The drive down the California coastline was supposed to be relaxing.

For Claire, it felt like a hostage transfer.

She sat in the passenger seat of the luxury SUV, staring out the window at the crashing ocean waves. Raphael was driving. He had flat-out refused to let the chauffeur take them, insisting that a husband should drive his wife on their anniversary trip. He drove with one hand casually resting on the bottom of the steering wheel, his other arm securely in its sling.

He was being entire

The restaurant was quiet, romantic, and dimly lit. Soft jazz played from the speakers hidden in the ceiling.Claire sat in a plush velvet booth. A glass of untouched ice water sat in front of her.She looked at her phone. The screen lit up.It was 7:45 PM.Raphael was forty-five minutes late.A polite waiter walked over, offering her a sympathetic smile. "Can I bring you some bread, ma'am? Or would you like to go ahead and order?""No, thank you," Claire said, forcing a tight smile. "I will just wait a little longer."The waiter nodded and walked away.Claire felt a hot, uncomfortable flush creep up her neck. She hated this feeling. For three years, she had eaten dinner alone at the massive dining table in the penthouse while Raphael worked late. Sitting here, staring at the empty chair across from her, felt exactly like stepping back into a nightmare.Suddenly, her phone buzzed on the table.Claire quickly snatched it up, hoping to hear his voice apologizing, saying he was parking th

Ethan was sweating. He stood in the middle of Raphael's massive office, clutching a tablet to his chest like a shield."Raphael, you cannot be serious," Ethan said, his voice completely panicked. "You hired a new COO without telling me? What if they are terrible? What if they want to fire me?""I am not going to fire you," a cool, smooth voice echoed from the doorway. "Unless you cry. I do not like crying."Ethan spun around.A woman walked into the office. She was tall, wearing a perfectly tailored black suit that looked sharper than a knife. Her hair was a striking, icy silver, pulled back into a very practical, grounded bun. She had sharp features and cold blue eyes. She looked like a legendary assassin from an action movie."Ethan," Raphael said from his desk, completely relaxed. "Meet Zoya. She is the new Chief Operating Officer of Kingston Corporation."Zoya walked forward. She didn't offer her hand. She just looked Ethan up and down."You are the Vice President," Zoya said. She

The elevator doors opened on the top floor of Kingston Corporation. The entire executive floor went completely silent.Raphael stepped out. He wore a sharp black suit. He looked incredibly well rested. His dark eyes scanned the room, but the usual freezing glare was entirely missing.Ethan was standing by the reception desk. He held a coffee cup in front of his chest like a shield."Good morning," Raphael said.Ethan blinked. He looked around to see if Raphael was talking to someone else."Good morning, boss," Ethan whispered, taking a cautious step back. "You are smiling. Why are you smiling on a Monday?""It is a beautiful day," Raphael walked toward his office. "Bring me the Halcyon reports."Ethan followed him inside like a very confused puppy."The board is terrified of you right now," Ethan said, dropping a blue folder on the large mahogany desk. "They think your good mood is a trick. Davis actually asked me if you were planning to fire everyone before lunch.""I am not firing a

The two-week Kingston Holiday went by in an absolute blur.Claire stood in front of the full-length mirror in the master bedroom. She smoothed her hands down the sides of the blood-red silk dress. It was the exact same dress Maya had smuggled into the penthouse two weeks ago. The one Raphael had threatened to never let her take off.The bathroom door clicked open.Raphael walked out, adjusting the cuffs of a sharp, tailored black suit. He stopped dead in his tracks. His hands dropped to his sides. His dark eyes slowly dragged from the hem of the red silk, up the dangerous curve of her waist, to the delicate straps resting on her bare shoulders."You wore the red dress," Raphael said. His voice was instantly an octave lower."I told you I was going to," Claire smiled, turning around to face him. She grabbed a pair of black stilettos. "Do you like it?""I hate it," Raphael stepped closer. His eyes were burning with that familiar, hungry possessiveness. "I hate it because I have to let y

"This is mathematically impossible."Raphael glared down at the sticky, lumpy mess of dough sitting on the expensive marble kitchen island. He was wearing dark sweatpants and a tight black t-shirt. There was a streak of white flour smeared right across his cheek."It is just flour and eggs, Raphael," Claire laughed. She was sitting on a tall barstool, holding a glass of red wine. She looked incredibly relaxed, wearing one of his oversized button-down shirts."It is a trap," Raphael grumbled. He tried to pull his hands away, but the dough stretched and stuck to his fingers like superglue. "I run a billion-dollar empire. I negotiate with hostile foreign investors. I do not understand why this egg refuses to bind with this flour.""You used too much water," Claire pointed out, taking a sip of her wine."The recipe on the tablet said half a cup!""You used a coffee mug, Raphael," Claire smiled, pointing at the massive ceramic mug sitting near the sink. "That is not half a cup."Raphael lo

Ethan stared at the massive stack of blue folders on his desk. He wanted to set them on fire.He was sitting in the Vice President's office of Kingston Corporation. It was 6:00 PM on a Thursday. He was supposed to be at an upscale Italian restaurant right now, drinking expensive wine and making a charming first impression.Instead, he was looking at quarterly budget reports while his billionaire cousin was probably feeding his wife strawberries in bed.Ethan picked up his phone. He let out a long, painful sigh and dialed the number. It rang three times."Hello?" a sweet voice answered."Hey, Vanessa," Ethan said, rubbing his eyes. "It's Ethan. Look, I am so incredibly sorry, but I can't make it tonight."The silence on the other end of the line was freezing."You are canceling," Vanessa said flatly. "Again.""I know, I know! It is terrible," Ethan pleaded, running a hand through his hair. "But we have a massive corporate crisis. And by crisis, I mean the CEO literally abandoned the co

Claire’s brain went into complete panic mode.Raphael’s dark eyes were narrowed, scanning her face for the slightest twitch. His thumb was still resting against the sharp lapel of her power suit. He was entirely too smart. A few more seconds of this, and he would figure out she was hiding something

A week later, the private VIP suite in St. Jude’s Hospital felt like a ticking time bomb.Raphael was fully dressed in a crisp black button-down shirt and slacks, looking completely out of place in the sterile room. The bandage on his forehead was gone, leaving only a fading bruise, though he still

"I broke his heart?" Claire let out a sharp, bitter laugh, keeping her voice low so she wouldn't wake the man sleeping in the bed. "Are you insane, Ethan? He broke mine. He broke it into a million pieces, ground it into the marble floor, and didn't even notice the mess.""Keep your voice down," Eth
