Chapter 4

Penulis: Amber Fleck
Enya's and my friends left with Enya and Ryan shortly after, leaving me behind in that empty hotel room.

The weight of everything crashed down on me at once. The next thing I knew, everything went black.

When I came to, I was in a hospital bed.

Enya dozed at my side, clutching my hand tightly.

The moment she noticed that I was awake, she shot upright.

"Eric, you're up… I went too far at the hotel yesterday. I'm sorry," she said, gently stroking the back of my hand. "The doctor told me I'm pregnant. Can we please stop fighting? Ryan and I made mistakes too, but nothing happened between us. I swear."

She took out one of the photographs I had treasured for years. Ryan and I were still teenagers then, smiling innocently into the camera.

"The friendship you two share is precious," she said softly. "It shouldn't fall apart over a misunderstanding like this. He wants to apologize to you too. He'll come by the house tomorrow. I'll stay out of the way. Will you give him a chance?"

I looked at Ryan's young, smiling face in the photo, then slowly closed my eyes and let out a sigh.

I thought of what Dad used to say when I was a boy. He had told me not to hold a man to impossible standards if he had spent his whole life fighting just to survive.

After a long pause, I nodded.

Ryan showed up the next day with everything I loved to eat in hand.

Enya waited until I had taken a few bites of it before she stood up to leave.

"Talk things through," she said, and then she was gone.

Once her car had faded from view, Ryan smiled at me.

"Do you know what I hate most about you, Eric? It's that fake generosity of yours. You hate me, but you always act like you're the bigger person. Doesn't that disgust you?"

I slowly set down my fork.

"What are you talking about?"

He ignored my question and played an audio recording instead. Their moans and breathless gasps echoed through the room, and I felt a crushing pressure closing in on me.

My body trembled uncontrollably. Even so, I forced myself to stay calm.

"I'm not falling for the same trick twice."

Then Enya's voice came through the speaker.

"I mainly handle divorce cases. If word gets out that my marriage is falling apart, it'll damage my reputation. I need you to bear with me. As compensation, I had the IVF procedure done using your sperm instead."

I had never told anyone about the IVF—not even my closest friends.

I wanted to seize Ryan by the throat and shake the truth out of him, but my arms hung limp at my sides. Only then did I realize that the food had been laced with something.

Ryan saw the horror register on my face, and his smile grew even wider. He calmly struck a match.

"Eric, if this house goes up in flames, who do you think Enya will choose to save?"

I fought to keep my composure as I said, "If Enya is what you're after, you can have her."

Before I could say another word, Ryan's slap cracked across my face. "Who the hell do you think you are, saying I can have her?"

His eyes twisted with hatred. "You still make me feel like I'm beneath you. You talk about our friendship, the tuition you paid, the things you gave me, like they're proof that you're better than me. But they aren't. You were just born into a life I never had. So tell me, why do you think that gives you the right to judge me?"

The flickering flame cast light across his twisted features. For the first time in 13 years, I saw him for who he really was.

"The world belongs to the strong," he said. "Idiots like you deserve to be eliminated."

With the match still burning, he called Enya.

"Enya! Eric started the fire! He's trying to kill me!"

In the split second before the fire consumed everything, Enya rushed through the flames without hesitation and pulled Ryan to safety, leaving me trapped beneath the collapsed roof.

When I finished recounting everything, I turned my gaze to Oscar.

"Everything I did to Ryan was nothing more than giving him a taste of what he had done to me."

Oscar shot to his feet and ordered, "Send a team to Eric and Enya's former residence immediately! Ryan's remains are most likely still there!"

The police searched the property. Before long, they discovered a box of cremated remains belonging to an adult man.

In the observation room, Enya stood behind the glass, her face wet with tears.

"I'm not saying that Ryan was innocent, but you had the law on your side! You could have taken him to court! Why did you choose to become a killer?"

I met her eyes without flinching.

"If I had died in that fire, how exactly was I supposed to take him to court? So tell me, Enya—are you crying because you're afraid of what the law will do to me, or because Ryan is dead?"

She froze.

Before I could say anything else, Oscar burst through the door.

"Eric, those ashes don't belong to Ryan! You've been playing us all along!"

I smiled.

"I never said they were Ryan's. They're my father's. And if everything between Ryan and me had started and ended with that fire, then why did I go on to kill five more people?"

As we walked back to the station, Oscar broke the silence. He said, "Eric, I need to apologize. I was wrong to think you killed Ryan because of Enya."I smiled and shook my head. "It's fine. Maybe Enya overestimated how important she was to me."What I never expected was that Enya would request to visit me.When I saw her through the glass again, her hands were trembling so badly that she could barely hold the receiver."Eric... I'm so sorry..."She wept like a child."I had no idea you had gone through all of that. Back then, Ryan and I truly had nothing between us. I met him first, but the person I fell in love with was you. You were the only one in my heart from the very beginning, Eric."He lied to me. He told me those tragic stories about his past and made me feel sorry for him. I only got together with him because I wanted justice for him. I wanted to help him get revenge on you. That is why I even replaced your sperm during the IVF procedure."Divorce was never what I wa

As Ryan thrashed against his restraints, I kicked the chair over, and he hit the ground in the same position he had been in when I first laid eyes on him."Ryan, the day you ran over my father was your birthday. Did you know that even if you hadn't asked him to meet you that day, he would have come looking for you three days later on the exact date you first came to my house? That day, to my father, was the start of your new life."When you received that overseas job offer, I was even happier than you were. I told my parents before you could. That day, you asked my father whether he wanted a capable son who couldn't stay by his side, or a mediocre one who would always be there for him. My father said, 'As long as Eric is happy, that's all I care about.'"Too bad he never got to finish his sentence. Back then, he wanted to send me abroad. I gave up that opportunity and stayed in the country because of you. I would never have another chance like that in my life, but he never blamed me

I swallowed hard, struggling to make sense of his confession. I demanded, "What did you say?" Ryan lifted my chin, forcing me to face him. "Your family took me in for 13 years, so I ran your father over 13 times—one for each year I had to pretend to be grateful. From the moment you brought me to the city, do you really think you were some kind-hearted savior? "Eric, you were just lucky. You were born with everything I never had. I was the one born into the wrong family. I was the one who had nothing."I wrote that letter to reach you, lured you to that village, and let my uncle beat me—all to change my fate. I earned every bit of what I have today by myself, so why should I owe you anything? "I'm better than you, which is why Enya cheated on you. Your parents refused to accept me, so they deserved to die."His words cut deeper than any wound ever could. He threw a settlement agreement at my face. In the bottom-right corner, I saw Mom's signature, which looked like a hasty sc

As the accused, Ezra Beckett, I submitted the following statement."My father passed away in a car accident six years ago. The collision took place on a road that was still under construction, and there were no surveillance cameras in the area. "Based on statements from eyewitnesses, dashcam footage from the dealership that had serviced the other vehicle, and the traffic police's reconstruction using skid marks from the scene, the investigation concluded that my father was solely responsible."The driver of the other vehicle was Ryan. My mother signed a settlement agreement. Later that same year, she died of a stroke. My ex-wife, Enya, arranged both their funerals."Everyone involved concealed the truth from me, insisting I wouldn't be able to bear it. I lived through it all without knowing, becoming an orphan without ever understanding why. Every single day, I looked forward to the birth of the child my wife was carrying, never once suspecting that it was fathered by the man who

Five seconds later, the screen went black.Oscar's face turned deathly pale. "This isn't a live feed. It's a prerecorded video," he said.I laughed and said, "I never said it was live surveillance."A hard slap struck my face, knocking me to the ground. I felt a tooth fly from my mouth and land a few feet away. The metallic taste of blood instantly filled my mouth.Enya lunged at me and grabbed my collar. She demanded, "Where's Ryan? What did you do to him?"I silently watched the woman who had once shared my bed. Now, she was crying for another man."You just saw Ryan, didn't you? You simply failed to recognize him. Why are you yelling at me?"Oscar's face darkened. "We saw him? Where?"I lazily pointed back the way we'd come."Right there. Ryan was all beneath that overpass. You spent ten minutes driving over him. Not one of you looked back."All that followed was the heavy crash of Enya's knees slamming onto the concrete. Her eyes rolled back, and she collapsed like a pu

From that point forward, I stopped living as Eric Beckett. After everything I had endured, I chose to become Ezra, the man who would make them pay.Oscar lunged forward and seized me by the collar. "Where's Ryan's body, Eric? We already have enough evidence against you. Stop playing games."A faint smile crossed my face. "I have no idea where Ryan's body is. I only know where the living Ryan is."Everyone in the room froze. "Ryan's alive?"Tears streamed down Enya's face as she dropped to her knees. "Thank God..."But Oscar wasn't buying it. "Are you trying to drag this out? Our investigation shows that Ryan had no connection to the other five victims. You still haven't told us why you killed them."I held up my shackled hands. "I'm a dead man walking. I've got nothing to lose. It's Ryan who's running out of time."Oscar instantly tensed. It had already been five full days since my arrest. If Ryan had truly been imprisoned without food or water for all that time, h
