The glass shattered the second it left my hand
Whiskey splashed across the floor of my penthouse while pieces of crystal scattered near Oliver’s shoes. The sound exploded violently. Sharp enough to slice through the silence that had been building between us for the last five minutes.
Neither of us moved.
I stood there breathing slowly, staring at the mess near his feet while anger crawled heavily beneath my skin. Oliver didn’t flinch. He didn’t even look surprised. That annoyed me more than it should have.
“That was your solution?” I asked firmly. “You paid a woman to date me?”
The city lights burned behind us through the floor to the ceiling windows, throwing shadows across the room. Oliver stayed seated across from where us stood.
“She signed the contract willingly, you know. I didn’t force her to sign it.” He said
“Willingly?” I said looking straight at him now. “You found someone desperate enough to need money and call it willingness.”
“You are reacting emotionally.” Oliver said, letting out a small smile.
I dragged a hand slowly across my jaw.
“You involved a stranger in my life without asking me,” I muttered.
“You stopped allowing people in your life years ago.”
My jaw tightened. I loosened the cut of my sleeves slowly, trying to settle the irritation crawling beneath my skin. “What exactly did you tell her?”
“That it is a contract for six months . Nothing important, she just has to get you out of your shell.”
“And she agreed?”
“She needed the money.”
“That answer is beginning to annoy me. You can’t buy people and not because someone is desperate doesn’t mean you have to feed off their desperation.”
A faint sigh left him before he reached her for the file in his suitcase and handed it over to me. I hesitated before I took it from him and opened it.
“She owns a company,” he said quietly. “It’s collapsing. She came looking for an investor.”
My eyes dropped to the file
“And instead of helping her normally, you offered her a contract?”
“She was already desperate before she entered the office. She had a choice not to come when I gave her my card, but she did anyway. So can you stop making this a big deal and go through the file I sent to you. And I promise you, you will like her. She’s different from all the girls you’ve ever dated.”
The photograph was the first thing saw
Dark hair. Sharp eyes. No smile.
Most people tried hard to look good in pictures. But she was different. It looked like she was coerced to take this picture and never even cared what the outcome would look like.
“What’s her name?” I asked
“Zara.”
My eyes stayed on the picture longer than they should have. There was something exhausting about the way she looked at the camera. Not weak. Not fragile. Just tired.
Like life had been pressing against her for too long
“How much did you pay her?” I asked
“Five million dollars up front.”
That finally made me look away from the photograph. “You gave a stranger five million dollars?”
Oliver nods pulling out a pack of gum from his picked an popping two into his mouth
Before I could say anything else the door to my penthouse suddenly opened. Oliver didn’t turn because he already knew the only person who could come in uninvited asides him.
Mira vale walked in like she owned the place. She smiled when she saw me. Bright and confident
“River,” she said softly, like my name belonged in her mouth more than anywhere else. I didn’t respond. Oliver finally looked up, mildly annoyed but not surprised.
“You are not on the schedule,” he said
She ignored him completely. She walked towards me wearing a very tight dress that was transparent, with a six inch heel that she could barely walk in. She always did too much.
Her heels clicked against the floor as she walked further, eyes locked on me
“I was in the building and thought to stop by,” she said casually.
She stopped beside my chair instead of in front of it. Close enough that I could feel her presence shift the air, but I still don’t look up to her. I held the file tightly in my hands now not letting her have a peak of what is inside.
Oliver scoffs loudly in irritation. He hated her and so did I.
She leaned down slightly resting one hand on the arm of my chair. Her fingers brushed it first, then stayed there.
“I missed you at the gala.” She said quietly
“I wasn’t there,” I replied
A small smile curved her lips
“You should have been.”
Her hand slid higher along the chair, then paused near my shoulder. Not quite touching me yet. When I didn’t react, she finally let her fingers land slightly on my shoulders .
“I heard you’ve been hiding again.” Her voice is quieter now, more like a whisper.
“I’ve been working.”
“Yes…we don’t wait around for daddy’s money.” Oliver added.
She hissed at Oliver’s statement. I expected more but I guess she really didn’t have his time.
“I could take you out. Just me and you. We could have fun, and I bet I would make you forget about work.”
“I don’t go out,” I said.
Her lips curved slightly
“That’s what you always say. You know, I love it when you don’t respond to me or do what I want.” She said quietly. “It makes me want you more.”
Her eyes moved from me to the folder I was holding in my hands. Her expression changed. “What is that?” She asked.
Mira’s eyes dropped to the file and before I could move it away, she pulled it from my grip with a small smile.
“Now I’m curious.” She murmured
She opened it immediately, the teasing expression leaving her face instantly. Her eye settled on Zara’s picture and stayed there longer than expected
Mira slowly lifted her gaze from the file to me and something sharp flickered across her face for the first time.
“…who is she? She asked with a serious tone.
River I pulled the car to a smooth stop beneath the covered entrance of Maison Étoile. Before I could step out, a valet was already approaching. I handed him the keys without a word before walking around the front of the car. Zara had just opened her door when I reached her. She looked up the building, her gaze slowly taking in the understated elegance of the boutique. There were no oversized logos or glittering displays demanding attention. “You ready?” I asked She smiled. “Of course.” The glass doors slid open before we even got to them. A woman dressed in a tailored back suit stepped forward, her smile warm but impeccably professional. “Good afternoon, Mr. Cassian.” I inclined my head. “Good afternoon.” “We’ve been eagerly waiting for your arrival.” She stepped aside, gesturing us inside. “Everything has been prepared exactly the way you requested.”The boutique was silent. No customers browsed the display. No consultants hurried between appointments. Zara slowed behi
River The penthouse was unusually quiet when I got home. I loosened my tie as I walked through the living room, instinctive glancing towards the kitchen. Empty. I checked the dining area. Still empty. Her bedroom door was slightly open, the lights were switched off. She was at home. I frowned almost imperceptibly. Normally, by this hour, she would either be working on her laptop, making dinner, or talking to herself while wandering around the apartment. Somehow, in the space of weeks, that had become the new normal. Today was just silent. Different even. I set my keys on the console table and slipped my phone from my pocket. No messages. For a brief moment I simply stood there. She was an adult and she had a driver. So she was safe. There was no need for me to worry. I looked at my watch. Nine-thirty. Before I could talk myself out of it, I tapped her contact. The phone rang twice. “Hello?” Zara answered, her voice as bright as ever. “Where are you?” A beat of silenc
Zara The drive into the city’s luxury district took a little over twenty minutes. As the Mercedes slowed to a stop, I found myself staring through the tinted window. Every storefront looked like something out of a magazine. Glass facades starched towards the sky, reflecting the afternoon sun. Luxury cars lined the street, valets moved effortlessly from one vehicle to another, and elegantly dressed shoppers wandered from one boutique to the next carrying glossy shopping bags with names I had only seen online. Gregory stepped out first and opened my door.“I’ll be here whenever you are ready.” I smiled. “Thank you.” Eliza the climbed out beside me and immediately slipped her hand through mine. “You look nervous.” “I’m not nervous.” She looked at me knowingly. “You have been looking around since we got here.” “I’ve never been here before.” “Exactly.” She smiled. “So today, we are fixing that.” Before I could protest, she was already leading me towards the first boutique.
Zara By the end of the week, I had settled into my normal routine. River woke up and went to work most mornings before I did. I worked from the penthouse, and it was very exhausting, I missed my normal life and my best friend. And find myself talking to Herbert whenever I needed a break. Living with River wasn’t nearly as difficult as I’d imagined. He was quiet and unpredictable. Organized to an almost frightening degree. But also considerate in ways he probably didn’t even realize. The times I didn’t abide by the rules, he doesn’t complain. He simply just does it. I want to go to the office today and probably have lunch at my favorite spot. I put on a pair of tennis skirts with a crop pink sweater, my pink sneakers and a packed my hair into a bun. A few moments later, the elevator doors opened onto the lobby. A gentleman I what looks like his early fifties stepped inside just as I stepped out. He paused and offered a warm smile. “Good morning.” “Good morning.” “I don’
River By the time the last board member walked out of the conference room, I felt every minute of the day settle heavily across my shoulders. “Tomorrow at nine, you have the Hendersonville meeting,” my assistant reminded me as she handed over a folder. “I know.” “And your lunch with the Singapore investors.” “I know.” “And your interview with—““I know.”She offered me an apologetic smile before stepping aside. The office slowly emptied around me. Outside the floor to ceiling windows, the city had begun to glow beneath the fading evening sky. Headlights stretched endlessly along the roads below, weaving through traffic like ribbons of light. I loosened my tie as I walked towards the elevator. Oliver caught up with me just before the door closed.“Tough day.” “They usually are.” He grinned. “At least you’ve got something waiting at home now.” I looked at him. He raised both hands.” I’m just saying.” The elevator door slid shut. A few minutes later, I was behind the wh
Zara The smell of fresh linen and the unfamiliar softness of the mattress was the first reminders that I wasn’t in my apartment anymore. I blinked sleep from my eyes and stared at the ceiling. For a brief moment I did not remember where I was until I bent my head to look out the window. Then I remembered I lived in a penthouse. A quiet sigh escaped me as I sat up, pushing the duvet aside m. Sunlight poured through the windows, painting golden streaks across the wooden floor. Today was officially my first day living here. After showering and changing, into a pair of jean shorts and an oversized cream sweater, I tie my hair into a loose ponytail before leaving my room. The hallway was silent. I wondered if River was awake or still asleep. As I reached the kitchen, something caught my attention. A single sheet of paper rested neatly on the marble island. Beside it lay a matte black card like the one he gave me last night. Curiosity got the better part of me. I walked over an
