Elara POV

He sighed, setting down his fork, "Your father borrowed heavily from our pack seven years ago. Medical expenses for your mother, I believe. The loan was substantial, and the interest accumulated quickly. When he couldn't repay, he offered what Alphas often do in these situations. An alliance through marriage."

"So I'm collateral."

"You're a bridge between two packs. It's not uncommon."

"That doesn't make it right."

"No," he agreed quietly, "It doesn't."

Across the table, Dr. Solis was watching me with an intensity that made me uncomfortable. When our eyes met, she smiled slightly and raised her wine glass in a small toast.

"Don't mind Reyna," Kieran said, "She's always studying people."

"What kind of things does she study?"

"Everything. She's bit of a pain in the ass, but she's brilliant," He leaned closer, lowering his voice, "Word of advice? Stay on her good side. The woman knows more secrets than anyone else in this pack."

A burst of laughter drew my attention back to the head of the table.

Elena had her hand on Silas's arm, saying something that made the other senior wolves chuckle.

"I need some air," I said, standing abruptly.

"Elara…" Darius started.

"Just for a minute. I'll be right back."

I didn't wait for permission. I walked quickly toward the doors, desperate to escape the suffocating weight of the dining hall.

I found myself on a wide terrace. In the distance, I could see wolves moving through the training yards.

"Running away already?"

I spun around to find a man leaning against the terrace railing. He was tall and lean, with dark hair that fell across his forehead and he had the same ice-blue eyes that reminded me of Silas's but his own was colder and crueler.

"I'm not running," I said, "I'm getting air."

"Of course you are," He pushed off the railing and moved closer, "Let me guess. Little sister, sitting at the table, watching your replacement charm everyone in sight. That must sting."

"Who are you?"

"Kaelen Vane," He sketched a mocking bow, "Silas's younger brother. And according to certain contractual obligations, your future husband."

"That's impossible."

"Really? Did anyone tell you how the contract works? Your father promised Silas his first child. He promised me his second," he said with a sharp smile.

Silas POV

I felt the exact moment Elara left the dining hall.

The bond, which had been a constant ache in my chest all evening suddenly thin. My wolf snarled, demanding I follow her and bring her back.

Instead, I forced myself to nod at whatever Elena was saying. Something about pack logistics and supply chains. She was intelligent and had everything a Luna should be on paper.

She just wasn't her.

"Alpha?" Elena touched my arm lightly, "Are you alright? You seem distracted."

"I'm fine." I reached for my wine glass, only to find it empty.

"Please, continue,” I said.

But I'd lost interest in the conversation entirely. Through the windows, I could see the terrace. Could see…

"If you'll excuse me a moment," I said, standing.

Darius caught my eye from down the table. His expression was carefully neutral, but I'd known him long enough to read his concern.

Your mate is on the terrace with your brother, his look said. And you're sitting here with her sister.

"I need to check on something, I'll return shortly," I announced to the table.

I walked with measured steps toward the terrace doors, even though every instinct screamed at me to run. To get to Elara before…

"Congratulations, Elara. You're mine," Kaelen's voice drifted through the open terrace door. I froze just inside the doorway, hidden in shadow.

"That's impossible," Elara said.

"Is it? Did anyone explain the contract to you? Your father promised his firstborn to Silas. And his second-born to me."

"You're lying."

"Am I? Why don't you ask my dear brother?" Kaelen's smile was vicious, "Oh wait, he's too busy courting your sister to bother with details like who owns you."

I stepped onto the terrace. "Kaelen."

My brother's grin widened.

"Silas. We were just discussing the contract. I think our new guest deserves to know all the terms."

Elara's eyes met mine, "Is it true?" she asked, "Am I bound to him?"

"The contract is complicated," I said.

"That's not an answer."

"The original agreement did include provisions for both Vance daughters," I admitted, "But the primary marriage was meant to be between myself and the firstborn. Your situation is unclear."

"Unclear?" She laughed, "My entire life is unclear. I'm collateral for a debt I didn't incur, bound to men I've never met, and apparently my own mate can't even fight for me because of a piece of paper."

The word mate hung in the air and Kaelen's eyes sharpened.

"Mate?" He looked between us, "Well, isn't this interesting."

"Go back inside, Kaelen," I ordered.

"Why? This is the most entertainment I've had in months," He moved closer to Elara, and my wolf snarled, "Tell me, little mate, does the bond hurt knowing he can't have you?"

"Back off," The Alpha command rolled through my voice.

Kaelen raised his hands in mock surrender, but his eyes glittered with malice. “I'll leave you two to your moment. But Elara, the contract is binding. Whether my brother fights for you or not, you belong to one of us. It's best you start deciding which fate you prefer."

He disappeared inside, leaving us alone on the terrace.

Elara wrapped her arms around herself, staring out at the training grounds. The moonlight caught her hair turning it silver, and something about her scent…

"You should have told me," she said quietly, "About Kaelen and the full terms."

"I only confirmed the details this afternoon. I was planning to…"

"To what? Break it to me gently?" She turned to face me, "Let me guess. You're going to marry Elena to honor the contract, and I'm supposed to marry your brother to tie up loose ends."

"No," I said.

"No?"

"I won't let him have you. Kaelen is cruel and sadistic. He'd break you just to spite me."

"And Elena won't break you?"

The question hit harder than it should have, "What I feel doesn't matter. The pack needs this alliance and the debt needs to be settled."

"The debt?" She laughed again, "Tell me, Alpha, what happens if I refuse and walk away from all of this?"

"You can't."

"Watch me."

  • My Brother’s Fiancée is My Mate   Chapter 60

ElaraWhen I opened my eyes again, it was morning, and I remembered falling asleep in Daniel's arms, but he wasn't in bed.I had told him everything. Well, not everything per se. I had told him everything I felt like he needed to know because if I went any further, it was going to shatter everything, and I didn't want that.I got out of bed slowly and went downstairs only to find Daniel in the kitchen making breakfast, and from where I stood at the very end of the stairs, I just watched him closely. Not because of what Darius had said to me, but because of how lucky I felt.I knew the game Darius was playing, and I wasn't going to allow myself to fall for that. Silas was my past, and nothing was going to change that, and it was absolutely sad to see him advocating for Silas, the same person who..."You're awake," Daniel said, distracting me.I walked towards him, and without a single word, I just hugged him from behind."Wow, what is all this about?""Do you want me to stop?" I whispe

Elara"Are you being for real right now?""I need you to listen to me and listen carefully. Whoever is in there with you is very dangerous."I laughed hysterically because he was actually being for real. He was actually serious about this nonsense that he was saying to me."That is my fiancé," I snapped, "and you will show him respect. Am I understood?""Why don't you get what I'm trying to tell you, Elara? I am not doing this because I do not like the guy. I am doing this for you, for your safety, to protect you.""Protect me from what exactly?""Him. There is something wrong. I can feel it. I do not know how, but there is something off about that man. Why can't you feel it?""Oh, I get it now. There's something off about him because he's not Silas, right? And Silas was the perfect person for me.""Silas was a psychopath," Darius replied, which was a shocking answer because I didn't expect that at all, "but Silas would never do anything to intentionally hurt you, and no matter how yo

ElaraDaniel stood frozen. What he said, the expression on his face—it was pure confusion.I hadn't planned on telling him. I wasn't actually planning on telling him anything at all, but definitely not yet."I'm a werewolf," I said again."I think you need a seat," Darius said, moving away from the door and giving him enough space to step in.When he was in the room behind us, he just walked into the bed."What do you mean you're a werewolf?""Like, we shift into werewolves, and we can shift back into our human form," Darius said before I got the opportunity to even say a single word. He had this annoying expression on his face while explaining to Daniel, like he was talking to a three-year-old child."Do you think I'm stupid?" Daniel asked."What? No.""So, while you're cheating on me with some random stranger at this disgusting place, the first lie you could come up with is something from your fictional book? Elara, what have I ever done to you to make you want to hurt me this much?

  • My Brother’s Fiancée is My Mate   Chapter 57

Elara“Elara, I need you to explain to me how this is possible,” Darius slowly sat down on the only bed in this small, cheap-ass-looking hotel room.“And why the hell are you here?” I asked.“This is all I can afford.”“What?”“Can you forget about my living situation right now and let’s figure this out?”“Okay,” I said. “Can you tell me what all of this is? Because I am seriously losing my mind, and my fiancé thinks I’m crazy—which I am not.”“Take a deep breath,” he said. “Calm down. I need you to breathe, okay? Please, just breathe.”He tapped the side of the bed, and I slowly sat down.“Okay.”“So,” Darius said, “I have read about it, I have heard about it, but it is not that common. Where mates usually share this deeper connection—more than the mate bond—more than anything. Even if the mate bond is dissolved, there is this invisible thread linking the both of them together. I think that is what you and Silas have.”“Okay… okay,” I said again, trying to process every single word t

  • My Brother’s Fiancée is My Mate   Chapter 56

ElaraThroughout the night, I couldn't sleep. I just kept tossing and turning in bed.Daniel was fast asleep. I knew he had had a long day, and I wasn't going to wake him or disturb him.I just felt so restless, and what Darius had said today kept ringing in my head.Even after rejecting the mate bond between the two of us, was there some invisible string still attaching us together? That was something I didn't want. No.Did I still love Silas?I asked myself that question over and over again, and I knew the answer, but I wasn't going to accept it because I already belonged to someone else.I turned to Daniel, who was sleeping peacefully beside me, and I just ran my hand over his face. His skin was so soft, and Daniel was just so gentle. He was perfection, nothing like Silas.I didn't want to ruin what we had, but I just kept having this fear and anxiety that I would.I got out of bed, walked to my laptop, which was open on my desk, and I began writing.Writing usually calmed me down—

ElaraI kept checking the time.Darius was never usually late, but he was five minutes late, and I was freaking out.Maybe this was the wrong thing.I never should have called him.Maybe I was just having a dream, but I was so worried that I had to reach out to Darius.I wasn't sure if I made the right move because I wanted the past to stay in the past, but seeing Silas like that, seeing him half alive, I couldn't not do anything about it.Suddenly, the door to the diner opened, and there he was.It had been almost three years, and it looked like not even a single day had passed. He walked directly to where I was seated, lowered himself onto the chair in front of me, and for almost a minute, we didn't say anything to each other. He had this over-serious expression on his face, and he didn't look like the Darius I remembered. He hadn't changed a bit, but at the same time, he had changed a lot.I didn't know how I knew, but I just knew."I thought you were dead," he finally said."I jus

Silas"Are you going to say something, or are you just going to keep sitting there in silence and making me watch you stare at the patrol schedule I gave you almost an hour ago?"I lifted my gaze to meet Darius's."You don't have to be rude."He smiled."I'm not."I rolled my eyes. That was when I

  • My Brother’s Fiancée is My Mate   Chapter 21 : Regret

The ride back was a blur of cold wind and a colder silence. It was not the silence of stealth, but the silence of a tomb. The Guard moved around me like I was a piece of unstable cargo, their eyes flicking away from mine. They had seen the Alpha shatter at the door to claim his prize, only to have

  • My Brother’s Fiancée is My Mate   Chapter 20 : Rejected

The Guard moved like shadows through the shadows, and the lodge was silent. Kaelen’s guards were good, but they were perimeter wolves, used to keeping threats out, not expecting a surgical strike from within the territory itself. They never saw the men who slipped their blades between ribs, who cau

  • My Brother’s Fiancée is My Mate   Chapter 17 : The pain

The silence in my study was evident over a chaos I could no longer control. The bond was no longer a thread connecting me to Elara; it was a frozen filament, a fuse waiting for a spark. I stared at the northern window, my knuckles white on the sill, tasting the ash of my own failure with every brea
