Chapter 2

作者: Nora Blythe
Ever since ruining my health, I had to rely on specific targeted medication every day to stay alive. The medication was incredibly expensive. However, stopping the medication would be akin to giving up on my life.

I recalled the past when Stella first learned about my condition. She'd reacted as though the sky had fallen as she knelt before the doctor, begging him to save my life.

The moment she learned about the existence of the targeted medication for my treatment, she said, "Noah, I swear to God that I will never give up on you! We'll continue with your treatment no matter how expensive it gets!"

But now, the cheap medicine box lay before me in the bag like a joke.

I inhaled deeply and swallowed the metallic taste of blood welling in my throat. Then, I grabbed my phone and sent my doctor a text message.

"I've decided to give up on my treatment, Dr. Peterson."

Stella seemed to have disappeared from the face of the earth for the following week. I also stopped staring at her text messaging window like I always used to, waiting for her replies that never came.

I was quite content with the peace and quiet I had at home without her around.

Some days later, she seemed to have finally remembered about my existence and came home to bring me over to her parents' for the family dinner.

"Can't you put in some effort to perk up and make yourself look more spirited? What's with you always looking so sickly like this? You look like bad luck."

She wouldn't stop nagging at me while tugging at my necktie in a dissatisfied manner. This was the first time that I'd found her nagging actually annoying and ear-piercing.

I shoved her hand away as she tried to redo my necktie and caught sight of the shocked look in her eyes.

"Well then, that's on the person who thinks I'm bad luck," I said rather self-deprecatingly before stepping aside.

I walked into her parents' apartment building first, with her coming in after me much later. Her footsteps were hurried as she kept her eyes trained on me.

"You're still mad, aren't you? I'd already given you a whole week to cool off, and you're still holding a grudge against me? Must you force me to apologize in your face before you're finally happy with it?"

I sighed softly and felt my heart hurting, quite literally.

"I'm not mad."

Stella looked at me doubtfully. However, her attention was diverted very soon.

She'd told me that it was a family dinner, but I didn't know why Damon ended up being there as well. He was getting along with Stella's parents like a house on fire.

Yet, the moment they saw that I'd arrived, the warmth died down, and the atmosphere turned awkward.

Stella seemed to forget about everything unpleasant as soon as she saw Damon. She went over and sat down right next to him at the table without a second thought. I hesitated for a second before taking the seat the farthest away from her.

"Since everyone's here, we're going to be frank about things right now," Stella's parents, Perry Nielson and Kate White, said, before turning to look at me.

"Stella, we'll set the date for your engagement to Damon for the 15th of this month."

My hands froze mid-air as I was reaching for the table salt. Then, I looked up and met Stella's eyes straight-on. She averted her eyes in guilt and lowered her head without another word.

"Noah, I know that you've been good to my daughter over the years, but your illness won't be getting any better, and you're only going to be a burden to Stella.

"If you really loved her, you should leave on your own. Stella doesn't have the time and energy to be taking care of you all the time!"

I knew what Perry and Kate would be telling me before I came here. They had always looked down on me. However, they finally agreed to let Stella and me date until today because she was head-over-heels in love with me.

I tried proving my love to Stella by using all of my connections to set her up with clients and suppliers, bringing her to drinking parties and such for her to network with the people there. However, that also meant that I was constantly drinking on her behalf, which took a toll on my health.

I nearly gave up my life helping Stella get to where she was today, being the CEO of her own company. Yet, I didn't ask for a single share from her. My only request was that she marry me in the end.

However, ever since my health began to fail, the topic of our marriage kept being put off and delayed.

At first, it was Perry and Kate who opposed the idea of it. Then, Stella also kept coming up with excuses to postpone the discussion.

Ultimately, they just thought that I was a burden to them.

"I never looked down on you!" Stella exclaimed. "I only switched out your medication because the one you were on had terrible side effects! I couldn't bear to see you throw up every day until you were unable to sleep at night from the pain. That's the only reason I switched it to a milder one!"And it wasn't that I didn't want to lend you the 15,000 dollars! I was just scared that you would use the money to buy more of those self-destructing medications for yourself. I didn't want you to become dependent on them!"I don't know what Damon said to you, but the only person I have ever loved is you!"As she finished speaking, she looked up at my expressionless face and hesitated. Her gaze then fell on Audrey next to me."Or, is it that you're leaving me because you've fallen for someone else? You're leaving together with her, aren't you?"Stella would rather hear me say that I'd fallen for someone else than believe that I didn't love her anymore. After all, she had always been a proud

"You have always been the person I'd loved from the very start! I only want to marry you!" Stella exclaimed, looking straight into my eyes.I could feel the love hidden within her eyes. A sudden sharp pain shot through my chest, and I suddenly felt my throat itch.I avoided her gaze and coughed lightly a couple of times."I suddenly feel like eating your banana bread. Can you make it for me?"Stella's eyes lit up at my request. She seemed to have suddenly come alive again as she nodded excitedly."I've improved my baking skills lately. Just wait here at the hospital for me. I'll head back and make some for you right away! Wait for me, alright?"She smiled sweetly at me until her eyes crinkled. This was the first time she'd smiled so happily in a long time. She finally left after tucking me in properly. I fixed my gaze on her back, waiting until she left before coughing violently in bed.…I'd asked Audrey to lie to Stella for me.The surgery had been a failure after all. I wa

"Noah? Are you still feeling unwell anywhere? Let me go and get the doctor…" Stella said.I subtly withdrew my hand from her grip without an ounce of warmth in my eyes."You don't need to keep me company in the hospital anymore. We've already broken up.""Are you still angry at me? Don't worry, I've already cut off all contact with Damon. I also told Mom and Dad that I was only marrying you. They've agreed to it. We'll go home and hold our wedding once you've recovered. Let's stay together for the rest of our lives."Her eyes were filled with hope, but I still didn't feel a thing."No. Let's not."The smile froze on Stella's face. She straightened up somewhat helplessly as she stared at me."I don't love you anymore, Stella Nielson. In fact, if you never saw my medical report, you would probably still think that I was lying to you. You've never properly looked at me even once ever since Damon came back."She kept shaking her head as she listened to what I said. She wanted to ex

I knew then that Stella truly loved me at that time.…I never received any more text messages from Stella during the week before the surgery. I thought that she'd finally thought things through and realized that there was no way for us to be together anymore. However, I never thought that she would suddenly barge into the hospital just as I was about to be wheeled out to the operating theater. She began shouting and screaming in the hallway of the hospital, crying, "Where is my boyfriend? His name is Noah Mendoza! Where is he?"Audrey just glanced at me and didn't stop Stella from barging in.The moment Stella saw me, she ran right into my arms, and I stiffened, my arms freezing mid-air.We hadn't seen each other in a long time. She'd lost a lot of weight. She also used to stand straight and tall, but now, it looked like she was burdened with a ton of weight on her shoulders that made her hunched over."I thought I wasn't going to be able to see you again for the rest of my li

Stella even began texting me with different phone numbers and harassing Audrey."Noah, I've found a medical team that can treat your condition. Where are you? Can you send me your location?"Your illness is very serious. Stop being so temperamental. I'll explain everything to you properly about Damon and me once you're back."I promise that I'll marry you if you'll be good and come back."Stella was still behaving the same way she used to in the past, refusing to give up on something the moment she set her heart to it. I knew that ignoring her and playing dumb wouldn't change her mind. Knowing her personality, she would still track me down no matter what. Also, there was the fact that she wouldn't stop harassing Audrey.I let out a long sigh at that thought and finally caved, Facetiming her ultimately."Noah! I knew that you would eventually come looking for me. Where are you now? I've searched everywhere for you. Please don't make me worried, okay?"I've spent a lot of money

I only turned my phone back on after the plane landed. Just a second after turning it back on, the phone rang loudly again."Aren't you going to answer that?" Audrey asked next to me. I hesitated for a while before finally answering it.It was Stella, just as I expected. However, her voice was hoarse and nasal, and she sounded like she'd been crying for a long time."Noah! Where are you? That medical report on the table is yours, isn't it?"Your illness worsened! Why didn't you tell me about it? I would never have changed your medication if I knew! I thought…"Where are you now? I've already asked the doctor about you, and you need surgery immediately! Just tell me where you are. I'll come and get you now. Let's get you treated, alright?"She sounded panicked and hysterical as she pleaded with me, crying and asking me where I was.I was a little dazed. It wasn't until then that I realized I'd left my medical report at home. But it didn't matter anymore, even if she saw it now.
