Chapter 4

作者: Nora Blythe
"Isn't your girlfriend some sort of CEO?" Dr. Peterson asked. "She used to accompany you here all the time. Why wouldn't you have the money to afford the surgery? You've already been on targeted therapy for such a long time. How could you just say that you're giving up now?"

His eyes were round as he stared at me incredulously. After all, Stella always came with me to the hospital for my appointments last time, and he knew who she was.

Yet, when he realized that I was firm about my decision, he sighed in defeat and looked at me with pity.

After leaving his clinic, I was about to leave through the hospital main entrance when someone suddenly called out after me.

I turned and saw a young woman walking up to me. She looked rather familiar. I racked my brains for a name to match her face and finally recalled that she was my college junior, Audrey Carter.

If I recalled correctly, Audrey had studied abroad for several years in the medical research field. She had also kept in touch with me now and then over the past few years, trying to persuade me to get my illness treated abroad.

I just never thought that she would end up coming back here.

"Noah? I've taken a look at your medical report. Are you still not planning to accept my invitation?" she asked. "If you're worried about the medical expenses, you can just leave it to me. I'll take care of it somehow!"

She looked a lot more anxious about my illness than I was. Previously, she'd told me that the drug she was currently researching seemed very suitable for my condition. Once it was successfully developed, my chances of recovery would increase greatly.

I'd rejected her invitation very decisively in the past. After all, Stella had only just taken the CEO position at her company at that time, and I didn't think that she could handle all of the company matters on her own just yet.

But it was evident now that she didn't need me anymore.

I looked up at Audrey and nodded, accepting her invitation without any hesitation.

"Alright. Then, let's go now."

Audrey didn't seem prepared for my answer. In fact, she was probably getting ready for me to reject her instead because she was so stunned at my response that she just stood there for a few seconds, staring at me in disbelief.

I didn't bother explaining much to her and just went back home to grab my things and pack up my suitcase.

There weren't many of my belongings at the apartment anyway, aside from my medication and some empty syringes.

While taking my clothes out, a yellowed envelope fluttered down to the floor from the corner of the wardrobe.

Stella's writing was on it.

"I don't know when you're going to read this, Noah, so just take it as a surprise. Don't worry, I know that you're going to recover completely!

"I purposely got this emerald amulet for you because I heard that it will help restore your health and bring you peace. But I know that you'd have already recovered completely by the time you read this letter! And when that time comes, I will marry you."

A small green amulet then fell out of the envelope.

I stood rooted to the ground for a long time, keeping my head lowered as I read the words on the letter. I stayed there for such a long time that the tears streaming down my face wetted the letter paper completely.

Stella had always liked hiding little surprises for me here and there and waiting for me to discover them myself.

But now, I still hadn't recovered as she had hoped in the letter; in fact, my health was rapidly deteriorating. Meanwhile, she'd also gone back on her promise and wasn't marrying me after all.

I haphazardly wiped off the tears from my face and left the letter and the amulet behind. I also left behind the proposal ring I'd prepared a long time ago and the many photos we'd taken together over the years.

I wasn't bringing with me anything that didn't belong to me.

It wasn't until the entire apartment was finally clear of my belongings that I finally nodded my head in satisfaction.

Whatever happened in the past wasn't important anymore.

On the way to the airport, Audrey turned to me with a confused look on her face.

"Aren't you going to tell Stella about this?"

I instinctively pursed my lips when I heard her mention Stella's name. I guessed that Stella was having fun with Damon elsewhere without me at the moment.

"There's no need," I replied. "Whatever happens to me in the future doesn't have anything to do with her anymore. It doesn't matter if I'm dead or alive."

The plane soared to the skies, and the city I desperately tried establishing myself in gradually receded from sight. Suddenly, I was bombarded with text messages from Stella.

"I never looked down on you!" Stella exclaimed. "I only switched out your medication because the one you were on had terrible side effects! I couldn't bear to see you throw up every day until you were unable to sleep at night from the pain. That's the only reason I switched it to a milder one!"And it wasn't that I didn't want to lend you the 15,000 dollars! I was just scared that you would use the money to buy more of those self-destructing medications for yourself. I didn't want you to become dependent on them!"I don't know what Damon said to you, but the only person I have ever loved is you!"As she finished speaking, she looked up at my expressionless face and hesitated. Her gaze then fell on Audrey next to me."Or, is it that you're leaving me because you've fallen for someone else? You're leaving together with her, aren't you?"Stella would rather hear me say that I'd fallen for someone else than believe that I didn't love her anymore. After all, she had always been a proud

"You have always been the person I'd loved from the very start! I only want to marry you!" Stella exclaimed, looking straight into my eyes.I could feel the love hidden within her eyes. A sudden sharp pain shot through my chest, and I suddenly felt my throat itch.I avoided her gaze and coughed lightly a couple of times."I suddenly feel like eating your banana bread. Can you make it for me?"Stella's eyes lit up at my request. She seemed to have suddenly come alive again as she nodded excitedly."I've improved my baking skills lately. Just wait here at the hospital for me. I'll head back and make some for you right away! Wait for me, alright?"She smiled sweetly at me until her eyes crinkled. This was the first time she'd smiled so happily in a long time. She finally left after tucking me in properly. I fixed my gaze on her back, waiting until she left before coughing violently in bed.…I'd asked Audrey to lie to Stella for me.The surgery had been a failure after all. I wa

"Noah? Are you still feeling unwell anywhere? Let me go and get the doctor…" Stella said.I subtly withdrew my hand from her grip without an ounce of warmth in my eyes."You don't need to keep me company in the hospital anymore. We've already broken up.""Are you still angry at me? Don't worry, I've already cut off all contact with Damon. I also told Mom and Dad that I was only marrying you. They've agreed to it. We'll go home and hold our wedding once you've recovered. Let's stay together for the rest of our lives."Her eyes were filled with hope, but I still didn't feel a thing."No. Let's not."The smile froze on Stella's face. She straightened up somewhat helplessly as she stared at me."I don't love you anymore, Stella Nielson. In fact, if you never saw my medical report, you would probably still think that I was lying to you. You've never properly looked at me even once ever since Damon came back."She kept shaking her head as she listened to what I said. She wanted to ex

I knew then that Stella truly loved me at that time.…I never received any more text messages from Stella during the week before the surgery. I thought that she'd finally thought things through and realized that there was no way for us to be together anymore. However, I never thought that she would suddenly barge into the hospital just as I was about to be wheeled out to the operating theater. She began shouting and screaming in the hallway of the hospital, crying, "Where is my boyfriend? His name is Noah Mendoza! Where is he?"Audrey just glanced at me and didn't stop Stella from barging in.The moment Stella saw me, she ran right into my arms, and I stiffened, my arms freezing mid-air.We hadn't seen each other in a long time. She'd lost a lot of weight. She also used to stand straight and tall, but now, it looked like she was burdened with a ton of weight on her shoulders that made her hunched over."I thought I wasn't going to be able to see you again for the rest of my li

Stella even began texting me with different phone numbers and harassing Audrey."Noah, I've found a medical team that can treat your condition. Where are you? Can you send me your location?"Your illness is very serious. Stop being so temperamental. I'll explain everything to you properly about Damon and me once you're back."I promise that I'll marry you if you'll be good and come back."Stella was still behaving the same way she used to in the past, refusing to give up on something the moment she set her heart to it. I knew that ignoring her and playing dumb wouldn't change her mind. Knowing her personality, she would still track me down no matter what. Also, there was the fact that she wouldn't stop harassing Audrey.I let out a long sigh at that thought and finally caved, Facetiming her ultimately."Noah! I knew that you would eventually come looking for me. Where are you now? I've searched everywhere for you. Please don't make me worried, okay?"I've spent a lot of money

I only turned my phone back on after the plane landed. Just a second after turning it back on, the phone rang loudly again."Aren't you going to answer that?" Audrey asked next to me. I hesitated for a while before finally answering it.It was Stella, just as I expected. However, her voice was hoarse and nasal, and she sounded like she'd been crying for a long time."Noah! Where are you? That medical report on the table is yours, isn't it?"Your illness worsened! Why didn't you tell me about it? I would never have changed your medication if I knew! I thought…"Where are you now? I've already asked the doctor about you, and you need surgery immediately! Just tell me where you are. I'll come and get you now. Let's get you treated, alright?"She sounded panicked and hysterical as she pleaded with me, crying and asking me where I was.I was a little dazed. It wasn't until then that I realized I'd left my medical report at home. But it didn't matter anymore, even if she saw it now.
