LOGINThe three women surrounded Vanessa, scrutinizing and probing, their gazes a mix of shock. They were all familiar faces, but three years had passed, and they had all changed.
Back then, when she was driven away, the Voss family had given her father money, entrusting him to take good care of her.
They had assumed Vanessa had been living well all these years, but they never expected her to end up looking like this.
"Isn't this Miss Voss?" A woman's voice was sharp, mocking in a slow, deliberate tone, before she changed her tune. "Ugh, never mind, I forgot, the one in front of us is just a fake."
After a burst of laughter, another woman chimed in.
"What, did you come looking for Bart, realizing that you can't seduce Julian looking like this, so you're settling for second best?"
"Freda, what are you saying? Looking like her, even hooking up with Bart is a stretch."
"You're reminding me, she's a shameless hussy. Back then, Julian didn't want her, so she hired someone to kidnap Ivy Solace, causing her death..." Freda Moore glared at Vanessa, as if wanting to gouge her eyes out, while loudly proclaiming, "How dare you still be alive?"
Vanessa's lips trembled, a flicker of fear crossing her dim eyes. Julian had choked her neck back then, asking her the same question.
She had cried and said it wasn't her, that she was a victim too.
Julian didn't believe it.
No one believed it.
In court, the kidnappers accused her, her parents suspected her, the lawyer presented irrefutable evidence, and she couldn't defend herself. That was then, and it was still the same today.
"What's the matter, cat got your tongue?"
"Feeling guilty, are we?"
The wind blew rain inside, soaking half of her clothes. Standing in the cold wind, she accepted the accusations. "It's my fault, it's all my fault..."
The words stunned Freda and the others. Someone so arrogant was actually speaking to them so meekly.
Straightening her face, Freda chuckled. "So you know it's your fault now? Why didn't you admit it in court back then?"
Vanessa didn't argue. She was shoved a couple of times, her body falling into the rain, teetering.
Lacking her retaliation, the event lost its appeal. Julian extinguished his cigarette and was about to sit back down when the argument downstairs intensified. Provoked, perhaps, by Vanessa's submissive appearance, Freda raised her hand and slapped her.
Adrian immediately stood up straight, waiting for Vanessa's reaction, but she only covered her face, not moving. Freda grabbed her arm and pushed, and she rolled down the steps. The security guards at the clubhouse were alerted and rushed over.
Fortunately, the injuries weren't serious. A fall and a slap were much lighter than a living life.
Vanessa was drenched, cowering in the back seat of the car. Sitting beside her was Julian, one calm and indifferent, relaxed and detached, the other miserable and defeated, like a stray dog.
They seemed like people who shouldn't be in the same space at all.
There were towels in the car, but Julian didn't offer one to Vanessa. However, if she begged him, he might show some mercy.
Just like before, when she would tug on his perfectly tailored suit sleeve, cooing, "Julian, please help me, just this once..."
But he didn't know.
A plea for help that is not answered for a long time can make a person lose heart.
Even if she had another chance to gain sympathy, Vanessa would not speak again. Hitting a brick wall too many times hurts.
"Adrian went to find Bart. I'll take you back." Julian clarified his position, sitting on the same row as Vanessa, yet appearing miles apart.
Vanessa's tone was even more detached than his. "Actually... I can go back by myself."
So he had made a presumptuous offer?
The corners of Julian's mouth curved into a self-deprecating smile. "This is Adrian's request."
In other words, it wasn't that he wanted to meddle.
"I know."
Julian didn't look at her, but he could feel her face tilt up slightly, a faint gaze being cast toward him. Every word she spoke was with immense courage. "I know you don't want to see me again. In the past, I was ignorant and made many mistakes, causing you a lot of trouble. I won't make those mistakes again."
"Those mistakes?" Julian turned his head. "Meaning?"
Vanessa lowered her head again. "Liking you."
Julian came and went, not lingering.Stacey was left behind, facing Maria's passive-aggressive remarks and the Old Master's interrogations alone. She was physically and mentally exhausted, yet couldn't blame anyone. When she went downstairs for a warm drink, Cliff was also at the water bar."Water?" He adjusted his glasses lightly and handed her the honey water in front of him. "Drink this; it's freshly made.""Thank you." Stacey took it, the melancholy on her face impossible to hide."I heard Aunt Blain caused you trouble?" Cliff comforted softly, as if speaking on Julian's behalf. "Don't worry, Julian never wrongfully accuses anyone."That was true. But that wasn't what Stacey was worried about. "Bro, you said before that Miss Brooks wouldn't be with Julian. Is that true?""It's true, but Vanessa was kicked out by Uncle Voss and is pregnant now. Her current situation is hard to say. After all, if she's not with Julian, she has no other options, don't you think?"This couldn't be cal
Pulling Auntie Blain away, Jerry finally let go. She adjusted her shawl, brushed back her hair, and steadied her nerves."Auntie Blain, please, don't come here again. Mr. Frost is already furious." Jerry's advice was well-meaning, but Auntie Blain wouldn't listen."You're the one who told Julian, aren't you?"Jerry was helpless, truly wondering how the gentle Stacey could have such a rogue aunt. "If Mr. Frost hadn't come and something serious happened, it wouldn't be something you could bear the consequences for.""I'm going to beat that hussy's child out of her, so she doesn't get ahead of herself just because she's carrying some bastard!""Auntie Blain!"Getting out of the car, Stacey hurried over, grabbing her aunt's arm, her expression a mix of panic and nervousness. "Jerry, what happened?""You can ask her yourself," Jerry said, a slap mark still blooming on her face from the unwarranted blow. "Miss Vanessa's health is already delicate. Charging in to hit her like that... Mr. Fro
After spending a night in the hospital, Vanessa was discharged in the afternoon.Julian didn't appear, sending Jerry to pick her up instead. Vanessa, neither warm nor cold, entrusted Jerry with a message for Julian, "Tell him, if he can't meet my conditions, he shouldn't bother coming to see me again for a while.""Miss Brooks..."Jerry felt profoundly troubled on Julian's behalf. "Your conditions are indeed a bit unreasonable. Mr. Frost has already done his utmost to meet them for you... his solution isn't bad at all, actually.""If you think it's so good, then *you* marry him," Vanessa said calmly, yet her words were sharp enough to completely silence Jerry.Knowing full well he couldn't win an argument with Vanessa, Jerry quietly shut his mouth. "Miss Brooks, the discharge procedures are done. We can go."He walked ahead and opened the ward door. A figure swiftly darted past him. Before Jerry could even react, the person had rushed up to Vanessa, raising a hand without a word and d
The deep night after midnight grew even colder, the wind like blades.Julian had quit smoking for many days but relapsed. In the brief time he'd been in the car, he'd smoked three or four cigarettes, his face etched with fatigue, eyes sunken from days of restless nights. The car stopped downstairs at the Frost family residence. He hadn't gone up in a long time, tilting his head back, exhaling smoke with a blank, numb expression. His mind was filled with memories of Vanessa at twenty, hugging him, clinging to him, her chin tilted up as she gazed at him, her eyes brimming with warm, vibrant love.It was intense, enough to melt his cold heart. But in a blink. He was back in that hospital scene. Her eyes were hollow, devoid of all youthful sparkle. She had probably cried too many times, the corners of her eyes red and swollen, almost raw from tears. Her lashes drooped, expressing both loss and hatred, as she spoke hoarsely: "If only I had a knife, I would drag you down with me."She wante
The news of Vanessa fainting reached the Frost family, and the most restless person was Stacey. She went upstairs, locked her door, trembling with anxiety and panic. A sudden ring from her phone made her jump. It was her aunt, and the moment she answered, a torrent of scolding assailed her."Stacey, did you see that? Look what happened now," her aunt’s voice was sharp, every word fueling Stacey’s terror. "That little hussy Julian keeps outside is coming for your position. She’s pregnant, Julian likes her, divorcing you and marrying her is only a matter of time. Let's see if you can still sit around doing nothing now?""Julian said he wouldn't…"Stacey’s words lacked any conviction. After all, when Vanessa had heard their plan that afternoon, the attitude she displayed wasn't satisfaction or contentment. Instead, she was riddled with resistance, and Julian’s stance was unconditionally on Vanessa’s side.
The call hadn't ended yet. Julian stood upstairs, gazing down at the two women below.Stacey explained softly, her patience boundless, like an older sister. Yet, Vanessa's expression across from her was far from what was expected. After a long, tense moment, she uttered something inaudible, then abruptly rose, snatched her bag, and walked out.A terrible premonition.Julian hung up the phone and hurried downstairs. "What's wrong with Vanessa?"Stacey's innocent facade was plastered across her face, her words coming out in a slight stammer. "I... I just explained the whole situation to her. I didn't know she'd have such a strong reaction."Julian swiftly pursued her, catching up to Vanessa just as she was about to leave. He seized her hand."Vanessa."A fresh pang shot through her hand.Vanessa yanked her hand free, shoving Julian hard. The tears glistening in her eyes were a calculated act. She gave him a scathing look, then sw
Julian had always treated this half-brother like a servant. He did so as a child, and when he grew up, he only had Cliff do some shady odd jobs for him.Walking downstairs, Julian stood in front of Vanessa, his sharp and cold aura completely overwhelming Cliff, who appeared gentle and detached. "Va
The next second, the door was flung open.Julian stood in the doorway, shooting Maria an icy glare before sweeping past Vanessa. His tone was less than welcoming, "Come in."This had come so suddenly; Vanessa didn't know how to react.Following him inside, Julian closed the door behind her and was
White smoke curled around his fingertips, his voice low, "Even if it's something I don't want, it's still mine. No one else has the right to it."His phone vibrated.Julian answered, his expression softening slightly as he listened to the old man's questions on the other end. "...Yes, nothing serio
Stepping forward, Adrian was the first to restrain Leila, and even he lost his temper, "Shut up once you've cried enough."The sobbing hitched, and Leila pursed her lips, ceasing her crying."Stay here and don't run around again." Adrian pulled out a tissue to wipe away Leila's tears, the action ge
