Chapter 1

Emily Grace Carter had always believed she was ordinary.

She had been born on a crisp October morning in Boston, Massachusetts—or so her birth certificate said. Her parents, Michael and Sarah Carter, often joked that she'd arrived screaming loud enough for the entire maternity ward to hear. They told the story every birthday, laughing about how the nurses had predicted she'd either become a lawyer or a singer because she refused to stop making noise.

Emily loved hearing the story.

She never questioned it.

Why would she?

Her childhood was exactly what anyone would call normal.

Every Sunday morning, her family attended St. Michael's Catholic Church, where Father Donnelly greeted every child by name and always carried peppermints in the pockets of his black robe. Emily attended St. Michael's Academy from kindergarten through eighth grade, wearing the same navy-blue plaid skirt, white blouse, and knee-high socks every day.

She hated the uniform.

Her mother insisted it was adorable.

Emily disagreed.

She had the same group of friends from first grade onward.

Olivia.

Rachel.

Sophie.

Grace.

The four girls were inseparable.

They traded friendship bracelets during recess.

Passed folded notes during math.

Whispered about boys during lunch.

And every Friday night, one of their houses hosted another sleepover.

Sleeping bags covered living room floors while cheesy romantic movies played until midnight. They painted each other's nails, experimented with makeup they weren't supposed to own, and giggled over ghost stories until someone inevitably got scared and insisted all the lights stay on.

Emily was always the brave one.

Ghosts weren't real.

Neither were monsters.

At least...

That's what she believed.

Summer vacations became traditions.

When Emily was seven, her parents took her to Walt Disney World.

At ten, they spent a week on Cape Cod collecting seashells.

By thirteen, they had graduated to cruises in the Caribbean.

Emily loved the ocean.

She could spend hours floating in the warm water, staring at endless blue skies.

Her father often teased that she belonged in the sea more than on land.

"You've never met a beach you didn't fall in love with," he'd say.

She'd laugh.

"Can you blame me?"

Her life felt safe.

Predictable.

Perfect.

If there was one strange thing about Emily...

It was the dreams.

They started when she was six.

Always the same.

She'd wake in the middle of an endless forest beneath a massive silver moon.

She could hear wolves howling in the distance.

Not frightening howls.

Lonely ones.

She would follow them through the trees until she reached a clearing where a giant white wolf waited.

The animal never moved.

Never growled.

It simply watched her.

Its silver eyes were filled with sadness.

Every dream ended exactly the same way.

The wolf would lower its head.

Then whisper...

"Find us."

Emily always woke before she could ask what it meant.

She told her mother about the dreams once.

Sarah smiled gently as she tucked Emily back beneath her blankets.

"It just means you have a big imagination."

Emily accepted that answer.

Children dreamed strange things all the time.

By high school, life became busier.

Emily joined the soccer team.

She made honor roll every semester.

She volunteered at church food drives and helped organize toy collections every Christmas.

Her parents couldn't have been prouder.

She had her first crush during sophomore year.

His name was Ethan Brooks.

Captain of the baseball team.

Blue eyes.

Crooked smile.

Completely oblivious that Emily existed.

Olivia spent weeks trying to convince Emily to talk to him.

Instead...

Emily accidentally walked into a locker.

Directly in front of him.

For years afterward, her friends never let her forget it.

Her sixteenth birthday arrived with balloons, cake, and far too many embarrassing childhood photos.

Michael handed her a small velvet box after dinner.

Inside was an antique silver necklace.

A delicate crescent moon hung from the chain.

Emily admired it.

"It's beautiful."

"It belonged to your grandmother," Michael said softly.

"Mom's mother?"

There was the briefest hesitation.

"...Yes."

Sarah quickly smiled.

"It always seemed meant for you."

Emily fastened it around her neck.

It fit perfectly.

Almost...

As if it had been made for her.

Neither of her parents noticed the pendant growing warm against her skin.

Or the faint silver glow that lasted only a heartbeat before disappearing.

Outside...

Nearly a thousand miles away...

Deep within the forests of Black Hollow...

A massive silver wolf lifted his head toward the moon.

His golden eyes widened.

He hadn't felt that presence in twenty-five years.

The scent.

The bond.

The impossible spark of a bloodline everyone believed had vanished.

He whispered a single name carried only by instinct.

"...Emily."

Miles away, hidden in another territory, an older wolf with crimson eyes opened his own.

He had felt it too.

A slow smile spread across his scarred face.

"So..."

He looked toward the rising moon.

"The last Moonblood lives."

And for the first time in twenty-five years...

The wolves began to hunt.

The cave trembled again.A deep groan rolled through the mountain as loose rocks continued tumbling from somewhere above.Dust drifted through the air like gray snow. For several seconds, none of them spoke. The only sounds were the relentless roar of the waterfall......and the grinding of thousands of pounds of stone settling into place.Noah coughed, waving dust away from his face."Please tell me that wasn't natural."Kael was already at the blocked entrance. He pressed both hands against the largest boulder.Cold.Solid.Immovable.He pushed harder. The muscles in his shoulders tightened beneath his shirt.Nothing.Not even the slightest shift. He stepped back slowly."It was deliberate."Adrian nodded once."Yes.""You knew.""I suspected."Kael turned on him.His voice remained calm.Far too calm."You brought us here.""I did.""You knew someone would follow.""I hoped they wouldn't."Kael took one measured step forward."If Emily is in danger because of this—""She is."Adria

For a long moment, no one moved. The waterfall thundered into the crystal-clear pool below, filling the valley with a constant roar that drowned out every other sound.Mist drifted through the morning sunlight.Tiny rainbows appeared and disappeared in the spray.Kael never took his eyes off Adrian."You said there was something we needed to see.""There is."Adrian nodded toward the waterfall."Follow me."Noah looked at Kael."What do you think?"Kael answered without looking away from Adrian."I think we stay alert."Adrian smiled faintly."I would expect nothing less."The path around the pool was uneven, covered with slick stones and thick moss.As they approached the falls, the roar of the water grew louder until conversation became nearly impossible.Adrian stopped at the base of the cliff. He pointed toward the curtain of water."Behind it."Noah squinted."There's nothing there.""There is."Adrian stepped into the spray without hesitation. For a moment he disappeared complet

Kael remained standing in the middle of the road long after Adrian disappeared. The forest was silent again. No footsteps. No rustling branches.Nothing.He looked down at the folded map in his hand. The paper was old.Very old.Its edges had yellowed with age, and the ink had faded enough that some of the trail markings were barely visible.Yet one place stood out clearly.Hawthorne Falls.A blue circle surrounded it.Nothing else.No explanation. No note.No reason.Kael turned the map over. The back was blank. He exhaled slowly before climbing back into his truck. As he drove toward the lodge, one thought refused to leave him.How does he know Emily's name? Not just her name.He knew things about her.Things no stranger should know. And despite every instinct telling Kael to distrust him...Adrian had never once lied.He simply refused to answer the questions that mattered most. The Crescent Moon Lodge was quiet when Kael finally returned. Most of the pack had gone home after the f

Emily didn't realize how late it was until she glanced at her watch.10:47 p.m.She looked out across Crescent Lake. The bonfire had burned down to glowing embers.Only a handful of townspeople remained, laughing quietly around the fire while children slept on blankets in their parents' laps."I should probably head home," she said.Kael nodded."You've had a long day.""I don't think I've ever walked this much in one day."He smiled."You kept up.""Barely.""I didn't hear you complain once."Emily laughed."My feet might disagree tomorrow."For a moment, neither of them moved. The lake reflected thousands of stars.Somewhere across the water, a loon called into the night. It was the kind of peaceful silence that didn't need to be filled.Emily finally smiled."Thank you."Kael looked over."For what?""For today.""For yesterday.""For...everything, really.""You've made moving here a lot easier than I expected."His expression softened."I'm glad."She hesitated before speaking aga

No one on the trail moved. The forest seemed to be holding its breath.Sheriff Reeves slowly lowered his flashlight."Did everyone see that?"One of the firefighters swallowed hard."I wish I hadn't."Ben kept staring at the ridge."It wasn't a bear.""No," Kael answered quietly."It wasn't."The old retriever, Ranger, had backed against Kael's leg. The dog's ears were pinned flat, and a low whine vibrated deep in his throat.Kael knelt beside him."Easy."Ranger immediately leaned into his hand. The dog's fear wasn't fading. If anything...It was growing.Noah slowly swept his flashlight across the ridge one last time."Do we go after it?"Kael didn't answer immediately.Instead, he closed his eyes.He listened. The wind whispered through the pines.A creek rushed somewhere downhill. An owl called from deep within the valley.Then...Nothing.Whatever had been there was gone."We're heading back."Ben looked surprised."That's it?""We found the dog.""We know the boy is safe."Sheri

For several long seconds, no one spoke.Ranger stood in the middle of the trail, chest heaving, his golden coat damp with sweat and bits of leaves clinging to his fur.He barked once.Twice.Then trotted a few steps into the darkness before looking back over his shoulder. It was obvious. He wanted them to follow.Sheriff Reeves knelt beside the old retriever, running careful hands over his shoulders and legs."No blood."One of the firefighters let out a relieved sigh."He looks okay."Kael wasn't convinced. He crouched beside the dog."Easy, buddy."Ranger immediately stopped barking.Instead, he pressed against Kael's leg, whining softly. The dog's entire body trembled.Kael gently examined the broken collar. It hadn't been cut.It hadn't worn out.It had been snapped apart by tremendous force. He looked into the forest again.Something powerful had grabbed this dog......and then let him go.That didn't make sense."What do you think happened?" Sheriff Reeves asked quietly.Kael sl
