Chapter 3

Author: Not Drunk
“Mr. Melchick, your mother was an organ donor. We’ve found recipients for her organs. Please do come and see your mother one last time.”

Mom was an organ donor?

When had she agreed to something like that?

I rushed over to the hospital. However, when I got there, I bumped into Elena and Hanson coming out of an ambulance at the entrance.

Elena hurried out on her high heels, her tone anxious. “I don’t know what happened, but my mother-in-law suddenly fainted. Her blood type is O, so I’ve gotten all the O blood from all the hospitals in the city. You have to save her!”

I was rooted to the spot as Elena brushed past me.

If she had only looked up, she would have known that I had seen everything.

But she had not.

Even though she knew that Mom had been waiting for her to bring the money to save her, Elena never cared. She put all of her effort into Hanson’s mother.

I walked with heavy footsteps to the morgue, where a doctor and nurses were waiting for me. They showed me the donation agreement Mom had signed and patted my shoulder to comfort me. “Mr. Melchick, your mother is a kind woman and is doing something wonderful! Her organs can bring joy to three families!”

My fingertip brushed Mom’s signature, and I could not help but tear up.

Mom was from a village and was illiterate.

She had spent a lot of time learning before she managed to write her own name, despite all her support to send me to college.

Mom was forever gone at this point…

Because of how she had died, I had not dared to see her a second time after her death.

I lost my composure and started sobbing loudly.

The doctor also became tearful. He did not know how to comfort me and could only hold my hand.

After a long time, I dried my eyes and faced the medical team. “I’m sorry for bringing trouble to you. Let’s not waste any more time. I’m sure Mom will be overjoyed to know that she’s saving so many people.”

They all bowed to Mom, a sign of great respect.

Just as they were about to take the organs away, a runner came in.

“Who’s the next of kin of this donor? Miss Pascal is ready to buy this donor’s heart at a high price!” the man said. His gaze locked in on me, and he explained, “I have great news for you, sir.”

He seemed to think that what he said would be something of an honor. Condescendingly, he announced, “My boss, Miss Pascal, her mother-in-law has a small heart issue and requires a heart on standby. Miss Pascal is willing to pay five million dollars for this heart. Will you sell it?”

To the man, this was a brilliant thing. After all, no one would ever reject money.

But I shook my head and rejected the offer. “This heart has already found its most suitable recipient. I won’t sell it no matter how much is offered.”

I looked at the stopped ambulance and said steadily, “My mother isn’t as high-class as Miss Pascal’s mother-in-law, so maybe it’s best you find someone else.”

I could not believe that Elena would actually do such a thing for Hanson’s mother. She was even willing to spend five million dollars on a heart!

I laughed at myself at the thought of how I had been willing to get on my knees and beg anyone to lend me some money.

How could Elena do something so arrogant?

The man, probably an assistant, turned white. He pulled out a stack of cash and shoved it into my hands. “Money isn’t a problem. Everyone knows how capable Miss Pascal is. She’s the most amazing businesswoman in this city!”

Elena personally handled the matter of Mom’s ashes. She kept nagging her staff to make sure they found the best location to put them. She smiled shyly at me and explained, “I hope Harmony will be able to rest in peace now.”A corner of my mouth twitched up. Mom was dead, so what peace could there be?Looking at a picture of Mom smiling, I suddenly recalled what had happened when I had brought her to the city. She had looked all around, curious as a child. I had once sworn to give her the best life I could. However, she suffered a horrible end just because I had chosen the wrong person to love. If not for me, she would not have given up on seeking treatment. Elena stood next to me in front of Mom’s final resting place. To myself, I swore that I would take care of Mom in another life. I would take her to see all the most beautiful scenery in the world. After everything was done, I said to Elena, who seemed to be far away in thought, “Let’s go.”“Are you finally willing to f

I saw Elena stiffen. Then, she admitted, “Yes, I’ve fallen in love with Trevor.”Although her back was to me, I could hear the sincerity in her words. “The soup Harmony cooked for me is my favorite food in the world. It’s better than any delicacy in the world. That tiny basement apartment is the best safe harbor in the world of business. I always thought of this as a game, but I fell for Trevor long ago. It was only that I did not know it. I will spend the rest of my life paying for what I did.”My heart was surprisingly calm in the face of Elena’s heartfelt confession. Once upon a time, these were the words I wanted most to hear. Elena said that she was shy and would never say that she loved me. Even during the wedding, she only blushed as everyone teased her. All this time, I always wanted her to see me and one day say that she loved me too. But I never expected her confession would come at such an inopportune time. I walked around Elena with a blank expression and looked a

“I wouldn’t be putting on this show if you weren’t afraid Elena would fall in love with that poor man! You even told her I have a heart condition! Are you trying to curse me into an early death?”It turned out that Hanson’s mother’s condition was all a lie!And it was all so I could look like a fool in front of Elena.Standing by the door of the ward, I felt like laughing as much as I did crying. Suddenly, I could not figure out what the point was in living. Because I loved Elena, both Mom and I treated her as our own family. But it was exactly because of this love that Mom had died!Just as I was about to barge in and interrogate Hanson, I heard Elena’s surprised and joyful voice behind me. “Trevor? Is that you, Trevor?”I did not turn around. I opened the door and strode in.“Hanson Sinclair, you villain!” I grabbed Hanson by the collar and swung a fist at him.“You were the one who messed with my mom’s heart, weren’t you? She only had one last wish, but you still wanted t

The doctor added, “Your mother’s organs helped bring hope and joy to two other families. I’m sure your mother will be happy about that. Besides, your mother only ever wanted to see you and your wife happy. She would want you to come out of this sadness soon.”Elena stared at the screen, unable to speak. She suddenly felt like a horrible person. She could have easily settled everything, but she had not considered it a problem at all. The woman who had prepared Elena’s lunch and sold off her jewelry to repay Elena’s debts had died just like that. Elena first called Adam to ask about Mom’s heart. Then, she seemed to recall something and quickly called my workplace. She remembered that I had told her about finding a job with a very high wage. As the sun rose outside, Elena found my boss with just one phone call. “Trevor Melchick? He got his last paycheck yesterday and left.”My boss complained to Elena in a huff, “I sent him to Cityview Tower to clean the windows there yest

“What?”Elena’s vision went dark for a moment. She asked in disbelief, “What did you say?”The doctor paused before asking for more details. “Are you related to the deceased somehow? We can’t give out too much of the donor’s personal information.”Elena grabbed the doctor’s hand and quickly explained, “I’m her daughter-in-law. Harmony Jennings is my mother-in-law.”Before the doctor could say anything else, Hanson ran out from one of the wards. He shot a look at Adam before grasping Elena’s hand. “Elena, have you discussed everything with the donor’s next of kin yet? Mom doesn’t seem to be doing very well…”Elena subtly loosened her hand from Hanson’s hold. Her tone was a mix of different emotions as she said, “We can’t use this heart, Hanson. I’ll get another one for Mrs. Sinclair, alright?”A look of displeasure flashed past Hanson’s face, but there was a hint of worry in it as well. “Is there something wrong with this heart? You know Mom’s always been in poor health. I didn’

“How is that possible?”Seeing Elena’s shocked look, Adam relaxed. “I knew there was no way that ratty-dressed man could be your husband. He’s not worth a single hair on your head! You and Mr. Sinclair are the best match, after all!”At that moment, Elena finally realized what she had forgotten. She hurriedly brought out her phone and checked it, and found that I had not texted after asking for money.Something was wrong. Something was very wrong.Usually, I would call her after only a few hours of her not responding to a text. Once, she had been stalked by some scoundrels. After learning that, I had waited for her at the mouth of the alley every day, terrified that something would happen to her. Elena came back to herself and subconsciously called me. She wanted to ask how Mom’s condition was and how much money she needed so she could find a way to get it and send it over. Elena could not leave Hanson’s mother’s side. Once she was stable, Elena would go and see Mom.She ig
