Chapter 3

Author: Green Spark
"You're mad I missed your birthday yesterday?" Miles asked. "I got you something. I'll grab it once we're inside."

He pushed the door open, then paused and turned back to look at me, confusion clear on his face.

I walked past him, my voice even.

"The nail behind the frame came loose. It fell yesterday."

He went still, his eyes moving over me from head to toe. When he saw I wasn't hurt, he let out a relieved sigh. Without warning, he pulled me into his arms.

"Thank God you're okay."

He held me like nothing had changed.

Like there wasn't another life waiting for him somewhere else.

Miles told me to rest and went to clean up the living room. After dinner, before he went to shower, he handed me a carefully wrapped box.

I looked at him.

He brushed his hand lightly over my hair, his tone soft.

"The gift I promised you." He nodded toward it. "Open it."

Inside was a teardrop-shaped necklace.

"Do you like it? I spent a long time picking it out."

There was a time when I would have loved anything he gave me.

On our third anniversary, he picked a wildflower from the side of the road and handed it to me. I still had it.

I set the necklace back into the bag. As I did, a receipt slipped into view.

It was for a ten-thousand-dollar diamond necklace.

The teardrop necklace was listed as a complimentary item.

Phoebe had touched the diamond at her neck again and again yesterday, like she couldn't help herself.

A quiet laugh slipped out.

So this was what I was worth. The free add-on.

By the time he came out of the bathroom, I was already lying in bed, turned away from him.

He reached out and shook my shoulder gently.

"Hey."

"Don't," I murmured. "I'm tired."

He leaned closer, but I turned my face away.

He didn't push it. He just said goodnight and lay down beside me, scrolling through his phone.

As my thoughts started to blur, I heard him get up, slow and careful. A moment later, the front door clicked shut.

I got out of bed and went to the window.

It didn't take long. Miles stepped outside.

Phoebe ran straight into his arms.

Within seconds, they were kissing, like there was no one else in the world, right there under the building.

Miles had always been reserved. He rarely showed affection with me in public, especially not like that.

When he came back and pushed the door open, I switched on the bedroom light.

"Where did you go in the middle of the night?"

He flinched, froze for a beat, then forced himself to relax.

"Work called. I didn't want to wake you, so I stepped out to take it."

"Really?" I looked at him, like I was trying to follow. "Then why do you smell like perfume?"

A flicker of panic crossed his face.

"It's probably the body wash."

Listening to his lame excuse, I let out a soft sound and didn't press it.

He relaxed right away.

The next morning, we went to the diner near our place, like we always did.

We had barely stepped inside when Hector Harrington came running out of nowhere and wrapped himself around Miles's leg.

"Daddy! What are you doing here?"

Miles froze, then looked at me, thrown off. "This kid's got the wrong person. I…"

The words wouldn't come out.

I pulled Hector gently closer and said it for him.

"Hey, sweetheart. He's not your dad."

Hector burst into tears. "You're mean! He is my dad!"

Miles shoved me aside and dropped down, pulling Hector into his arms, his voice low as he tried to calm the boy.

I looked down at the scrape on my hand. Something inside me went cold.

There was nothing left to hold on to.

Just then, Phoebe hurried over and took Hector from Miles.

"I'm sorry! I should've been watching him."

"Miles," Phoebe cried, "I stayed with you for years without any real status, and this is how you treat me?"Guilt flickered across Miles's face, but it was gone just as fast. His expression turned cold."What we had didn't mean anything. I was just passing the time. The only person I've ever loved is Valerie."I glanced at my watch, frowning. Boarding time was getting close.I was still trying to figure out how to pull free from his grip when the elevator doors opened, and Jonas stepped out.Relief hit me right away."What are you doing here?" I asked. "I told you I could handle it."He didn't answer. His gaze dropped to where Miles was gripping my wrist.I looked at him, silently asking for help.Jonas reached out, grabbed Miles's arm, and tightened his grip. His voice was low and firm."Let go. You're hurting her."Miles tried to hold on, but within seconds, the pressure forced him to let go. Jonas pulled me to his side, looked me over once, then shot me a sharp look."Th

I held Phoebe's gaze steadily. "You did this to yourself."Phoebe pointed right at me, her voice shaking with anger."No, this is on you! You refused to let Miles go, so I had to do something! I put everything right in front of you, and you still wouldn't walk away! You have no shame!"The way she said it, like she was completely in the right, almost made me laugh.Miles stared at her, stunned."What are you saying? You planned all of this?"Phoebe's face went pale. She hesitated, then rushed her words out."Miles, I… I just love you too much. I couldn't stand sharing you with anyone. That's why I did it!"She reached for him, trying to explain, but he shook her off."Valerie, you heard her! This was all her. I never wanted any of it! When she said she wanted a family, I agreed to have a child with her. After that, everything just kept going. I didn't have a choice."Unbelievable. For a second, I couldn't even find the words."Miles, you cheated on me, and even now, you

After I saw the post go through, I set my phone to silent and went to bed.Maybe it was everything that had happened lately, but I fell into a strange, tangled dream.Back in college, I used to run into Miles all the time at the café where he worked part-time.One day, I had just sat down when he walked over with a cup of coffee.I looked up at him, confused. He scratched the back of his head, a little embarrassed."It's my first time making a latte. I was hoping you'd try it."I looked down at the crooked foam on top and couldn't help laughing. At the sound of it, his face turned red. After that, every time he came up with something new, he brought it to me first. Little by little, things between us shifted into something more. There was one night I had too much to drink and called him."Why haven't you asked me out? Are you not interested in me?"The next morning, I woke up to my roommate shouting. Miles was standing downstairs, holding a huge bouquet of roses, waiting fo

"Mom, I asked you to talk Valerie into staying!" Miles snapped at Brittany before turning to me. "Don't listen to my mom. She didn't mean it. I don't want a divorce."Brittany waved him off like it didn't matter."If she wants to leave, let her! Phoebe would make a much better wife. Forget about Valerie. Who else is going to marry her anyway?"I didn't have the patience to listen any longer. I pointed at the door."Get out."Miles hesitated, but Brittany grabbed his arm and pulled him toward the door. As she walked away, she turned back and threw one last line at me."I'll be waiting for the day you come begging him to take you back."The door shut behind them. I changed the code right away. The next morning, I pushed open the office door. The room went quiet almost instantly.People glanced at me, then looked away, like they had something to say but didn't know how to start. Before I could speak, the director, Theo Mercer, called me into his office. I had barely sat down whe

I slapped him across the face, putting everything I had into it."Miles, do you really think this isn't a big deal?! You cheating on me is nothing? And Phoebe causing me to lose the baby, that's nothing, too?"Before he could start spinning it, I threw the investigator's report at him.Inside were photos and records of him living with Phoebe, along with a paternity test confirming Hector was his son.His eyes widened as he flipped through the pages. He looked up at me, stunned."You had someone look into me?"I gave a faint smile."If I didn't, how would I know you've been sending her most of your money?"All these years, he told me his mother was sick, and he needed to send money home every month.I checked his bank statements. Most of his salary had gone straight to Phoebe. His face twisted, anger taking over."It's my money! I can give it to whoever I want. You make enough. Are you really missing what I bring in?"Once he started, he couldn't stop."You're always acting

The second the words left my mouth, the crowd went quiet.Miles and Phoebe clearly hadn't expected me to pull out a marriage certificate.Phoebe reacted first. She snatched it, ripped it to pieces, and snapped, "It's illegal to forge documents like that! You'll really go that far just to steal Miles?"Miles stood next to her, looking at me like I had done something to hurt him.I ignored the tight ache in my chest and let out a small smile."Fake or not, we can figure that out at the police station. Remember, you can go to jail for bigamy."A flash of panic crossed Miles's face. He straightened, putting on a calm, self-righteous look."Valerie, let's just let this go. I won't report you. Just stay out of my life from now on."He picked Hector up and turned to leave.Phoebe got what she came for. She glanced at me, satisfied, and followed him out.I stood there and watched the three of them walk away together. Something heavy and bitter seemed to be closing over me, grief and
