Dante

The sun streaking in from the drawn curtains pulls me from deep, restful sleep. The first thing I do is reach over, hoping to come across a warm, soft body.

But the bed is empty.

I open my eyes to see for myself, sighing when I find that the woman I was with—brunette, pale pink lips with a stunning figure is no longer in my bed.

Cradling a flicker of hope that she might have decided to stick around, I drag myself from the bed, naked, and walk to the door. I open it and step into the living room, but she's nowhere to be found. Glancing over my shoulder, I realize her clothes aren't in the bedroom either.

She's gone.

"Oh well," I murmur.

It's not the first time a woman has left me alone in a hotel room, but this one made a particular impression on me. I caught her as she walked into the bar last night—her dark hair falling down her shoulders, the careful strides, like she was aware of her every move.

It was different from the others who walked in, laughing with their partners or friends. I could tell she didn't want to be there, but there was something else about her that I could place my finger on.

Until I kissed her.

A firestorm.

The kind you don't expect until it hits you, consuming you while. Her skin…soft under my hands, her moans needy and without a care in the world.

I wouldn't have minded having another night.

My phone's shrill ringtone fills the air, and I break out of my reverie, picking up my pants and digging it out. It's my assistant, Giorgio.

"What do you have for me?" I ask.

"The investors have agreed to your demands," he says, and my lips curl into a satisfied smile. "I set up a meeting with them in an hour. Your favorite restaurant."

"Good," I respond, walking to the closet and throwing the door open. I pick out a tie and toss it on the bed. "Make reservations for dinner too. Something with fish."

"Yes, sir."

Giorgio goes silent, but I sense he's not telling me everything. "What's the matter?" I ask.

He clears his throat hesitantly. "Ah..it's Miss Monroe. She says she's been trying to reach you? I wasn't going to bring it up, but she said something about signing an agreement about a property that comes to her in the event of your breakup."

I roll my eyes as my lips thin out. "Tell her that she's not getting her hands on anything, and she should be grateful that I haven't taken back what she stole from me. Impress on her," I add as I select a shirt, "the trouble she'll be in if it turns into a legal issue."

"But the publicity?" He asks, sounding concerned. I pick out a pair of pants and take it to the bed, staring at my choice of outfit.

Looks good.

"Sir?"

I run my fingers through my hair, exhaling impatiently. "I'm sure you know how to keep from exposing your bluff at this point, Giorgio. You've been working for me for three years."

"Yes, sir."

I end the call after, tossing my phone on the bed. Emilia Monroe. I knew she was going to return, the sly minx. After cheating on me with a fellow model for two years out of our three-year relationship, stealing from my home safe, and a lot of other petty crimes, she's lucky I didn't press charges.

Not that I would have gone that route, though.

There's a reason why I chose to keep the relationship secret from the public.

Thirty minutes later, in a black suit with a blue undershirt and dress shoes, I head out of the hotel and into my sports car. As I turn on the ignition, I reach into my suit pocket, taking out a pair of red lace panties.

"Jenna Martins," I murmur as my lips curl into a smirk.

It’s a shame she left before we could go a second time, though.

I glance at my phone as I pull out of the VIP parking lot, contemplating calling my assistant for a few seconds. Her smell fills my car and my thoughts stray back to last night…her soft skin, and the red lace slipping down luscious thighs, joining cotton jumpsuits on the floor.

I close my eyes briefly, savoring the thrill that races down my throat, settling below my belt as I picture her hands wrapped around me.

I don’t hear the sound of the other car coming, ignoring the red light at the intersection. Neither do I see it head directly for my car, not until it’s too late.

I try to veer away, but my car spins out of control, the sound of tires screeching and metal scraping piercing my eardrums. The car flips over—in slow motion, suspended in air one moment and landing on the asphalt in the next.

Glass implodes and I feel a sharp pain race through my body. I try to move, but I can’t feel my limbs.

I can’t feel anything either, except for the slow trickle from the side of my head. It smells like copper…like blood and fuel.

“Help,” I whisper hoarsely. “Help please.”

My vision blurs with dark spots as my head swims, the darkness dragging me under.

JennaMy feet felt like lead as I walked out of the elevator. The top floor was dead quiet, and the carpet was so thick it swallowed the sound of my shoes against it. I held the thick manila folder against my chest like a shield. Inside were the final signed files that the legal team had been screaming about all afternoon.I really didn't want to be up here. This floor was Dante’s territory, and seeing him was the last thing I needed today. My head was still spinning from Tom’s threatening text messages. I had enough problems to deal with without adding Dante’s intense gaze to the mix.I walked quickly toward the mahogany desk where his secretary usually sat. The desk was empty, which was a lucky break for me."Perfect," I muttered under my breath. "I’ll just drop this off and run the fuck away from this place."I took a deep breath and gently slid the folder onto the polished wood. I turned on my heel, ready to sprint back to the safety of the elevator."Jenna," a deep voice called

Chapter 18JennaThe morning sun was way too bright for how miserable I felt. I stood by the front door, watching Chloe unpack her duffel bag on the couch."Are you sure you have everything handled?" I asked, checking my watch for the fifth time. "I can stay back a few minutes if you need to settle in.""Jenna, relax," Chloe said, waving her hand at me. "I just got back from my trip, and I'm ready for auntie duty.""Marie still feels a little warm," I warned her. "The medicine is on the counter, and she needs it at noon.""I know, I know. You've said this like a hundred times already,," Chloe laughed, walking over to give me a quick hug. "Go to work and make that money.""Call me if anything changes," I said. "Even if she just sneezes weird, you call me immediately.""I will," Chloe promised, pushing me gently toward the door. "Now leave before you're late."I took a deep breath and stepped out into the hallway. Knowing Chloe was back made my chest feel a little lighter.Marie was saf

JennaThe plastic chairs in the waiting room were freezing. Marie whimpered against my shoulder, her little body burning up.I ended up needing to take her to the hospital and called before I got there so we wouldn't have to wait for hours on end without getting attended to. "It hurts, Mommy," she whispered, her eyes were glassy and red."I know, baby," I said, rubbing her back in small circles. "The doctor’s going to help you in just a minute."The clinic smelled like bleach and old carpet. I hated bringing her here, but her fever had spiked too fast."Can we go home soon?" she asked. Her voice was barely a squeak and something tugged on my chest at her tone. "Yes, as soon as the doctor looks at you," I told her. "We just need to get some medicine to make you feel better."The nurse at the front desk looked up from her computer screen. "Jenna Miller?" she called out, her voice loud in the quiet room.I stood up, adjusting Marie on my hip. Her temperature didn't calm down and her bo

Jenna“Yes. That's technically what happens when you get married and have sex for three years. The woman becomes pregnant and gives birth to a child.” I replied hastily. “But you said you were single at the interview. I still have your response…” I cut him off before he could finish talking. “That's because my husband and I are no longer together. Now if you'll excuse me, I'd like to take my leave… Sir.”I didn't wait for his response before I walked out of the meeting room with my heart pounding against my ribs like a trapped bird. My hands were shaking so bad I could barely keep a grip on my laptop bag.I was really relieved that Dante had taken my side against Barbara in that meeting back there. He didn't let her bully me, and he didn't let her throw my hard work in the trash just to satisfy a petty grudge that I have no idea why she's holding. But that relief I was feeling was instantly swallowed up by the memory of the angry, vengeful look Barbara gave me before leaving the roo

JennaI sat in my cubicle with my heart hammering against my ribs, the cold sweat on my palms making it hard to grip the edges of my desk. I pulled my chair in tight, trying to block out the rest of the fourteenth floor.Barbara didn't believe my lie. I could still see the sharp look in her eyes when she looked at Marie, and that realization made her a threat to my secret. If she went to Dante with her suspicions, or worse, if she demanded a DNA test through her family’s legal team, my entire world would crumble. I looked down at Marie, who was back under the desk, quietly chewing on a cracker while watching her cartoon.No. This was me thinking too hard. It was a worse case scenario type of situation. "Just a little longer, sweetie," I whispered, my voice shaking as I reached down to stroke her curls. "Mommy is going to get us out of here soon."Before I could even settle down and plan my next move, my computer screen flashed with a bright blue alert. An urgent calendar invite poppe

JennaI woke up early the next morning to the sound of raspy wheezing coming through the baby monitor. I threw my blankets off, ran across the hall, and found Marie coughing heavily and burning with a fever. Her little face was bright red, and when I pressed my hand against her forehead, her skin felt like a furnace. She was so hot. Panic filled me because not only did I have a major presentation with the SalTech executive board today, but there was also no one to look after my baby. It was the presentation Dante had ordered me to give to the Monroe family reps. I couldn't miss it if I wanted to keep my job."Mommy," Marie whimpered, her little voice sounding cracked and weak. "My tummy hurts too.""I know, baby," I said, my mind racing at a million miles an hour as I wiped a sweaty curl from her cheek. "Just stay right here for a second."I ran into the kitchen and dialed Chloe's number, praying she would answer despite the early hour. The line rang until it went straight to voicema
