LOGINThe moment my lips touched Keanu’s, his whole body went rigid. For a moment, I was sure he was going to shove me away.
He didn’t.
Instead, I felt his hand on the back of my head as he deepened the kiss, our lips melding. It was like zaps of electric current shooting through my veins. His tongue brushed over my lips, but just as I was about to open up, a high-pitched shriek broke through the moment.
“What the fuck?!”
I broke the kiss, but I didn’t look at Max. My gaze remained on Keanu, my heart thumping inside my chest. His eyes were dark, unreadable.
I was beginning to question the wisdom of what I’d just done.
I had just kissed my boss without his consent to piss my ex-boyfriend off. What the fuck was wrong with me? I was definitely getting fired.
“What the fuck, Ethel?” Max screeched again, his voice filled with indignation. “Did you just kiss another man in front of me?”
I finally looked at him, my irritation bouncing back. “Should I get you glasses so you can be sure of what you saw next time?”
“No, this is bullshit. You’re just trying to make me jealous.” Max shook his head resolutely as he reached for my hand. “But babe, we can work this out.”
“Let go of my woman!” Keanu’s voice was low and dangerous.
My woman.
I knew he was only playing along, but I couldn’t help the shivers that cascaded down my spine. Especially when he wrapped his arm around my waist and pulled me flush to his body.
Max’s eyes flashed with murderous intent. “No, she’s mine!”
Before I could anticipate his next move, he lunged forward. I gasped, sure that he’d just punched Keanu.
But Keanu was faster.
He caught Max’s fist just in time and gave it a ruthless twist. Max yelled out in pain, “Son of a bitch.”
Keanu continued to twist, his lips stretched in a smile that held no warmth. “Don’t throw a punch unless you can make it land, Anderson.”
He finally let go of Max, who stumbled back, staring at him, eyes wide. “How did you know my surname?”
The corner of Keanu’s lips twitched, his expression calculating. “What do you think?”
The air was so thick with tension you could cut through it with a knife. I knew it needed to end before this escalated any further. The last thing I needed was more attention on me.
“Max, just go away. You and I are done.”
Max looked at me, and his lips curled in disgust. “I should’ve known that all those nights you claimed you were going to a meeting, you were actually whoring yourself out to your boss. You had the audacity to act all offended when you saw me with Tanya, but it turns out you’re nothing but a slut.”
“One more insult out your mouth,” Keanu’s voice rang with warning, “and you’re going to be lucky if you return home with any of your perfect teeth intact.”
Max opened his mouth as if to do just that, but taking in the dark storm on Keanu’s face, he shut it right back up. Turning, he stormed back in the direction of his apartment building like he couldn’t get away fast enough.
Now I was left alone with my boss to face the consequences of my actions.
My cheeks on fire, I forced myself to look at him. “Thank you, Mr Martell. For helping me out. And…” I cleared my throat. “And for playing alo—”
“You used me.” Keanu cut me off, his dark cyan eyes pinned right on me.
When he closed the distance between us, it took everything in me not to take a step back.
“You used me, Ethel,” he repeated, the corner of his mouth twitching. “Nobody uses me without giving me something in return.”
I swallowed hard. “I’m sorry, Mr Martell. That crossed a line. I… I’ll understand if you want to fire me for that.”
A dark chuckle left his mouth. “Fire you? I didn’t ask for an apology, Ethel, and I’m certainly not firing you. I just want you to tell me—”
He took my chin between his fingers and angled my head to look him straight in the eye. “What are you willing to do for me in return?”
My pulse was racing. What did he want in return? Why did I feel like I already knew?
“I… I don’t know,” I whispered.
His lips stretched into a smirk. Then he let go of my chin and stepped back, giving me space to finally breathe freely again.
I cleared my throat again. “Uh, thank you for helping me out. Really. I’ll go home now. Goodnight.”
I turned to continue on my way like my house wasn’t miles away, but Keanu’s voice stopped me.
“Does your ex-boyfriend have a key to your house?”
I nodded as I turned to face him again. “Yes.”
After Max had given me the spare key to his apartment, it’d only felt right that I reciprocate. He’d never used it though, as I was the one who went to his place most of the time.
“Then you’re not going to your house tonight.”
I blinked. “What?”
“You’re not going to your house tonight,” Keanu repeated. “You’re coming to my penthouse with me.”
It took several seconds for his words to truly register.
“Wh…What?”
Keanu looked at me impatiently, like I was a five-year-old he needed to explain something basic to. “It’s too late to have somebody replace the locks, and that guy has a spare key he can use to get in. You can’t sleep there tonight. I’ll take you to my house. Then you can have the locks replaced tomorrow.”
I bit my lip, realizing what he said made sense. But that didn’t mean I had to sleep at his house.
“Thank you for the offer, Mr Martell. But I’ll just call my friend. She’ll come and—”
“What, Ethel?” Keanu cut me off, raising a brow, daring me. “Are you scared of being in the same house as me?”
“No, of course not,” I quickly said. “Why would I be?”
It was a challenge, and I knew it. Yet I had fallen right into it. It shouldn’t have been an issue, but since our little exchange this afternoon, being around Keanu made my pulse trip all over itself in a way it’d never really done before. Then again, until today, he’d never looked at me like he wanted me to be his next meal.
“Good. I’m going to drive you to your house so you can pack an overnight bag. Then I’ll take you to mine.”
Without waiting for me to protest, he walked toward his sleek black Maybach and opened the door, waiting for me to get in.
Oh God, what have I gotten myself into?
~~ETHEL~~Later that night, I was lying in bed, Maya asleep beside me, when I heard the door creak open. I sat up, my heart jumping.Keanu slipped inside, moving silently across the room. He paused when he saw Maya sprawled across the other side of the bed, then reached for my hand and pulled me gently out of bed."What are you doing?" I whispered."I couldn't wait," he murmured, guiding me toward the door."Keanu, she'll kill us.""Then we'll be quick."We stepped out into the hallway, and I let out a breathy laugh. "You couldn't wait one more night?"He pressed me against the wall, his hands finding my waist. "Not a chance."He kissed me, slow and deep, and I sighed blissfully because God knew it was torture following Maya's rules."I can't wait for you to be my wife," he murmured against my lips.I smiled, my arms looping around his neck. "I can't wait to be your wife."A sudden flutter went through my belly. The baby had just kicked. I gasped. I'd felt it move many times in the pas
~~ETHEL~~I stood at the window, staring out at the view of the ocean crashing on the shores as the sun began to dip towards the horizon, one hand resting on the swell of my belly. All I could think about was that tomorrow I was going to marry Keanu Martell. The thought still made my chest flutter.Keanu and I had talked about eloping. It had seemed like the easiest option—just the two of us tying the knot somewhere far away. But I couldn't stand the thought of Maya and Sharon not being there. They'd been our biggest supporters through everything, and they deserved to see this. So we'd compromised and decided on a small destination wedding at a private beach house Keanu had purchased. Just the five of us. Keanu, me, Maya, Edwards, and Sharon. No one else knew about the wedding, not even Catherine. Keanu's mother had eased up over the past few months, and the two of us had become cordial even though we were a long way from being friends.Maya appeared in the doorway, her arms full of w
~~KEANU~~"I think I'm pregnant."For a moment, I couldn't process what Ethel had just said."Pregnant?" The word came out rough, like it was my first time hearing it.Ethel nodded, her eyes searching my face. "I've been feeling nauseous and lightheaded a lot lately. I thought it was because of everything that was happening. But then I realized my period was late."She paused, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. "Maya ordered two test kits last night and had me do them.""And they were positive?"We'd gone to the hospital to get her on birth control, but I'd always known there was a small possibility it could fail."And they were positive." She confirmed, biting her lip. "But tests can give false positives. I haven't been to a doctor yet."My eyes automatically shifted down to her covered belly. It looked as flat as ever and yet... there was a child growing in there. Our child. The thought was overwhelming in the best possible way."I don't care about false positives," I said. "Y
~~ETHEL~~I stayed pressed against Keanu's chest for a long time, the steady beating of his heart comforting. When I finally pulled back, I had no doubt my eyes were red and swollen. The numbness was gone, and now I just felt raw.I could feel the curious and concerned eyes of everyone around, but I didn't feel self-conscious."Beloveds, it's time to begin the sermon." The minister announced, taking the podium.Everyone standing proceeded to take a seat. Keanu's hand remained on my back as he led me to the front row."Family, friends, and sympathizers, we're gathered here to mourn the loss of a great human..."I heard the words about my father's life and the people he'd touched. I didn't absorb most of it. I just let the sound wash over me while Keanu stayed close. His presence was almost surreal. When the service ended, four men went to the front to close and pick up the casket, leading it outside. The recessional piano played as everyone got up to follow. It was time to cremate his
~~ETHEL~~"I am so sorry for your loss, Ethel. Your father was a good man. My deepest condolences." The older woman tapped me sympathetically on the arm."Thank you, Mrs. Morrison," I said, nodding in what I hoped was an appreciative way.I hadn't been prepared for how draining it was to have so many people wanting to sympathize with me. I'd almost forgotten just how many people had loved and appreciated my father as a person.Almost a hundred and twenty people had showed up to the chapel after hearing about Dad's death one way or the other. In front of the church, Dad's casket was open for those standing around to see him.People came up to me one by one and spoke about him in the best way. They told stories I'd never heard before about his kindness, his humor, the way he'd helped people without ever expecting anything in return. It aligned with the man I'd always known, not who I'd found out he once became. It had been two days since Edwards had come to my apartment. I'd been sittin
~~KEANU~~The bastard's face went white. For a moment he just stared at me, his mouth opening and closing like a fish gasping for air."I don't know what you're talking about," he finally recovered. "You've got the wrong person. I've never killed anyone in my life."He tried to move past me. Edwards grabbed him by the shoulders and slammed him back down onto the couch."I don't know anything, I swear." Carlos insisted, his voice rising."David Sterling confessed everything before he died."Carlos froze, the color completely draining from his face. "That can't be true. David didn't turn himself in to the police. I would have known."If I had any doubt, his response had completely cleared it."David didn't turn himself in," I agreed. "But that doesn't mean he didn't make the confession."The bastard still had the guts to deny it. "I...I don't know what you're talking about."Something snapped inside me. I moved before Edwards could stop me, my hand closing around his throat. I lifted hi
