Julia stared at the man in front of her. He'd recognized her, and for some reason, that embarrassed her. What would he think of her?

“Hello.” she finally said.

“Good afternoon,” he replied. “Julia, right?”

He already knew her name. A puzzled look crossed Julia's face.

"I heard your date call you Julia," he said, gesturing toward the restaurant. "So... Julia? I'm guessing that's your name.”

That's how he knew her name. She'd almost thought he was a creep who had been stalking her.

Adrian's gaze met Julia's as he opened his bedroom door. His brows drew together. "You shouldn't be here at this time," he said. "I needed to know something," she said, her arms folded across her chest. He leaned against the doorframe. "What?" She met his eyes without hesitation. "Who is Katie?" For the first time that evening, Adrian's expression shifted. It was brief. Barely noticeable. But Julia caught it. He looked away first, his eyes fixed on the hinge of the bedroom door. "Why do you ask?" "Because Jake seemed determined to warn me about her. About you, rather." Silence settled between them. "Katie is part of my past. That's all you need to know," he said, stepping back into the bedroom. Julia hesitated for only a second before following him inside. She walked towards the bed and sat at the edge as she watched him carefully. Adrian turned to face her, slight confusion clouding his expression. He was stunned at how comfortable Julia had decided to get despite t

"How long have you guys known each other?" Jake asked.Adrian noticed Julia's posture tense at the question. "Three years," Adrian replied as he took Julia's hand in his and gave it an affectionate squeeze, causing Julia's eyes to widen for the briefest moment before she regained her composure. "Three years?" Jake repeated. "That's a long time ago. Wasn't that when you left Katie? Poor girl."Adrian suppressed a sigh, clearly irritated by Jake's antics. "That's not something we should be discussing.""Oh, really? Why not? You don't want her to know, do you?" Jake asked, resting his elbows on the dinner table.Adrian tapped a finger lightly against the table."Julia, do you know?" Jake asked, his gaze settling on Julia."I'm afraid I don't know what you're talking about," Julia responded. "Come on, Dri. You're gonna do the same thing to her, aren't you?""Why is Jake even here?" Adrian asked his father. There was silence at the table. Aunt Janet and Brenda sat quietly, neither of t

"Dri, honey, you're home," a warm and soft voice said, breaking the tension that had settled over the room.A woman who looked like an older version of Brenda stood in the doorway leading to the living room."Hi, Aunt Janet. Does everyone have to keep calling me Dri?" he teased before adding, "How have you been?"He greeted her with a hug and a light kiss on the cheek. "Oh, please. You'll always be Dri to us. Your father told me about your upcoming promotion and the handover. I'm proud of you.""Thank you, Aunt Janet," Adrian replied. He made his way into the living room and nodded slightly at his father, who returned the greeting before heading upstairs to his bedroom. The moment he stepped into his bedroom, the tension in his shoulders eased as he peeled off his clothes. He couldn't help wondering why Jake had chosen tonight of all nights to show up—and why his father hadn't warned him.Shaking the thought off, he walked into the bathroom and ran the shower, letting the cold water

  • Married to Mr. Hayes… Again   Chapter 17: A Familiar Enemy

At exactly one-thirty that afternoon, Sebastian, Adrian's assistant, arrived at the Hayes estate. Adrian sat on the couch in the main wing's living room, reviewing legal documents for the meeting later that afternoon. His laptop rested open on the coffee table in front of him. The sounds of approaching footsteps caused him to lift his head. "Good afternoon, sir," Sebastian said as he stepped into the living room. Sebastian had been Adrian's best friend since high school. They had attended the same college overseas, and Adrian later invited him to work alongside him at Hayes Pharma & Biotech. Sebastian stood nearly as tall as Adrian, with light brown hair and dimples on both cheeks. He had a boyish charm that contrasted with Adrian's more mature features. "Seb, how are you?" he responded, a smile playing across his face. "I'm good, Dri. How's the wife?" Sebastian asked with a mischievous wink. Adrian managed a small smile. "She arrived this morning. She's down in her room, as

Adrian sat behind his desk, acquisition documents spread across its polished surface. He had spent the morning reviewing them and had a conference meeting scheduled for two that afternoon. He leaned back in his chair, fatigue settling over him. An empty teacup and plate sat on the breakfast tray beside him. For a fleeting moment, his thoughts wandered to Julia. They had been married for less than twenty-four hours. He was certain she'd play the role of his wife well. He heard a light knock on the door of his study. "Come in," he answered. The butler, Henri Blanc, stepped in dressed in a suit—his regular uniform. "Good morning, Master Adrian. I see you've already been served breakfast. Mrs. Hayes is on her way to the estate." Adrian paused. Mrs. Hayes. He was going to have to get used to that. "Thank you, Henri. Have Grace make sure everything is in place ahead of her arrival." "She's on it, sir." "Good." "Your assistant, Mr. Sebastian, called. He said he'd be here by on

Julia slipped into her room and shut the door behind her with more force than she intended. She sat at the foot of her bed thinking of what to do next.Adrian had told her someone would be here by ten tomorrow morning to take her to the Hayes estate. She wondered whether it resembled her father's mansion—or if it was even grander. She had spent most of her life here and wasn't sure what it would be like living outside Reid Mansion. She'd find out tomorrow. Now, she needed to pack. She got up and walked to her closet, her gaze sweeping over the room. She didn't have a lot of items, thankfully. She mostly had work clothes, lounge sets, and pajamas. Her shoe collection was also minimal—three pairs of sneakers, two pairs of loafers, and two pairs of heels. Her life revolved around her research, so she only ever needed to go to the lab or attend a conference. For the daughter of one of the city's wealthiest families, she owned surprisingly few clothes. Her walk-in closet was practically
