Brianna got back to the estate around nine.

The house was quiet. Too quiet. She walked through the foyer, past the empty living room, toward the stairs. All she wanted was a shower and sleep.

"Dinner's at eight tomorrow."

She turned.

Declan stood in the doorway of his study, glass of whiskey in hand.

"What?"

"Family dinner. Tomorrow night. Eloise will be there. Dawson will be there. I expect you there too."

Brianna's stomach tightened. "Is this mandatory?"

Declan smiled. It didn't reach his eye

The archive room was cold.Brianna stood in the doorway, her breath fogging in the dim light. Shelves stretched into darkness, filled with boxes and binders, years of records that Declan thought no one would ever find. She had been here before. The night she first discovered the Governor's photo. The night everything changed. But this time, she was looking for something different.Dawson had given her the key. Francesca had given her the location. The sealed records Declan had buried when Eloise first entered the picture. The evidence that proved everything. She walked to the back of the room. Found the box she was looking for. Old. Dusty. Taped shut with yellowing tape. She pulled it down. Set it on the table. Her hands were shaking as she opened it.The records were older than she expected.Years of documents. Contracts. Letters. Photographs. Everything Declan had tried to hide. She started with the contracts. The first one was dated three years before the wedding. Before Eloise had

The cabin was cold when they returned from the café.Brianna sat at the kitchen table, the new evidence spread before her, her mind still racing from Matteo's confession. The accounts. The transfers. The names. Everything they needed to destroy Eric was finally in their hands. But something was still nagging at her. A thread she had not pulled. She pulled the older files closer. The ones from the beginning. The ones from before she had arrived at the estate. She started cross-referencing dates. The first payment. The first transfer. The first time money had started moving in ways it should not have. She traced it back. Back. Back. Her hand stopped. The date was three years ago. The same week her mother had signed the marriage contract. She stared at the page. Her heart was pounding. She pulled another file. The payment records. The dates. The names. She matched them. Every single one.The theft had begun the same week Eloise entered the picture. She sat back in her chair. Her hands we

The cabin was quiet when they returned from Florence.Brianna sat at the kitchen table, the folder spread before her, her eyes scanning the pages for the hundredth time. The evidence was solid. The payments. The names. The connections. Everything they needed to destroy Eric. But something was missing. She could feel it. A gap in the web. A thread that had not been pulled.Dawson came up behind her. His hands rested on her shoulders."You've been staring at those papers for hours.""There's something I'm not seeing."He leaned down. His chin rested on her head."Like what?"She pointed at a series of payments. "These. They're all to the same account. But the account is empty. Whoever is receiving the money is moving it somewhere else."Dawson straightened. He walked around the table and sat across from her."How do you know?"She pulled out a separate page. "I traced the transfers. The money goes in, stays for a few days, then moves to another account. Then another. Then another.""Lay

The cabin was quiet when they returned from Milan.Brianna sat on the couch, the folder still in her hands, her mind still spinning from everything she had learned. Renzo's confession. The payments. The evidence that Eric had been behind Dawson's mother's death. She looked at Dawson. He was standing by the window, his back to her, his shoulders tight."We have everything we need," she said.He turned. His face was hard, but his eyes were tired."Almost everything.""What's missing?"He walked toward her. Sat beside her on the couch."Renzo is scared. He's been scared for twenty years. He's not going to testify unless he's sure we can protect him.""Then we protect him."He looked at her."We need to make him believe we can. And to do that, we need to show him that Eric is vulnerable."She set the folder down."Then we show him."He reached for her hand. His fingers laced through hers."We're going to need help.""I know.""Francesca has contacts. People who owe her favors. People who

Renzo led them into a dark sitting room. The curtains were drawn. The furniture was old, covered in dust. A fire burned low in the hearth, casting long shadows across the walls. The air smelled of tobacco and fear.Renzo sat in a chair by the fire. His hands were shaking. He did not offer them a seat."I knew you'd come," he said again. His voice was thin, reedy. "I've been waiting for years."Dawson stood near the fireplace. His back was to the flames. His eyes were fixed on the old man."Then you know what I want."Renzo nodded slowly. "The truth. About your mother.""Yes."Renzo looked at his hands. They were still shaking."I was paid to keep quiet. Paid to make sure she never left." He looked up. His eyes were wet. "I didn't know they were going to kill her. I swear. I thought they just wanted to scare her."Brianna moved closer to Dawson. Her hand found his."Who paid you?"Renzo's eyes moved to her. He looked at her face, at her hand in Dawson's. Something flickered in his eyes

The fire had burned low by the time they finished talking.Brianna sat at the desk, the papers spread before her, her mind still reeling from what Dawson had told her. His mother had been murdered. Eric had been behind it. And Dawson had been carrying this secret for years, alone, carrying the weight of it like it was his own fault. She looked at him. He was sitting in the chair across from her, his face pale, his eyes dark. The cut on his cheek had stopped bleeding. The firelight flickered across his features."Renzo," she said. "Your mother's lawyer. He's still alive?""Yes.""And Eric is still paying him?""Every month. Like clockwork."She pulled the papers closer. Found the page she had been reading earlier. The payments. The dates. The amounts."Then we use him."Dawson leaned forward."What?""We use Renzo. We turn him against Eric. Make him testify. Make him tell the truth about what happened to your mother."Dawson was quiet for a moment."He won't do it. He's been on Eric's

The photos slid off Brianna's lap and scattered across the floor mats of the Bugatti. Pictures of her walking to class. Pictures of her mother crying on a park bench. The glass of whiskey in Eric’s hand tilted as he took a step closer, the amber liquid swirling like his dark intentions.
