Chapter 2

Author: Levi
I declined the call.

A second later, Mom texted.

[You graduate in one week. You said if you weren't married by then, you'd let me set you up.]

[Think it over. Then call me back.]

After I started college, Mom never got over the average school I'd ended up at.

She believed it happened because I hadn't followed her plan.

So, to stop me from ruining the rest of my life, she decided to arrange my marriage.

She'd brought it up a million times over the past four years.

And I'd said no every time.

But Joshua's parents didn't allow dating while he was in school.

So we hid everything from our families.

Our relationship.

Our apartment.

Of course, I never dared tell Mom I already had a boyfriend.

Or that we'd promised to get married after graduation.

I'd been so sure I would marry Joshua.

So when Mom said, "If you're still not married after graduation, you'll do what I say," I'd agreed like it was nothing.

Gwen had already slipped into the kitchen and taken her place beside Joshua.

She eyed the shrimp, made a face, and ducked behind him. "Those things are creepy."

Joshua laughed. "And yet you love eating them. I already borrowed against next month's allowance to buy these, so you'd better finish them."

Only then did he seem to remember I was there.

He glanced up and smiled. "Didn't you say you wanted shrimp the other day? This works for you too."

That's what he said.

But when we sat down to eat, he peeled shrimp one after another and dropped them onto Gwen's plate.

"Her hands are too important for painting," he explained. "She can't peel them without making a mess. It's easier if I do it."

He peeled a few for me too.

The smallest ones.

That night, Joshua gave his room to Gwen.

And squeezed into mine.

Even though we'd been living together, we'd rented a two-bedroom apartment.

Joshua was big on privacy.

He always said that no matter how close two people were, they still needed their own space.

His room was filled with paintings that meant a lot to him.

I'd been strictly off-limits for four years.

I hadn't stepped inside once.

Yet a classmate staying for one night was sleeping there.

Lying beside me, he wrapped an arm around my waist.

"When are we going to tell our families about us?" I asked.

"Later."

He pulled me closer and buried his face in my neck.

"We've got a few more days until graduation. We've already waited four years. What's a little longer?"

I thought about the note I'd seen that morning.

And realized he was dodging the question.

My throat tightened.

In the end, I couldn't say a word.

The next morning, I woke to something clattering in the kitchen.

Joshua was still asleep.

I stepped out and found Gwen pacing around in there.

She was wearing the pajama set that matched mine.

When she saw me, she froze.

"You two are so cute, buying matching pajamas. I didn't bring clothes, and I couldn't exactly sleep naked. You're way smaller than me, so yours wouldn't fit. I just borrowed one of Joshua's sets. Don't be jealous."

She was right.

I was way smaller than her.

A car accident when I was little had left me weak.

No matter how well I ate after that, I never got strong.

I was barely five-three.

Gwen, though, had the kind of figure people noticed. And she was at least half a head taller than me.

As she talked, she filled a bowl with cream soup and handed it over.

"I didn't want to crash here for free, so I made breakfast. Try it."

Before I could answer, she shoved the bowl into my hands.

I reached out on instinct.

The bowl hit the floor and shattered.

Then came a sharp cry.

Joshua rushed out of the bedroom.

Straight to Gwen.

A few red spots dotted the back of her hand where the soup had splashed.

His face went tight with panic.

"How could you be so careless? Don't you know how important your hands are?"

He grabbed her wrist and headed for the door.

Before leaving, he threw one line back at me.

"I'm taking her to the hospital to get that burn treated."

He saw the few red marks on her hand.

But not the scalding soup covering mine.

As a med student, my hands were everything.

I walked to the sink, turned on the faucet, and shoved my hand under the cold water.

Pain ripped through me.

Like my skin was being stripped away.

But it cleared my head.

Completely.

Ignoring the burn, I called my mom.

"That guy you wanted me to marry...

"Set it up."

Joshua didn't seem to be home.Michael and Melinda quickly welcomed us in.Melinda grabbed my mom's hand, both of them smiling their way through small talk.I didn't know if my mom knew what Melinda really thought.I just knew watching them perform was exhausting.Gwen greeted me first."It's been six months. You've changed a lot."She wasn't wrong. My hair was longer now.Money really did change things.I'd only lived with Cole for six months, but I was finally getting the care I needed.I'd filled out.I looked healthier.I smiled politely. "You've changed too."The bright, confident woman I remembered was gone. Her golden curls were gone, replaced by short black hair.Six months pregnant, she barely looked like the dazzling woman I'd first met.Joshua didn't come downstairs until dinner. He looked surprised to see me.He froze on the stairs.Gwen walked over, took his hand, and led him to the table. He pulled away and sat right across from me.During dinner, he

The smell of Gwen's perfume was gone.Instead, he smelled like the body wash I always used. The scent I used to love most. For four years, I'd fallen asleep beside that scent, dreaming about our future. Not anymore.I was finally awake. "Joshua, I thought you'd have at least a little dignity."He bit his lip and tightened his arms around me, his voice rough. "But none of that has happened yet. Everything can still change."I don't want to be apart from you. Not now. Not ever. I'll never leave you."Before he could say another word, Cole grabbed his wrist.Joshua was no match for him.Cole pulled him away from me."Stop harassing her." Each word landed hard. "She's not part of your future."The boarding announcement echoed through the terminal.Cole took my hand and led me toward the gate.Maybe Cole's words finally got through to him.Or maybe it was because I never looked back.Either way, Joshua stayed where he was.And this time, he didn't follow.***After moving

Cole wrapped an arm around my shoulders and eased me away from Joshua.Melinda clicked her tongue. "Joshua, how old are you? Still this reckless? Dinner's over, and you're only just getting back. Where were you?"But Joshua kept staring at me.Then at Cole's arm around me."Let go." He was still catching his breath. "I said let go. She's my girlfriend."Melinda's smile froze.I slid my arm through Cole's. "This is my husband, Cole."Joshua's eyes burned, full of anger. "I know you're mad at me."I messed up. I shouldn't have brought Gwen back to our place, and I shouldn't have..."He stopped."Whatever. Be mad if you want, but you can't just marry some random guy."I wanted to tell him Cole wasn't random. But I didn't feel like explaining.I turned to Melinda, who looked painfully awkward, and smiled."We should go. We'll visit again sometime."Then I got in the car and left.Joshua tried to stop us, but Melinda grabbed his shirt. In the rearview mirror, I couldn't hea

It felt like someone had ripped something out of Joshua's chest. He kept zooming in on the photo.Again and again.Looking for proof it was fake.Looking for signs it had been edited. But the official seal on the marriage license told him otherwise. It was real.On the day she'd promised to marry him, Nellie got a marriage license with someone else.[Why?]He sent the message.[Because of a note written six years in the future?][Four years ago, I promised I'd marry you.][How can you just throw that away?]The messages vanished into silence. No reply came.Refusing to accept it, Joshua pulled up the photo of the ring he'd picked out ages ago and sent it to her.[I've already picked the ring. I've been waiting for this day. What gives you the right to just leave?]Even the ring got him nothing. Not until that afternoon, when his phone rang. His mom."Joshua, why haven't you come home after graduation? Get back here. And bring your girlfriend—the blonde one."Annoya

  • Notes from a Broken Future   Chapter 6

He remembered the first note. He'd written it seriously four years ago. After graduation, he would marry Nellie. That had been his biggest wish. But the second note was soaked in regret. It said if he could do it over, he never would've lived with her before marriage. The third was worse. It said he wanted a divorce. It even called Gwen his true love. Those two notes were dated six years in the future.Ridiculous.Joshua almost laughed. No—this was completely insane. He snapped a picture and sent it to Nellie.[This joke isn't funny. Don't you think it's ridiculous?]Still nothing.Joshua was done with the silent treatment. He crossed the street and headed for Nellie's medical school. The graduation party was still going. He found her class and looked everywhere. No Nellie.Panic started creeping in.He stopped a girl who looked familiar. "Excuse me. You're Nellie's friend, right?"The girl looked at him like he'd lost it. "I am. Who are you?"Joshua let out a b

[Who's pretending?]The message went through.Nothing came back.Joshua's mood tanked. 'Nellie's being ridiculous.'He opened her post again and zoomed in.Nellie held a mixed bouquet of roses, her head tipped toward the guy beside her.Almost like she was leaning on his shoulder. The guy looked older.Maybe twenty-five or twenty-six.Nellie didn't even like older guys. She liked him. Someone only a few months older. And she hated roses. Her favorite flowers were hyacinths. So yeah. This guy was obviously some random she'd picked to make him jealous.Feeling better, Joshua sent another message.[You have ten minutes. Delete it.]Then he went to his own profile and deleted the graduation photo he'd just posted. He deleted the Mona Lisa post too. After taking screenshots, he sent them to Nellie.[Fair is fair. I deleted mine too.]Still nothing. He kept checking her profile. Her post was still there.Bold. Blinding. An eyesore. He was about to call her when someone
