Chapter 3

Author: Peachy
I dragged my exhausted body to Valerius's office. The door was cracked open.

I was about to knock when the voice inside froze my blood.

"Of course, darling. I miss you too." It was Valerius.

Smooth, but sickeningly sweet.

"I can't wait to see you either. Give me a few days to wrap things up here." He was laughing. Utterly devoted to his beloved.

My hand hung in the air.

He was flirting with his noble little fiancée.

Just hours ago, this man was losing his mind in my bed. Begging me with a broken, gravelly voice like a shattered madman.

In the harsh light of day, he was right back to playing the perfect fiancé.

"We have a nightmare of a meeting this afternoon." Valerius's tone shifted, heavy with dread. "Lord Cassian is personally reviewing the star readings. You don't know how terrifying he is. I need to make sure the astrologer doesn't screw up."

I shuddered.

Cassian Thorne. The Underworld God incarnate.

But I didn't care right now. I bit my jaw tight and pushed the door open. I wouldn't show an ounce of weakness to this piece of trash.

"My Lord." My voice was deadpan.

Valerius looked up. Perfectly calm. Perfectly normal.

"We report to the Lord this afternoon," he smiled gently. "Have your charts ready. Your life depends on it."

Hypocrite.

I stared dead at him. "Understood."

Afternoon. The Obsidian Hall on the top floor.

I finally saw the legendary Lord—Cassian Thorne.

The moment he turned around, I froze.

He wasn't some withered old man. He was young and devastatingly handsome.

Deep, icy gray eyes, sharp as blades, radiating a terrifying power that made you want to drop to your knees.

What stopped my breath was his clothes.

Midnight blue.

"Midnight blue is my favorite color." I had casually mentioned it to the man in my dream three months ago.

Now, the Lord of the Underworld himself was wearing it.

Just a coincidence. I desperately tried to convince myself.

"Begin." Cassian sat at the head of the table. His voice was deep, absolute.

I forced my hands to unroll the charts.

The presentation dragged on for a century. Cassian didn't say a word, but his predatory gaze scraped over my cheeks, my lips, my neck.

His hunting aura made my knees weak.

"For the next three months, the Eternal City will be safe from the Shadows." I finished the last line, my voice shaking.

Cassian stood up.

He walked around the table, coming straight for me.

His combat boots thudded against the floor, each step stomping on my heart.

He stopped inches away from me. Too close.

A freezing aura swallowed me whole. I locked up. I forgot how to breathe.

He looked down. His eyes zeroed in on my collarbone.

In my haste, my collar had slipped, exposing a star-shaped birthmark I normally kept hidden.

"That mark..." Cassian spoke.

His voice dropped low, carrying a creepy, spine-tingling familiarity.

"Very unique." He stared at my collarbone, his eyes turning impossibly dark, like a wolf staring at a throat.

Pure panic gripped my chest.

In countless dreams, that was his favorite spot. He used to whisper in my ear, thick with lust, "I want to kiss this little star... until you cry."

My mind blanked. I instinctively shot a look at Valerius.

But Valerius was staring at the floor, literally shaking.

He was just terrified of Cassian. He didn't react to my mark at all.

What the hell?

I whipped my head back, meeting Cassian's gray eyes.

He was still staring at me, a soul-shaking possessiveness in his gaze.

"I... is it?" I stammered, slapping a hand over my skin. "I'm sure it's a common mark."

The chaos in the Lost Valley finally settled.Rubble littered the ground. The air still reeked of charred magic."Take me back to the Court," I said, brushing the dust off my robes. My voice was still shaking."No." Cassian dropped his shadow ward, his face completely unreadable. "You're coming with me."I froze. "But my lord, I need to sort the star charts—""Those shadow assassins were aiming right at you." His icy gaze swept over me, heavy with absolute authority. "Go back to the Court, and you won't live through the night."A black, shadow-drawn carriage waited at the valley's edge.He practically shoved me inside. We took off, leaving the Eternal City behind.Through the window, I saw a massive castle built on a floating island."Where are we?""My private estate," Cassian said shortly. The inside was breathtakingly rich.Obsidian floors. Cassian's gaze trailed slowly up my fingers. He noticed the desperate look I'd thrown at Valerius.A flash of violent displeasure darkened his icy gray eyes. But a second later, he was back to his cold, untouchable self."Your readings are flawless." Cassian stepped back, taking some of that lethal pressure with him. "You've done the Night House a great service, Lyra. You are highly valuable."I let out a massive breath of relief at the praise.Valerius eagerly stepped up, practically tripping over himself to fawn. "Indeed, My Lord. An incredible honor. After all, everyone in the Eternal City knows you are completely ruthless and have sworn off women. Your special favor toward Lyra proves her talent...""Shut up."Cassian didn't even turn his head. Valerius clamped his mouth shut.Pale as a ghost, he slinked back into the shadows, barely daring to breathe.Cassian looked back at me, his tone leaving zero room for argument."Eight o'clock tonight.
