Chapter 2

Author: Be Joyful
Before getting married, Mom and Winston signed a prenup stating that she would never have children with him. She wanted nothing distracting them from their private world as a couple.

Winston was a gym trainer making only a few hundred dollars a month, but he was lucky to meet Mom not long after starting the job. Armed with his eight-pack abs and smooth tongue, he succeeded in sweeping her off her feet.

Just three days after Dad's funeral, Mom dragged Winston into the city hall to marry him.

My grandparents strongly objected when they found out.

"Hobert isn't even cold in his grave, yet you've lined up your next man! He worked himself to the bone to build a multi-million dollar business, only for you and your lover to live off it!"

They stood there with hunched backs, their voices hoarse and raspy as they argued with Mom. Looking at their deeply wrinkled faces and gray hair made my heart ache.

They had been farmers their entire lives. They had sacrificed everything to raise Dad, their only child, into a successful man, only to be left with nothing.

When I told them that I wanted to leave and move back to the countryside with them, they gently talked me out of it.

"You'll have good food and nice clothes if you stay in the city with your mom, but if you come with us, you'll only suffer.

"Besides, schools in the countryside can't rival the educational resources here in the city. Stay here, be your mom's little princess, and grow up to become someone who contributes to society!"

What they didn't know was that in Mom's eyes, I was no longer a little princess.

To me, Winston was nothing but a homewrecker who barged into my life out of nowhere and seized everything I had ever owned.

For their third wedding anniversary, Mom booked dozens of tables at a luxury hotel. Her family and Winston's relatives sat crowded around the tables, chatting and laughing as if they had known each other for a lifetime. They had endless topics to talk about.

Meanwhile, I sat expressionless in the far corner, feeling like a complete outsider.

Suddenly, Winston's older brother walked over and patted me on the shoulder.

"Your mom and dad have been married for three years now, but you still call him 'sir.' Since we're all celebrating today, why don't we change that? Let's hear you call him 'Dad'!"

All eyes in the room immediately locked on me.

Mom urged, "Go on. Say it."

Fighting back my disgust, I indifferently looked at her and said, "I can't bring myself to say it."

Slap!

I could immediately feel my cheeks burning in pain.

Mom's chest heaved with pure rage. "It's been three years. How are you still hung up over your dead father?"

Her words hurt like a knife cutting through my heart.

I immediately stood up and walked out, just to hear Winston complaining to Mom behind me. "I don't mind if she doesn't call me Dad, but she shows such a poor attitude toward my family. You need to teach her some manners."

That night, I dug out all our old family albums and cut "Mom" out from every photo we had taken together.

My tears soaked the bedsheets as I told myself to study harder. Only when I reached the very peak would people looking down on me finally bow their heads.

She didn't stop until he collapsed onto the floor and went completely still.Someone in

When Mom heard Elliot's words, she looked completely petrified. She stared at me in a daze and stammered, "Y-You… Alera… A Darlington College graduate? Billions of dollars in net worth?"I let out a cold laugh. "That's right."She immediately shrieked, "No! No… That's not possible! You were waiting tables at that bistro, so it can't be… It makes no sense…"I placed one of my business cards in her hand and raised an eyebrow. "Take a close look at what's written there, Ms. Baldwin."As her eyes scanned the text, the shock on her face slowly turned into a deathly paleness. She began murmuring under her breath, "Alera AI Technologies… CEO… Alera Welch…"M-My daughter… My daughter is the CEO of a company…"I turned to Elliot and said, "Let's go."We had barely walked away when Mom rushed forward and dropped to her knees right in front of me again. Tears streamed down her face."Alera… I-I'm so sorry for all these years. I have nothing now, so could you please take me in?"I calmly

When I heard Mom call my name, I instinctively scrambled into Elliot's car and urged him, "Hurry up! Start the car!"Elliot didn't ask any questions. He immediately headed toward the driver's seat, but Mom was faster. She sprinted over and violently yanked me out of my seat."Your biological mother called for you, yet you were trying to run away!"At her words, Elliot shot me a quick, slightly surprised look. But he immediately recovered his composure and said, "Go ahead and sort things out with your mom first. I'll wait for you in the car."With that, he slid into the driver's seat."Is that your boyfriend? He looks incredibly refined, and he must be loaded, right?" Mom pressed, and her eyes were glued to Elliot through the car window.I pulled her aside and coldly said, "You told me to rot in that godforsaken town, right? Why did you call out to me, then?"And didn't you buy a luxury apartment in Parlentown? What are you doing here in Jarfield?"Instead of answering, Mom loop

Ms. Jefferson's gift turned out to be a shopping trip to buy me clothes. She dragged me to the mall and picked out several outfits for every season.I tried to turn down the gesture the whole time, but she "threatened" me with, "If you keep treating me like a stranger, we're not staying in touch again!"I had no choice but to accept her kindness. When we left the mall, both my hands were full of large shopping bags.A satisfied smile curled up at the corner of her lips as she said, "There. Now you won't have to worry about clothes for the next four years."Tears welled up in my eyes, and my throat felt as if it were blocked by a lump of words. For a time, I couldn't even find the words to thank her.Later, Ms. Jefferson had to leave first since her daughter had a dance class that afternoon. Looking at the bags, I decided to flag a cab back to campus. That was when a familiar voice drifted into my ears."Alera! Fancy seeing you here!"When I looked in the direction of the voice

During the two days my classmates took their SAT, I worked my shift at the bistro. My supervisor, Samantha Blackburn, pulled me aside and reminded me, "The table you're serving is celebrating a gentleman's birthday, and the little gift box on your tray is from his wife."When the time comes, make sure you present it to him with both hands.""Will do. Don't worry," I said with a nod.But when I walked over to the table, I noticed that the "gentleman" Samantha had been talking about was Winston. Mom sat next to him, meticulously adjusting his tie.Winston noticed me first, and a sleek, greasy smile instantly spread across his face. "Well, if it isn't Alera! Shouldn't you be taking the SAT? Why are you working here instead?"Mom looked over when she heard that. A trace of genuine shock flashed across her face as she looked me up and down and asked, "What are you doing here, waiting tables? Did you drop out of school?"Deep down, I let out a cold laugh. I kept my face completely exp
