knowing Julian was a fraud but lacking the final piece of definitive, legally binding evidence to strip him of the legacy corporate charter without causing a massive stock collapse.

“And what, exactly, are you proposing, Miss King?” Arthur asked, a faint, dangerous amusement playing at the corner of his mouth.

“You want me to cut off his allowance? You want me to expose his illegitimacy tonight?”

“No,” Evelyn said, straightening her spine, her voice ringing out like a silver bell in the quiet room.

“If you expose him tonight, the board will panic, the stocks will drop, and his mother’s faction will tie you up in litigation for a decade. You need a stable transition of power. You need a partner who holds the King family’s twenty percent voting block.”

She took a deep breath, delivering the strike she had died to give.

“I want you to marry me.”

Arthur froze.

For the first time since she had entered the room, the great Arthur Vance looked genuinely caught off guard. He stared at her, his mind processing the sheer, audacious madness of her words.

“You want to marry me,” he repeated, as if testing the weight of the words. “Your fiancé’s father.”

My ex-fiancé’s father,” Evelyn corrected him sharply.

“Think about it,” Arthur. The corporate charter states that Julian will receive the grandfathered shares only if he marries a woman of equal aristocratic standing or if the patriarch establishes a new direct line of succession through a legitimate marriage.

“If you marry me, my family’s voting block merges with yours. You control eighty percent of the empire. Julian becomes completely irrelevant. He becomes nothing more than an employee you can fire at your leisure.”

She took a step closer, her voice dropping to a seductive, lethal whisper. “Imagine his face. Imagine the absolute, paralyzing horror of the man who thought he was going to rule the world, realizing that the woman he tried to manipulate is now the ultimate authority in his life. The man who tried to destroy your legacy will have to bow to me. He will have to call me 'Mother.' “

Back in the private war room on the eighty-eighth floor of Vance Global Tower, the room was a storm of flashing red light and mechanical activity.Evelyn stood directly before the wall, completely motionless as the red numbers reflected in her dark pupils."Mrs. Vance!" Murdock called out, his hands slamming against his desk. "The bank just issued Thomas Henderson a nine-hundred-million-dollar emergency margin call! He has forty-five minutes to deposit liquid cash, or they will begin liquidating his collateral shares!""Has he attempted to cover?" Evelyn asked, her voice completely calm."Yes!" a financial analyst shouted. "Thomas is using his family’s private reserve accounts to buy back HNDR shares on the open market to artificially push the price back up above thirty-eight dollars! He’s spent three hundred million in the last ten minutes!"Evelyn’s lips curved into a beautiful arc. "He is walking directly into the trap," she whispered. She turned her head slightly toward the screen

The morning rain slammed against the floor-to-ceiling glass of the eighty-eighth floor in dark sheets.Inside the private suite of Vance Global Tower, the air was dead silent.Evelyn sat at the center of the table. On the glass surface before her lay a legal envelope bearing the red wax seal of the Supreme Court, Commercial Division."It was delivered twenty minutes ago," Murdock, Arthur’s chief financial strategist, said flatly, standing at the edge of the table, flanked by three senior financial analysts."Thomas Henderson spent a lot of cash to file this," Murdock continued, adjusting his glasses. "He is petitioning the court to place the King family's twenty percent voting block into temporary judicial receivership until your father’s medical capacity can be formally evaluated by an independent psychiatric board. It is a classic stall tactic. If he gets a temporary restraining order before Monday, the King vote is frozen."Evelyn did not touch the paper. She slowly leaned back in

Evelyn walked around the house, her heels clicking softly against the floor. She didn't look at Selene or Lily, but she felt their eyes burning into her back like hot irons. As her gaze swept over the archways, the subtle shifts in her childhood home became instantly clear. An antique grandfather clock that her father had imported was gone, replaced by a replica. A mirror along the gallery wall had been taken down, leaving dark, rectangular shadows on the wallpaper."Miss Evelyn..."A soft, trembling voice broke through the heavy silence. From the archway leading to the kitchen, Martha, her family's old housekeeper, stepped out. She looked exhausted. Her hands folded tightly over her apron, eyes filled with tears the moment she saw Evelyn standing under the chandelier."Martha," Evelyn said, her cold demeanor softening for a second. She reached out, placing her hand over the woman's trembling knuckles."How... How have you been, child?”She cast a fearful glance toward Selene. "The re

The second the door clicked, the tears vanished from Chloe’s eyes as if they had never existed. The trembling curve of her mouth flattened into a hard, vicious snarl. Her face twisted into an expression of pure malice. She slammed both palms flat against the vanity, her knuckles turning white as she stared at her own reflection."You arrogant bitch!”She reached down, her nails digging into the leather of her clutch to pull out her phone. Her hands vibrating with an explosive rage. She tapped the screen, opening a hidden communication log."Enjoy the while you can, Evelyn," Chloe whispered into the screen, her mouth curling back into a deadly smile.Back in the main pavilion of the Lounge, Evelyn walked toward the central circular booth. The ladies instantly stopped whispering the moment her shadow fell across the table. She did not rush. Her heels struck the floor with a loud click, like the ticking of a countdown clock. She stood against the dim background of the entryway, her shoulders back, her eyes scanning the room with absolute authority. The breath died in Chloe’s throat.Evelyn was wearing the dress. The dress.Evelyn walked directly toward the central booth. Without asking for permission, she elegantly took her seat at the table, her movements graceful and utterly queenly. As she sat under the direct light of the pavilion, the comparison between the two women was cruel. The fabric of Chloe’s gown, which had looked so elegant a moment ago, suddenly revealed itself for what it truly was.The girls around the table looked from Chloe to Evelyn, their eyes wide with shock. Victoria Sterling swallowed hard, clearing her throat to break the suffocating silence."Evelyn," Victoria stammered, trying to regain her sharp edge. "We... we were just admiring your gown. The ping from her phone carried a rhythmic vibration that pulsed against the desk in Evelyn’s new executive suite. She let the screen flash three times, the bright white banner cutting through the office's dim, elegant lighting. Evelyn slowly leaned back in her chair, her eyes narrowing as she stared at the screen. A cold ache rippled through her chest—not of fear, but of an old disgust. She remembered this invitation. In her previous life, this exact get-together had been the staging ground for her absolute humiliation. In that life, Julian had walked into the dressing room of their penthouse three hours before the event, holding a wrapped white box. He had kissed her forehead with that sweet warmth she had once mistaken for love, telling her he had bought her a dress, one he had carefully handpicked. As his wife, she had trusted him. She had worn it proudly, ignoring the way the lace scratched the skin of her collarbone, and the way the zipper caught against the lining. When she h
