Chapter 1

I decided to leave Damon. But I had to do it without him knowing.

Elder Marcus drafted the Mating Dissolution Agreement quickly enough. "Get Damon to sign this. Forty-eight hours after his signature, the dissolution becomes official."

When I got home, Damon was already dead drunk—because Vivian had just left her Alpha in Northbridge.

The next morning, he woke up hungover and said, "Let's have a belated mating ceremony."

I knew what he was really doing. Trying to lure Vivian back.

I smiled and agreed. But in the stack of ceremony documents he had to sign, I slipped the dissolution agreement.

"This ceremony contract is this thick?" Damon frowned, flipping through page after page, but he didn't sign right away.

He was the youngest Alpha of the Greystone Pack, after all. Not someone easily fooled.

The dissolution agreement was tucked into the second-to-last page. I kept my head down, but my heart wasn't even racing.

"There's a bunch of indemnity clauses. If you have time, read through slowly."

He wouldn't have time.

Today was the day Vivian returned to the pack. Years ago, when Vivian chose to be claimed by the Northbridge Alpha instead of him, Damon had been so furious he claimed me on the spot. Now that Vivian had left Northbridge, he proposed this ceremony for one reason only—to make her jealous.

My mating bond was just a prop in their little game.

And sure enough—impatience flickered across his face. "I have to go pick up Vivian now. No time for this."

But beneath that annoyance, I caught it. A flash of joy.

The impatience was for me. The joy was only ever for Vivian.

He signed in a rush, then left me with nothing but his back.

We'd been mated for five years. No grand ceremony. No public announcement. Only our parents and closest friends even knew.

The truth was, Damon did feel something for me over those five years. Just not enough. Never as intense as what he felt for Vivian.

I tried to love him into needing me. Into making this house a home.

But on his face, in this house, there was never a smile.

Until the night he came home blind drunk, grinning from ear to ear. I asked around quietly, and sure enough—Vivian had left her Alpha.

I took care of him till midnight. Unlocked his phone with her birthday. Opened his photo gallery.

It was full. Almost no storage left.

Only Vivian.

Not one photo of me.

The cover image of the gallery was our mating photo—except he'd photoshopped Vivian's face over mine.

I remembered back when we registered our bond. He'd refused a ceremony but insisted on taking those photos.

Now I understood.

Right then, I knew.

This five-year bond was finally over.
