Chapter 4

Auteur: Cabbage
Up on the stage, Brandon didn't dare look me in the eye. A flash of guilt crossed his face. He turned his head away and said coldly, "I don't know you. Someone like me would never have a mom who works as a cleaner. Both my mom and dad are already here.

"Security, get her out of here right now. People like her have no class. She's just here for free food."

Brandon's words shattered my heart. I turned around to look for Jeremy, but he had his arm wrapped intimately around Emma.

Jeremy met my gaze, frowned, and gave me a warning look. Before I could say a word, he beat me to it and said loudly, "What? Are you trying to claim a connection with me again and say you're my wife?"

He sneered. "Look at yourself. You're just a plain, washed-up woman. And you still think you can seduce me? My gorgeous wife is right here by my side. Look at you. You can't even compare to a single strand of her hair.

"Get out of here right now. Stop embarrassing yourself. If you want a free meal, we'll give you some leftovers meant for the dogs after we're done eating."

Emma had clearly recognized me. She looked down at me, sizing me up critically, her eyes gleaming with triumph. She was dressed in luxury brands from head to toe and didn't even bother to speak to me.

She was now a successful entrepreneur back from abroad, looking barely 38 years old thanks to how well she had taken care of herself and how elegantly she dressed.

Meanwhile, I had spent my entire life working ordinary jobs and had washed dishes at this hotel for more than two years. The hardship had aged me so much that we looked as if we belonged to two entirely different generations.

Seeing that I still refused to leave, one of Brandon's close friends couldn't hold back and stood up. He reached out, grabbed a piece of bread off the table, and hurled it at me.

He said, "Why haven't you gotten lost yet? You're this old and still have no manners. You just came to swindle a free meal, didn't you? Are you really that desperate for a meal?

"I've seen plenty of people like you online, showing up out of nowhere for free food without even bringing a wedding gift. If you don't leave, we'll call the cops. Aren't you ashamed of embarrassing your family?"

My past job had been perfectly respectable. When I finally retired, all my coworkers sent me off with flowers, and I retired with dignity and pride. I had never been so disheveled and humiliated in my entire life.

The security guards didn't believe the ridiculous claim that I was the groom's biological mom. Fearing they would face complaints if this dragged on any longer, they stopped holding back.

They gripped my arms so hard that they ached. My hair came loose and fell into disarray. They forcefully dragged me toward the main exit.

I cried out, "No! I really am Brandon's biological mother! Jeremy, Brandon, the two of you are ungrateful and heartless—"

Some guests nearby even pulled out their phones and started live-streaming me. They seemed to think the shots weren't clear enough from a distance, so they shamelessly ran to within a few steps of me and shoved their cameras in my face.

"Everyone, take a look. I've really seen it all today. I actually ran into the kind of old woman who takes advantage of her age to deliberately ruin a wedding and get free food and drinks."

"Does anyone watching the live stream know this old woman? Hurry up and take her home so she stops making a fool of herself."

The two guards hauled me up and threw me out of the hotel in front of everyone watching.

The freezing wind and snow hit my body. Wearing only my thin work uniform, I shivered uncontrollably from the cold.

I had truly raised an ungrateful son. Not only did he refuse to acknowledge me as his mom, but he even called his dad's mistress "Mom" over and over again.

I closed my eyes for a moment, took out my phone, and called the hotel's general manager, Calvin Finch.

With red-rimmed eyes, I said in a hoarse voice, "Hello, Mr. Finch. Could you do me a favor? In a little while, please help me play some photos and videos on the big screen behind the couple."

Renee said, "Didn't you ask why I ended our partnership? It's because Ms. Harrell is my godmother. Now you know why, don't you? You upset my mom, so I'm not interested in working with you anymore."Her words instantly left all four of them staring at me in shock.Brandon had the strongest reaction. He rushed over and grabbed my hand, his eyes red. "Mom, how could you go this far? You actually held a grudge and deliberately drove Ms. Griffin's company into bankruptcy."Do you know if the company goes bankrupt, even if we sell everything we own, we still won't be able to pay the penalty? Are you really going to stand by and watch Dad and me end up homeless?"He gripped my hand so hard that it started to hurt. Keeping a cold expression, I yanked my hand free without mercy and slapped him across the face. A sharp smack echoed through the air.I said, "Don't call me 'Mom.' From now on, we're strangers to each other. Whether you die or end up crippled, I won't even blink an eye."Renee

Without any hesitation, Renee called out clearly, "Mom."Her father had passed away when she was very young, and her mother had run away with another man, so she grew up living with her grandmother in the village. Her eyes turned red as she picked up the food she had bought and handed it to me. "Mom, in my heart, you've always been my real mom. I wouldn't be where I am today without your help."Afterward, we decided to stop supplying raw materials to Emma's company and end our partnership with it."Let's wait a little longer. We'll take action after Jeremy and I receive our divorce certificate in a month," I said.I knew Jeremy's true nature too well. If he lost everything now, he would definitely regret divorcing me.…Time passed slowly. Almost as soon as the month was up, Brandon called early in the morning to rush me. "Mom, I'm parked outside your building. Hurry down and go pick up the divorce certificate with Dad. Get there early so you can be first in line."The process

"That's right. There's not much time left. Ms. Griffin, this is your first wedding, so we can't let you settle for anything less. We have to prepare properly," Angela said.Emma looked self-conscious and gave Jeremy a playful glare. "We're not young anymore. We might even become grandparents soon. People will laugh if we still throw a wedding."Angela linked arms with Emma affectionately. "Ms. Griffin, you've waited for Dad for decades. This is your first wedding, so we can't cut corners. Leave all the planning to Brandon and me."Not wanting to keep watching this jarring scene of their happy family, I turned and walked away.Jeremy's voice came from behind me, "Nancy, I've already hired a moving company to help you pack your things and move out of the house shortly. Brandon is staying with me, and raising him costs plenty, so don't fight me over the house."I didn't slow my steps for even a moment and kept walking away. But halfway down the road, my vision suddenly went dark, and

In the end, I resigned from my job with Mr. Finch. I really couldn't keep doing that job anymore. My pension had always been enough for me to live comfortably for the rest of my life. If it hadn't been for Brandon, I never would have put myself through all of this. Now, I no longer needed to do it at all.Just as I finished packing my things and headed out, a man called out from behind me in an anxious voice, "Ms. Harrell, wait a second!"Ted Jones ran over, out of breath. Despite standing at nearly six feet tall, he looked embarrassed and awkward when he saw me.He scratched his head, then apologized to me solemnly, saying, "Ms. Harrell, I'm so sorry. I didn't know you were Brandon's real mom. I'm truly sorry for how rude I was to you. Brandon is an ungrateful jerk. I've already cut ties with him."I hadn't expected him to come and apologize to me. My broken heart finally felt a little warmth once more.I smiled at him. "It's okay. I don't blame you. Just don't be so impulsive n

Mr. Finch smiled warmly. "Mr. Harrell, your mom, Ms. Harrell, came to me just now and asked us to play these. We simply thought it would create a meaningful family moment at the wedding."Many couples show meaningful photos and videos during their weddings. We didn't do anything inappropriate."The guests immediately burst into an uproar after hearing his explanation."The woman on the marriage certificate looks younger, but isn't that the cleaner who was dragged out earlier? She really is the groom's biological mom.""Then, who's the woman on stage who claimed she was the groom's mom? Look at how close she is with the groom and his dad. They look like a real family. I can't believe she's the mistress.""I really didn't expect Brandon to be this kind of person. He actually called his dad's mistress his mom and even had security throw out his real mom. How could anyone do that?"The friend who had been the first to defend Brandon and throw bread at me earlier slammed his hand on t

"Don't worry. I won't put you in a difficult position. I'll send you a photo of my son's birth certificate in a moment. Today's groom really is my biological son," I said.I had worked as a cleaner at this hotel for more than two years. One time, Mr. Finch suddenly suffered a heart attack and collapsed. I found him in time, called emergency services, and performed first aid to save him. He had been grateful to me ever since. In the end, Mr. Finch agreed to help me out. I immediately sent him my marriage certificate, Brandon's birth certificate, and several family photos. After I left, the wedding carried on as if nothing had happened. At that moment, Brandon and Angela sat at the head table, taking champagne glasses from a staff member nearby to offer a toast to their parents.Angela raised her glass high, her eyes brimming with tears. "Dad, Mom, thank you for working so hard to raise Brandon all these years. You've both sacrificed so much, especially you, Mom. Thank you for rais
