When I opened my eyes, Mason was already awake, watching me.

"Good morning," I said.

He said nothing, that stare of his not budging an inch.

"What?"

"Did you say yes to us," he asked, "or did I imagine that?"

I chickened out on the spot. "You imagined it."

He mumbled something under his breath I didn't catch. I made a move to get up, but he was faster, pulling me back into him.

"Not so fast. You owe me a proper good morning."

I wriggled free. "I need to get out of here before Lior wakes up and

  • Mr. Hayes’ Secret Heir   CHAPTER 86

Looking at Mason's face, I could tell he meant every word. If I pushed back too hard, this would turn into an actual argument, and that wasn't how I wanted to start the morning.I walked up and kissed him quick on the lips. "We'll talk about it when I get back."I turned to leave. He caught my wrist and shook his head. "That's not going to work.""Mason, please. Nicholas is outside. I don't want to be late."His jaw tightened. "Then I'll drop you myself.""That's ridiculous, and you know it." I ticked it off on my fingers. "Lior's school, your office, and my job aren't anywhere near each other. We'd drop him first, then swing back around to get me to work before you could even make it to yours. Or I just get in the car that's already outside and you don't waste an hour driving in circles. You know I'm making sense."He didn't answer right away, calculating, while my phone buzzed against my palm, Nicholas calling again.Mason glanced at it. "Did you tell him yet? That you're my girlfri

Just like I'd predicted, Mason refused to let me go out with Jane again that evening. Every trick I tried, nothing worked. Every promise I made got a firm no."We agreed only on seeing her in the morning," he said, like that settled it. "If you and Jane want a real hangout, do it on one of her free days. I'll even cover her traveling expenses to LA. But I'm not sharing you with anyone on this trip."I teased him. "This is giving very controlling boyfriend energy, you know that?”That made it worse. He took both our phones, switched them off, and hid them somewhere I never found. It was funny, honestly, how fiercely he held on to me. I didn't get the phone back until we were already boarding the jet home.I never told him about Nina. Ruben was back behind bars, sure, but that didn't answer how he'd known to find me at that ice cream shop. I didn't want to read too much into it. But it didn't feel like coincidence either. When we landed in LA, the driver took us straight to Mason's pare

You know that look, the one you get when trouble finds you and your worst enemy just happens to be standing right there. That was exactly Nina's face when she saw me."What's going on here?" I asked again. One of the men waved a hand at me without even turning fully around. "You're not deaf. You're better off minding your business."I ignored him and looked at Nina instead. "What happened?"She started explaining through tears, her voice shaking so badly I couldn't make out a single word of it."Get up first," I told her.“Don't you dare!" the taller one barked."Nina. Trust me. Get up."She weighed it, glanced between them and me, then pushed herself to her feet."Now. Tell me what happened, calmly, so I can follow."She pulled in a breath, steadying herself. She cleaned for them, and had just finished for the day, on her way out, when they accused her of stealing a watch. She swore, desperate, that she hadn't touched it, begging me to believe her, swearing on her own life before the

Mason didn't let us go anywhere the first day.We spent it wrapped up in each other, no clothes, no interruptions. Food showed up, got eaten. Showers stopped being about getting clean, him whispering things in my ear that had me grinning ear to ear. Sleep, wake up, start all over again.I had zero complaints about the first day. By the second morning, though, I was working on him to let me go see Jane.Left to him, we'd have spent all three days exactly like that. I finally got a grudging yes out of him. He decided to use the opening to run an errand of his own, but not before dropping me off to see Jane first. She still worked at the hotel, though not as a cleaner anymore. Mason had seen to that. When I walked in, she was stuck in a department meeting, so I went around greeting my old coworkers instead. They were happy to see me, but I noticed the way whatever gossip had been going died the second I got close, all of them suddenly careful with their words. I even tried cracking a few

Mason's mother took one look at our joined hands and didn't bother hiding her disgust."So," she glanced at Mason, "she's living here with you."I couldn't tell if it was a question or her stating the obvious."Good morning," I offered, mostly out of instinct."There's nothing good about this morning." She turned to me and gave me a glare that had me looking at the ground, before she faced Mason. "Could you explain what's happening here? Why is she staying here?""There's nothing to explain.""Is that what you think, really? You don't see how bad an idea this is?" She gestured at me like I was nothing. "She can't be in your house. Especially with Naomi able to come and go as she pleases."Mason let out a breath, long and frustrated. "Why don't you get to the actual reason you're here, Mom. You can see we're about to leave." He nodded toward the suitcase by the door. Her eyes cut to it, then back to me, like the suitcase was somehow my fault too."I called you after you left," she said

The shot came from Mason's driver. He fired straight at Ruben's hand, and the gun dropped from his grip. He had Ruben pinned before I could process any of it."Mia." Mason's hands were on my shoulders, his voice cutting through the ringing in my ears. "Get in the car. Take Lior home."That snapped me out of my frozen state. I grabbed his face, checking him over. "Are you hurt? Mason, are you—""I'm fine." He steered me toward the driver's side. "Please. Get Lior out of here. I'll be right behind you. I promise."My hands were shaking so badly it took two tries to get the door open. I don't remember much of the drive beyond gripping the wheel too tight and forcing my breathing to slow so Lior wouldn't feel how scared I was."Where's Dad? What happened?" he asked from the back seat, his voice small."A man got upset and got scary." I kept my voice from shaking. "Daddy's driver kept everyone safe. Daddy's fine. He'll be home soon.”"Is the scary man gone?""Yes. He can't hurt anyone now.

The moment I stepped into the kitchen, my steps stalled.Freshly used plates sat in the sink, smeared with sauce, half-eaten chicken bones left behind. Napkins and glasses were pushed to the side like they’d been dropped there without a second thought. They had already eaten. Not long ago, either.

“Mason… how did you even find—”The words barely left my mouth before he took my hand and led me straight to his car parked outside.“Mason…”“Get in.”The way he said it shut everything down. Whatever I wanted to ask stayed stuck in my throat.I got into the back seat. He slid in beside me, the do

MiaFrom the hotel, I drove straight home with only two things on my mind.First, I needed a shower. After that, I would go through everything I owned to see if there was anything worth selling. I couldn’t risk putting all my hope on Mason. The house lights were on when I walked in, and the sound o
