Mag-log inVanessa pursed her lips, remaining silent.
"Are you listening to me?"
Clutching her skirt tightly, Vanessa choked back a breath, cautiously saying, "...Could we try it, for a month?"
Bart was pig-headed, not understanding. "What do you mean?"
"It's just, we spend a month together. If it doesn't work out..." No one would like her anymore, Vanessa knew. She didn't ask for much, she just wanted to stay.
To stay, she had to latch onto something or someone. Bart wasn't ideal, but he was her lifeline.
"If it still doesn't work out... we'll tell the families we dated, but weren't compatible."
Her accent was odd, like she was timid, yet also stuttering.
Amused by her demeanor, Bart leaned back, stretched his shoulders and chuckled. "No wonder they say you're no good, rattling off a bunch of crazy ideas the moment you open your mouth."
"Sorry." Vanessa was practically begging, making concessions. "If it's not okay, I..."
"It's okay."
Bart's eyes were as if he'd discovered an interesting toy. "That suits me just fine, and saves my family from owing Aunt Evelyn a favor."
Taking a sip of tea, he said with a playful grin, "But I'm warning you in advance, I'm not a good person. You might not be able to handle a month."

Learning that Bart had taken Vanessa out, Adrian waited to see the show.
Bart was a reckless, straightforward man. He was bound to say some awful things to Vanessa. The thought of her pale, humiliated face made Adrian feel good.
Standing at the window, he watched the small car pull up below.
Bart got out first, then, remembering the agreement he'd made with Vanessa, turned back and opened the car door for her.
This scene was unbelievable to Adrian.
He stood frozen by the window, gripping his teacup tightly, his molars clenched, jaw tense.
Bart dropped Vanessa off and left. Evelyn held her downstairs for a long chat before letting her go. The moment she went upstairs, she ran into Adrian, who looked like he wanted to skin her alive.
"I actually thought you'd changed. Who knew all these years away you’ve learned how to become a vixen."
Bart had seen plenty of women, he should have dismissed Vanessa. That he personally drove her back – Adrian knew without a doubt she had used some trickery.
Vanessa stepped back, uneasy and frightened. "...I didn't."
"Didn't?"
Adrian couldn't help but laugh, lowering his voice to keep Evelyn from hearing the argument downstairs. "Then why would Bart obediently drive you back?"
"He just...doesn't want to be scolded by his family." Vanessa gripped the stair railing, needing something to support her.
"Don't think you can climb the social ladder by latching onto him." Adrian’s warning was sharp and cutting. "With your history, I can guarantee no one will want you."
Vanessa didn't argue. "I..."
She had long given up hope. She wasn’t loved by Julian in the past, and she wasn't loved by anyone now. She had tasted this bitter flavor for so long, it had become a numbing norm.
Scoffing, Adrian raised the cup of hot tea and poured it over Vanessa's head. It was scalding, but she didn't move.
This kind of humiliation couldn’t hurt Vanessa anymore.
The teacup shattered.
Adrian stepped forward, grabbing Vanessa's arm. "Since you're so desperate to climb up, how about I take you?"
Before returning, Vanessa had expected this. They wouldn't let her go.
In their eyes – she was the one who killed Ivy Solace. She owed a life. But she was alive and well. A living hell, *that* was her fate.

Under the cloak of the cold night, M City was illuminated by twinkling lights, sparkling and colorful.
Following behind Adrian, she entered the doors of "Sound and Color." He was a regular here. As soon as he entered, a waiter took his car keys and coat, leading him to his usual private room. Vanessa walked behind, like an invisible person.
The moment she was led through that door, she became the focus of attention.
But those gazes, to varying degrees, were filled with a desire to watch the spectacle. The dazzling lights shone on her face, and Vanessa instinctively lowered her head to hide. She could hide from the light, but she couldn't hide from the mocking and sarcastic words.
"Adrian, who's this? Aren't you going to introduce her?"
Adrian didn't need to say anything. Someone chimed in, "Are you blind? Don't you recognize Miss Voss?"
The status and respect she had worked so hard to maintain in the past had become a sharp blade today, returned to Vanessa herself.
Adrian slumped into the sofa, raising his voice to call out to Vanessa, "Perfect timing, let's consider this a welcome banquet, come –"
Under the shifting lights and shadows, Adrian silently gave the group in the shadows a wink. They understood what he meant. So, they were going to force her to drink and mess with her, huh?
Their specialty.
Julian came and went, not lingering.Stacey was left behind, facing Maria's passive-aggressive remarks and the Old Master's interrogations alone. She was physically and mentally exhausted, yet couldn't blame anyone. When she went downstairs for a warm drink, Cliff was also at the water bar."Water?" He adjusted his glasses lightly and handed her the honey water in front of him. "Drink this; it's freshly made.""Thank you." Stacey took it, the melancholy on her face impossible to hide."I heard Aunt Blain caused you trouble?" Cliff comforted softly, as if speaking on Julian's behalf. "Don't worry, Julian never wrongfully accuses anyone."That was true. But that wasn't what Stacey was worried about. "Bro, you said before that Miss Brooks wouldn't be with Julian. Is that true?""It's true, but Vanessa was kicked out by Uncle Voss and is pregnant now. Her current situation is hard to say. After all, if she's not with Julian, she has no other options, don't you think?"This couldn't be cal
Pulling Auntie Blain away, Jerry finally let go. She adjusted her shawl, brushed back her hair, and steadied her nerves."Auntie Blain, please, don't come here again. Mr. Frost is already furious." Jerry's advice was well-meaning, but Auntie Blain wouldn't listen."You're the one who told Julian, aren't you?"Jerry was helpless, truly wondering how the gentle Stacey could have such a rogue aunt. "If Mr. Frost hadn't come and something serious happened, it wouldn't be something you could bear the consequences for.""I'm going to beat that hussy's child out of her, so she doesn't get ahead of herself just because she's carrying some bastard!""Auntie Blain!"Getting out of the car, Stacey hurried over, grabbing her aunt's arm, her expression a mix of panic and nervousness. "Jerry, what happened?""You can ask her yourself," Jerry said, a slap mark still blooming on her face from the unwarranted blow. "Miss Vanessa's health is already delicate. Charging in to hit her like that... Mr. Fro
After spending a night in the hospital, Vanessa was discharged in the afternoon.Julian didn't appear, sending Jerry to pick her up instead. Vanessa, neither warm nor cold, entrusted Jerry with a message for Julian, "Tell him, if he can't meet my conditions, he shouldn't bother coming to see me again for a while.""Miss Brooks..."Jerry felt profoundly troubled on Julian's behalf. "Your conditions are indeed a bit unreasonable. Mr. Frost has already done his utmost to meet them for you... his solution isn't bad at all, actually.""If you think it's so good, then *you* marry him," Vanessa said calmly, yet her words were sharp enough to completely silence Jerry.Knowing full well he couldn't win an argument with Vanessa, Jerry quietly shut his mouth. "Miss Brooks, the discharge procedures are done. We can go."He walked ahead and opened the ward door. A figure swiftly darted past him. Before Jerry could even react, the person had rushed up to Vanessa, raising a hand without a word and d
The deep night after midnight grew even colder, the wind like blades.Julian had quit smoking for many days but relapsed. In the brief time he'd been in the car, he'd smoked three or four cigarettes, his face etched with fatigue, eyes sunken from days of restless nights. The car stopped downstairs at the Frost family residence. He hadn't gone up in a long time, tilting his head back, exhaling smoke with a blank, numb expression. His mind was filled with memories of Vanessa at twenty, hugging him, clinging to him, her chin tilted up as she gazed at him, her eyes brimming with warm, vibrant love.It was intense, enough to melt his cold heart. But in a blink. He was back in that hospital scene. Her eyes were hollow, devoid of all youthful sparkle. She had probably cried too many times, the corners of her eyes red and swollen, almost raw from tears. Her lashes drooped, expressing both loss and hatred, as she spoke hoarsely: "If only I had a knife, I would drag you down with me."She wante
The news of Vanessa fainting reached the Frost family, and the most restless person was Stacey. She went upstairs, locked her door, trembling with anxiety and panic. A sudden ring from her phone made her jump. It was her aunt, and the moment she answered, a torrent of scolding assailed her."Stacey, did you see that? Look what happened now," her aunt’s voice was sharp, every word fueling Stacey’s terror. "That little hussy Julian keeps outside is coming for your position. She’s pregnant, Julian likes her, divorcing you and marrying her is only a matter of time. Let's see if you can still sit around doing nothing now?""Julian said he wouldn't…"Stacey’s words lacked any conviction. After all, when Vanessa had heard their plan that afternoon, the attitude she displayed wasn't satisfaction or contentment. Instead, she was riddled with resistance, and Julian’s stance was unconditionally on Vanessa’s side.
The call hadn't ended yet. Julian stood upstairs, gazing down at the two women below.Stacey explained softly, her patience boundless, like an older sister. Yet, Vanessa's expression across from her was far from what was expected. After a long, tense moment, she uttered something inaudible, then abruptly rose, snatched her bag, and walked out.A terrible premonition.Julian hung up the phone and hurried downstairs. "What's wrong with Vanessa?"Stacey's innocent facade was plastered across her face, her words coming out in a slight stammer. "I... I just explained the whole situation to her. I didn't know she'd have such a strong reaction."Julian swiftly pursued her, catching up to Vanessa just as she was about to leave. He seized her hand."Vanessa."A fresh pang shot through her hand.Vanessa yanked her hand free, shoving Julian hard. The tears glistening in her eyes were a calculated act. She gave him a scathing look, then sw
Clutching her bag, she shook her head, the refusal laced with bitterness, "You can decide the time for the next lesson. I'm free whenever.""Okay." Harvey didn't press, walking her to the elevator doors and watching her disappear inside. The way she looked, she really didn't seem to
Evelyn had nothing to say. Vanessa, not wanting to make things difficult for Evelyn, moved her lips and said in a very weak voice, "Aunt Evelyn, I'm okay...""How can you be okay?" Evelyn turned to look at her. "Vanessa, don't be afraid. If he bullies you, tell me. Don't be afraid..."
"Still, she raised her, and has the right to ask.""What do you want me to do?"The Old Master took a deep breath, "I want you to stop bothering Vanessa. If you want to find a woman or keep a mistress, isn't that simple? You can't escape the marriage with the Lane family. Rose has c
Covered in scars, wounded all over, what was it about her that made Julian use his power to keep her here?“I think there is something,” Julian cupped her chin, his lips following the line of her jaw, engulfing her, “Otherwise, why would I be so eager to see you?”
