Chapter 2 Tina

Author: Bonyo
My mom snapped, "Handle him? Yeah, right! Do you really think he's brave enough to chop off Mr. Hoffman's head? He'll end up drenched in stinking blood! And if he doesn't clean up properly, he's not setting foot back inside!"

My dad stiffened, resembling a malfunctioning robot, as he dragged his feet, clumsily reaching for his backpack. I stepped in to help him strap it on. "Remember, if you run into any living people, just drop down and play dead."

Dad let out his usual croaky chuckle. "That's my specialty."

But before he could leave, my mom grabbed him by the collar. "Quit dragging your feet and get moving! You may not need to eat, but we do, and we're out of food. Just look at Mr. Hoffman—he's bulked up since this whole mess began. You? You've had the best care and all the good food, yet somehow, you're the one who's losing weight!"

Dad groaned, "You feed me pasta every day, but I'm a zombie! I choke down one serving and throw up two. How am I not supposed to lose weight?"

The door slammed shut behind him. I quickly reopened it and called out, "Hey, Dad, check the market. See if you can find any veggies or fruit."

"Ha… ha…" His croaky voice trailed off.

"Just take a look, who knows? Maybe some seeds have sprouted," I added with a shrug.

Since this was only my dad's second outing since the apocalypse, my mom was understandably anxious.

She bombarded him with a barrage of cautions: "Don't eat any of the corpses you find lying around—unless you're aiming for a stomach upset. And if anyone tries to mess with you, just bite them… No, wait, you won't actually do that. Forget it. If anyone gives you trouble, just call me. I'll handle them myself."

She was dead serious. About six months into the apocalypse, both my mom and I had discovered some serious powers.

Mine? I could hear my dad's thoughts—yes, only his. In an apocalyptic world where survival hinged on brute strength, this ability was as useful as a screen door on a submarine. The only upside was that I became his personal translator.

But my mom? She struck gold. She developed super strength—and not just the run-of-the-mill kind. Her entire body mutated.

She went through a second growth spurt, and now she was almost seven feet tall—tall and built like a tank.

Back when her evolution kicked in, the zombies in the store had already been wiped out by survivors, so she took her bat to the streets. Her technique was simple: one swing, one head. The zombie skulls shattered like watermelons under her strikes, bursting with a satisfying crunch.

Even before the apocalypse, she had been known as the toughest woman in town, but now? She was downright terrifying. A single glare from her could make my knees buckle.

My dad had it worse—he usually dropped straight to his knees.

"Are you going to sit there, or do I need to spoon-feed you myself? Look at Tina—she was top of her class, and even as a zombie, she's evolved. And you? Useless as a student, and now, just as ineffective with your abilities."

I kept my gaze low, slowly eating my porridge, yearning for a moment of peace. Honestly, I envied my dad.

All the grocery stores in town had been looted clean by survivors months ago—except for the one on Tina's street.

Thanks to my dad's hard work, he managed to clear most of the zombies from the nearby streets over the past two weeks.

He had a simple, kind nature that seemed to bring him a bit of luck.

Whenever he encountered someone he knew, he would guide them back to their homes, and most still had their keys or fingerprint locks in place. Along the way, he would gather supplies from their houses.

For those he didn't recognize, he'd take them gently by the hand and lock them up in a nearby housing complex.

But when it came to Tina? He wouldn't go anywhere near her.

She had evolved into something else entirely—her mouth could split wide open, and her tongue lashed out like a lizard's, piercing straight through the heads of both humans and zombies.

She had become more of a beast than a person, and even other zombies steered clear of her territory.

It all started about six months ago, the first time my dad ventured outside.

A group of survivors had come looking for supplies, and Tina's street was the last place in town that still had anything left.

My dad witnessed it first-hand—Tina tore through that group without hesitation. The bloodbath drew every zombie in the area, but she obliterated them all, blowing their heads off like it was nothing.

After that, my dad didn't dare go outside again.

Though he had never been the bravest—more of a coward, really—he volunteered to head out today. He said he would try to lure Tina away, just for the sake of me and my mom.

In order to stop Dad from speaking further, Mom promptly slapped him on the back of the head. Her tender ministrations immediately knocked him out cold. The air had turned eerily quiet as I looked at Ashton nervously. He shook his head, signaling that everything was fine.Meanwhile, Mr. Harris was thrilled by the discovery as he immediately rose to his feet and grabbed Mom's hand. "Currently, Derick is the only one immune to the virus. So, that makes him a great asset for research."Mom instantly withdrew her hand from his grip and immediately dismissed Mr. Harris' suggestion by saying, "You want me to hand Derick over to the lab? That's impossible!""It's really not that bad. I simply hope he can donate some of his blood from time to time," Mr. Harris said, trying to convince my mom to agree to his proposal.Even so, Mom merely answered that she would think about it. After that, we all went home. That night, Mr. Harris had his subordinate deliver several health supplements and g

Unfortunately, things didn't go as planned. A wave of zombies suddenly went berserk, nearing the year-end.As a result, my parents and Ashton had no choice but to join the anti-zombie squad.Mom and Ashton became big shots in just one day.Her height had increased until she was approximately 9'10". At this point, my mother genuinely resembled a life-sized meat grinder as she swept through a large swath of zombies with a swing of the telephone pole and kicked the cars under her feet. It was as if she was kicking a ball instead of an actual vehicle.Still, she couldn't top Ashton's aggrandizing ability. He had managed to freeze the very space he stood. As a result, all the zombies within a radius of 109 yards became paralyzed. They looked like frozen foods were ready to be chopped into smithereens.Nonetheless, Dad surpassed them all on day three.I heard it all happened when my mother tripped over a stone because of acute exhaustion. Dad assumed that she had fainted from overwork.

Ashton covered his mouth and smiled. "Your kissing skills are terrible too. By the way, it was you who wanted to kiss me."Hearing his words, I was taken aback. Then, once I realized what he meant, I felt shocked and embarrassed. He told me that he had awakened two abilities. One was an alternate space, and the other was object control. He explained that object control was through telekinesis, which counted as a psychic ability. That meant his mental strength was powerful. When he fainted at my house the second time, he was actually going through his second evolution. After that, he could hear others' thoughts whenever one's emotions fluctuated greatly. Then, I asked him when he started liking me.He thought for a long time and replied, "Maybe it was when you constantly yelled in my mind that you wanted to be my loyal servant. Or maybe it was the time you blocked the zombies for me while telling them to leave me alone in your head. Maybe it was that time you subconsciously block

At that moment, Melanie's cries and Selina's desperate pleas sounded from upstairs. For the first time, I cried helplessly.…Then, someone held my hand and pulled me into an embrace. The scent was familiar. I looked up and saw it was Ashton. He frowned as he gently wiped my tears away and said, "It's okay. I'll take you inside." Then, he held me as we stepped forward. No matter who tried to stop us or what strange abilities they possessed, they couldn't get within a meter of us. It was as if we were enveloped in an invisible barrier that no one could harm us even the slightest. In the villa's hall, a few more people charged toward us. Ashton merely glared at them, and they froze, unable to move.In the master bedroom upstairs, Melanie was tied to the bed. She was stripped bare, and her eyes widened in fear as she cried out, "Someone, save me!"A middle-aged man who only wore his underwear jumped off the bed and looked at us warily.Ashton quickly covered my eyes. "Don't look.

"Welcome aboard," said Jessica.Just as Xandra said, Jessica resembled a cold fish with a warm heart. After I thanked her, I quickly took the apple and headed back.My mom insisted we return the favor since they had sent such a precious gift. She had wanted to visit the new neighbors since the first day we arrived and was now anxiously rummaging around for something to give them."Maybe what we have the most of is what she needs the most." I reminded her.Hearing my words, my mom quickly gathered a large bag of toilet paper, sanitary napkins, towels, and socks before heading out. After some time, she still hadn't returned. Recalling how sparing those two were with words, I wondered why my mom could be gone for so long. That evening, Xavier came home.Xavier was a bright young man. He was tall, handsome, and skinny. He didn't smile much but was polite. He brought a bag of cereal and thanked us for taking care of Xandra. He also mentioned that he hoped we could look after her wh

Ever since I found out he had an alternate space, I immediately suppressed any inappropriate thoughts. After all, he must be a powerful figure. He told us that the area of his space was ten times bigger than my family's supermarkets, assuring us that we could eat as much as we wanted.Thinking about it, I felt inferior. With the current conditions, he could have any woman he wanted. He could even marry ten women without any problem. Hell, those women might even have tried to snatch him. This only proved that we were not a perfect match. As Xandra tried to pry information out of me, I kept repeatedly emphasizing I was only siblings with Ashton. In the meantime, Ashton stood at the door and looked at me coldly before going back to help in the kitchen. Then, she pointed toward the kitchen and said, "I think he has a crush on you."Hearing her words, I felt that she must have gone mad since such a thing would be impossible.
