Chapter 208

Author: Lean
Even before the divorce, their marriage had never been normal. He had never once admitted his relationship with Penelope to her.

Caleb knew all too well how much it had hurt. He tried to explain. "I've really cut ties with Penelope. There won't be any more contact. I promise you that."

Unfortunately, Sydney no longer cared. It made no difference whether they lived out their days together or severed ties completely. The divorce was already a certainty.

She lowered her eyes, silent for a moment

  • Once a Doormat, Now Untouchable   Chapter 749

Early the next day, Diana had just arrived at the office when she received a call from Joseph."Diana, are you free this weekend? Clara would like to take you to dinner." Joseph's tone was gentle, with a trace of caution."If there's something you need, just say it," Diana said."It's still about you and Leon. He hasn't had much of an appetite these past few days. You know Clara watched him grow up, so naturally it pains her to see him like this." Joseph broached the subject carefully. "So... Clara would like to have you over for a meal, just to see if there's still any chance to work things out.""There's no chance left for him and me." Diana's tone remained calm. "The divorce agreement has already been filed. Once the cooling-off period ends, we'll get the certificate.""I know, I know." Joseph hurriedly added, "It's just a meal, nothing more. Clara also wants to apologize to you. What happened with Helen before was our family's failure to handle things properly."With the matt

Diana paused for only a second before looking away.Leon hurried after her and called out, "Diana.""Do you need something?" Diana didn;t slow down."I heard you were coming to the convention center, so I wanted to talk to you in person." Leon fell into step beside her, his voice low."There's nothing left for us to talk about." Diana walked to a relatively quiet corner before stopping and turning to face him. "We've already signed the divorce agreement. Once the waiting period is over, we'll get the certificate. Just let the process run its course."Leon swallowed. "Diana, do we really have to be like this?""Like what?" Diana asked."Like strangers." His voice grew slightly hoarse. "Even if we're getting divorced, we grew up together. We shouldn't be at the point where we can't even have a proper conversation."Diana frowned faintly. "What is it you want to say?""What I want to say is..." Leon seemed to choose his words carefully. "I didn't handle the situation with Helen w

Diana had been busy at the office all day.Just before quitting time, Nina pushed the door open and walked in."Ms. Hutton, are you still going to tonight's economic forum?" Holding a stack of documents against her chest, she added, "It's raining hard right now. The roads might be difficult.""I'm going." Diana set down her pen. "The organizers have everything arranged. It wouldn't be appropriate to cancel at the last minute."Nina nodded and held out the documents. "This is the forum's attendee list. Take a look first."Diana accepted the documents and flipped through them. Her gaze stopped partway down the list: Jillson Group Executive Vice President, Hugo Kingston."Let me know when the car is ready.""Yes."Diana set the documents aside and picked up her pen to continue reviewing paperwork. Then her pen paused.Without warning, the memory of Hugo's last visit to Seraph Villa for dinner surfaced in her mind.He had been wearing that dark blue coat, his posture straight an

In Seraph Villa, Diana had just stepped out of the shower, her hair still damp, when her phone suddenly buzzed.Hugo had sent a photo of Norchester's night skyline. Skyscrapers rose in dense rows, their lights glittering against the darkness.Hugo: [Hey, the night view here in Norchester isn't as nice as Brimcrest's.]A smile tugged at her lips. Holding the phone in one hand, she typed back: [Then why are you still there?]His reply arrived seconds later.Hugo: [I'll just have to wait for Grandpa to let me go.]She paused before typing: [Then spend more time with him while you're there. Stop thinking about coming back so much.]Hugo: [Don't want me to come back?]Diana stared at the message. Something about it felt off, though she couldn't quite put her finger on it. In the end, she replied with only two words.Diana: [Suit yourself.]After sending the message, she set the phone on the nightstand, dried her hair, and lay down.As soon as she closed her eyes, the image of Leo

Tiffany had neither refused nor agreed.Sydney understood and did not press the issue. Instead, she said, "Ray has changed a lot lately. The last time he came to Delta Mansion, even Grandma said he seemed steadier than before."Tiffany didn't respond, but the corner of her mouth twitched slightly. Sydney noticed, though she chose not to call attention to it.The two sat together a while longer. Then Tiffany checked the time. "If your man finds out I kept you out late, he won't let me see you next time. Let's go.""He wouldn't." Sydney stood with a laugh and picked up an armful of shopping bags.Tiffany immediately took more than half of them. "Give those to me. You're a top-priority case these days."The two walked side by side toward the parking lot. As they passed a baby goods store, Tiffany suddenly stopped."What's wrong?"Sydney followed her gaze. In the display window sat a set of crib bedding, complete with a pale pink blanket embroidered with moons and stars."Nothing.

By the time Sydney arrived at the mall, Tiffany was already waiting outside the coffee shop. She wore an oatmeal-colored coat over a black turtleneck sweater, with her hair falling loosely over her shoulders. She looked less polished than usual, more relaxed.Even so, Sydney noticed the faint shadows beneath her eyes at a glance.Sydney walked over and linked arms with her in an easy, familiar gesture. "How long have you been waiting?""Just got here." Tiffany handed her the hot latte she was holding. "I got this for you. It's still hot."Sydney took it and sipped. The warm, slightly bitter drink slid down her throat, and she felt herself warm up a little.Tilting her head, she studied Tiffany. "So, what's going on?"Tiffany did not answer. She slipped her arm through Sydney's and headed into the mall. "Let's look around first. It's been ages since we went shopping together."The two of them browsed from the first floor to the third. Tiffany tried on a few outfits but bought onl

There were many out-of-towners in Jouleston, but the roads lay nearly empty and the traffic was sparse at this hour. Still, the car's route gradually felt wrong. They were heading toward Viridian Garden.Sydney glanced at the driver. "Jack, just take me back to Aurum Road.""Ms. Wilson…" Jack hesi

Julian had not expected Sydney to be so blunt. His brows lifted slightly, but before he could speak, her phone rang. It lay on the bed between them. Both glanced at the caller ID.It was Tiffany. At such a late hour, she would not be calling without reason.Sydney snatched up the phone. "Hello? T

At her words, Caleb's expression faltered. "What did you say? You know where she is?""How could I?" Penelope replied flatly. "That drug lord hasn't even been released from prison yet. How could she not be living well?"Suspicion flickered in Caleb's eyes as he stared at her. "You'd better hope sh

Penelope grabbed Sydney's arm. "You're not allowed to leave! Call Caleb right now! Tell him you cheated, that you're divorcing him!"Sydney was utterly speechless.
