LOGINAURIELLE
My scream woke the stranger up. He jolted upright and rolled away, falling to a messy heap on the other side of the bed. Instantly, he sat up and his head began to move every which way, as if expecting some kind of threat. When his eyes stopped on me, he relaxed. "Morning, princess." he offered, his voice rough with sleep. "Don't call me that, who the hell are you?" With the energy of the pompous gigolo that he was, he leaned back against the headboard and looked at me coyly. "Surprised you didn't ask me for my name, considering all the requests you made last night." My brain quickly scrambled backward through last night. He was watching me work through it with an amused look on his face. He was giving me time to arrive at the conclusion myself. "I ordered you from that website..." I announced, mostly to myself. "Oh, my God, I ordered you from that website!" "A website?" he asked, but I was already out of bed. I grabbed my dress from the floor, my panties from the lampshade and turned my back to him, yanking everything on with the efficiency of a woman fleeing a crime scene. Which, arguably, I was. "You don't have to leave..." he started. "Here, take your balance!" I snatched my wallet from the nightstand, pulled out every note inside without counting and dropped the stack on the bed beside him. It was probably too much. I just wanted to get the hell out of there! "Thank you for your time," I hastily said to him, not looking at his face. I grabbed my bag, my phone, my dignity or what was left of it and walked out of that Airbnb without looking back. Victor was in our living room when I walked in. The second thing I spotted was the manila envelope on the coffee table. He pushed the envelope toward me. "Aurielle, sit down." I didn't listen to him. "What is that?" "Divorce papers." I smiled bitterly. "What do you mean by divorce papers?” "I have never loved you," he replied with a familiar coldness in his voice. "I am in love with Selena. I have always been in love with Selena. That will never change, no matter what you do, no matter how hard you try. You disgust me, Aurielle. You always have." “Haven't you done enough damage to me? You fucking cheater! Now, you want to divorce me?” I had imagined many versions of this conversation, but none of them had included that word "disgust" said so easily. The words shattered what was left of the love I had for Victor, to tiny pieces. I swallowed and shifted my weight on my feet. "Well, if you're deciding to do this, I might as well get my company back." Something that might have been amusement crossed his face. "You mean my company?" "I seem to remember being the one who established it." I snapped back. "Oh, stop dreaming, Aurielle. Have you forgotten that everything is mine now? Legally, it is all mine. You signed it over yourself." With a sinking sense of dread, I remembered how Victor had persuaded me to sign everything I owned over to him. Like a fool, I had trusted him. "You sick bastard!" Was all I could say to him. "Has this been your plan all along?" "Look, I have nothing to argue with you. Just check with your lawyer," he said, already rising. "Then sign the papers. Selena will be coming over to the house soon, so I'd advise you to move out immediately or she'll burn your things." I looked at the papers for a long time, and I contemplated throwing them in Victor's face, saying every single thing I'd kept quiet about in this marriage. I thought about Selena, carrying my husband's heart around all this time while I cooked his favorite meals, and trying to be enough for him. I wanted out, I was done this time. With shaking hands, I picked up the pen and signed. The signature looked nothing like me, it felt too much like surrender. When I was done, I walked out of my own house, leaving Victor and everything else behind. I didn't know where I was going. My feet just moved and I let them, from one block of the city. A bar, I thought vaguely. I needed a bar. I needed some alcohol that would sandpaper the inside of my chest until I stopped feeling quite so much. As I walked to the bar, a car came out of nowhere. There was a loud screech of tires, a blast of horn, stopping close enough that I felt the heat of the engine on my shins. My luggage burst open and my clothes laid on the road. I stumbled backward with a gasp on my lips, and every single thing I'd been holding in since I walked out of that house came roaring up my throat at once. "Are you insane?" I screamed at the windshield. "You could have killed me! What the hell is wrong with you, you absolute maniac. Watch where you're going next time!" The car had parked on the side of the road. Surging forward, I began to bang on the windows. "Get out of the car right now, let me see your face!" The door opened in obedience, and a man stepped out. The angry words died in my throat immediately as I took in those wide shoulders, and a coy amused smile. “You?”AURIELLE I showed the note to Dominic, after I already made up my mind. "What time do we leave?" Dominic asked. “I’m going alone,” I said firmly, standing in the living room with my arms crossed. “This is my fight too, Dominic. Victor wants to talk to me. If I take you with me, he will shut down and we will get nothing useful.” Dominic paced back and forth in front of me, his voice rising with every step. “Absolutely not. You are not meeting that man by yourself. He is dangerous, Aurielle. He already tried to break into the house once, he stole footages, what if he tries something worse this time?” I shook my head, refusing to back down. “I can handle Victor. I lived with him for four years. I know exactly how he thinks and how he operates. If you show up, he will use it as an excuse to play the victim and leak even more lies to the press. Let me do this my way.” He stopped pacing and faced me directly, his eyes intense. “Your way almost got you hit by my car that day, you kno
AURIELLE “Dominic,” I said, my voice quieter than I wanted, showing him the screen. “The leaked footage is everywhere. They twisted our conversations, It looks like we’re just actors reading lines for your inheritance.” "Damn it," He cursed under his breath, answering one of the calls with a clipped tone. “We will issue a statement soon.” He hung up and turned to me, his face tight. “My secretary just called." I rolled my eyes as I heard the person that was on the other end of the phone. "She said the board is in panic. They want us at an emergency press conference in two hours. We have no choice but to face this head on.” I nodded, even though my stomach twisted. The next two hours passed with rushed preparation. I changed into a simple but strong beige dress that made me feel armor-plated. Dominic stayed close, but the tension between us was heavy. AURIELLE Dominic caught her before her head hit the stone steps, sliding his arm under her shoulders and lowering her down. “Marcus!” His voice tore through the house. “Marcus, I need my keys now!” Marcus came running from the side hall, took one look at the woman in Dominic’s arms, and didn’t ask a single question. He just pulled his keys from his pocket and threw them across the foyer. “Aurielle, move,” Dominic said, already lifting her. I stepped back automatically, my mind still trying to catch up to what my eyes were seeing. “Dominic, who is…” “Please, not now.” He was out the door before I finished the sentence, the woman limp against his chest, her coat falling open to reveal how thin she was underneath it. I grabbed my own shoes from the hallway and ran after them anyway. Whatever was happening, I wasn’t being left behind in the house wondering. The car ride to the hospital felt like it stretched. Dominic sat in the back with her head in his lap, two fingers pressed aga
AURIELLE There was no news about my marriage with Dominic. I checked my phone three times before getting out of bed, half expecting him to still go along with it. Dominic found me in the kitchen an hour later, still in my robe, staring at the cup of coffee I hadn’t touched. “You didn’t sleep.” “I kept waiting for my phone to blow up, Victor said tomorrow morning. It’s tomorrow morning.” Dominic pulled out the chair across from me and sat down slowly. “Maybe he’s bluffing.” “Victor doesn’t bluff.” I wrapped both hands around the mug, needing something to hold onto. “If he hasn’t leaked it yet, it’s because he’s still deciding how to use it. That’s worse than him just doing it.” “What did he actually say to you yesterday? You never gave me the full conversation.” I’d been avoiding this. “He wants me to help him sabotage you. Feed him information. In exchange, he keeps quiet about the footage and whatever Tyler’s willing to say.” Dominic’s expression didn’t change, but his hand

AURIELLE I woke up in the massive bed. The guest room was bigger than my entire apartment had been. Neutral tones, abstract art on the walls, a bathroom I could get lost in. A soft knock pulled me out of my regret. “Breakfast is in twenty, Miss,” A female voice came through the door. I show
AURIELLE I stared at Dominic Frost like he’d just grown a second head. My heart was still hammering from everything I’d dumped on him, my failed marriage, my stolen company, the way my entire life had crumbled in the space of one morning. And now this man, this stranger, who drove a car that pro
AURIELLE Of all the people, of all the streets, of all the cars in this entire city, it had to be this one? Like a total idiot, I gawked at the person standing in front of me, the guy from the website. My face was so hot that I was surprised it didn't set off a fire alarm. "I'm not dealing
